We use rulers often around Ferrum Forge Knife Works, just little things like making a straight line or having a rough measurement.
Since they tend to sit by our screwdrivers, which have magnetic tips, steel rulers get a little magnetized and collect metal flakes and dust so we always have to wipe them off and every now and then we spill acids on them and they get stains that obscure the rules. One day while doing a layout on one of our Maker's Choice knives (they are fancy upgrades of whatever model we are building)
I had to clean off my steel ruler multiple times and I couldn't read some of the 1/16in marks because of some acid stains. I actually said aloud, "man i wish these things were made of titanium." Then a lightbulb, a dim one, but lightbulb nonetheless, went on... I could just make one. We use titanium in our knives and we have a great laser shop down the road that marks our blades and cuts our pocket clips. I generated the ruler in CAD and brought some .02in thick 6Al 4V Titanium to our laser shop, they cut the blank, we took it back to our shop for deburring and finishing, then brought it back to laser for the rule marks to be lasered on.
The original Ti ruler was sitting on my bench when the head machinist at a local machine shop stopped by for visit. He loved it and said we should make more. When I posted a photo of my original Ti ruler on Instagram other knife makers asked me to make them one. So we are making more and we think other crafty people out in the world might like one too. The scales are inches down to 1/32nds and metric by mm.
And we have Fundage!
Since we are funded we are going to open up Green as a color option. It will be on the survey as a choice once the project time is up.
Risiken und Herausforderungen
Realistically the only risk is delay. We have more than enough Titanium sitting around the shop to mess up several 200 pieces runs and still have enough to fulfill this project's rewards, it would just push the delivery date back a month. We spent considerable time fine tuning the laser markings and process so there would be no guess work. We run a successful knife making company so we don't leave process engineering to chance.
While this is our first venture into Kickstarter, we run the vast majority of our knife sales online through our website ferrumforge.com and Instagram (ferrumforgekw) so manufacturing, order processing, and large volume shipping are all in our wheelhouse. We deliberately chose this project to be our foray into Kickstarter because it has the least amount of risk.
