Hello There! My name is Jean-Paul, and I want to bring people a game for the very depths of my heart!
For the past few years, I've run a "choose your own adventure" story about a pudgy little man who is stranded in the desert. It started out as something just silly that I did in my free time, but it has grown into something so much bigger since then. Slowly but surely, I've been building up a larger and grander story behind the wacky hijinks of this bleached white character who enjoys talking to stalagmites.
Until recently, I've been content to slowly chip away at this game on my days off work, with a "It will be done when it's done" attitude, but recently, much like the story of sandquest itself, life had bigger plans for me.
I recently proposed to my soon to be wife. This is the event that showed me I've got to get my butt in gear, make this game, and make sure it's something that the world hasn't seen before.
Let's move on and talk about the game itself. That's what you guys are here for anyway. Sandquest is for all you people who just want to play a good old fashioned old-school RPG that isn't medieval themed, and doesn't have a feminine, whiny male as the main character. Needless to say, games of this type are extremely few and far between. The basic plot of the game is this: You're a regular guy who crashed his car in in the desert after a sneezing fit. Now you're trapped in this gigantic wasteland with no resources. As you search for a way out of your predicament you'll make some unusual friends such as stalagmites, cacti, and tumbleweeds. Basically if you can fit a face on its sprite, it will join your party. Throughout your game you'll also come upon lot's of edible items. You are what you eat! Every edible item will change your appearance in some way, and give you a brand new attack. The art style is a callback to the original CYOA I did with it's mspaint style. Behind the viel of eating things you find off the ground, and befriending oil drums, there's a rich history to the wasteland you're trapped in. You may find out that your destiny is something higher than you could possibly perceive. Or you might spend all your time making love to a cactus. Who knows. The basic point I'm trying to convey here is that this is going to be unlike any game you ever played, but it's still going to be a simple enough battle system and game mechanics that anyone can pick up and play.
That's what brings me here to Kickstarter. As I said before, Sandquest started out as a choose your own adventure, where users would vote on what to do next, and ultimately decided the fate and outcome of the character. I still want this game to be like that. Thats why a lot of the rewards have to do with characters and dialogue in the game! But this is not just an opprotunity for the rich. I'll be constantly updating my progress on this game, and listening to what you suggest and think so far. If you think the character should be able to eat that nearby rock and grow a rock beard, there's a good chance I'll make that an option in the game! If you like the shrub in the distance, and this it should be a character who chain smokes and calls people "sweetheart", well maybe it will be! I want this to incorporate the ideas of everyone, and be a real community project! This isn't just about funding, it's also about taking part in the game itself!

Your donations are not only allowing me to work on this round the clock, but also pay some of the talented musicians and artists who are making sandquest possible. It will also allow me to work on a computer that doesn't shut off at completely random intervals. Other expenses are for things like the physical copy of the game getting printed, and basic advertising once the game comes out.
