Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company presents genuinely unique, insightful and authentically innovative productions of Shakespeare. We celebrate our 20th Anniversary season with a bold, new investigation of the English-language theatre’s greatest tragic figure ... Hamlet.
LAWSC Founder and Artistic Director Lisa Wolpe will take on the title role of Hamlet. Obie-Award winning actress Charlayne Woodard as Gertrude leads a highly accomplished classical cast of twelve women in a spare, elegant, contemporary production.
In a paradigm-shifting move LAWSC invites the collaboration of its first male director, a wonderful artist who has directed extensively both nationally and internationally. Timothy Douglas (off-B’way’s Bronte: A Portrait Of Charlotte and the world premiere of August Wilson’s RADIO GOLF) leads the company’s dynamic exploration of Hamlet’s ruminations on love, life, revenge and mortality.
Hamlet, as revealed through women’s voices, continues the LAWSC tradition of upending our expectations of Shakespeare’s familiar subtexts by pricking our ears to listen anew to his masterful characters and plotting. The production will be further inspired by its contemporary Los Angeles setting, evoking a politically dynamic, sexually provocative, and culturally divergent frame for the drama to unfold.

About Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company:
We are the Gender-Benders, Shakespearean Drag Kings, Expert Players with an eye on the Divine. You probably know that Shakespeare¹s original troupe of players was all-male. Men played all the female roles, enjoying a
fascinating exploration of gender which was purposefully built into all of
the plays. Women were not allowed to play on stage during this time in history. Thanks to hundreds of years of impassioned activism, women are now allowed to participate in the artistic and political process. We are delightedly and expertly engaging in the opportunity to share the full range of our intellectual and emotional capabilities.
We very much look forward to celebrating our twentieth anniversary with you with this production! Thank you in advance for your support!
