About this project
nOb is a very precise, generic, endless knob controller. It was designed with the author in mind, who wants to adjust any type of parameter during demanding media production.
By intelligently emulating a Human Interface Device (NOT simply implementing a mouse scroll wheel), nOb is able to control virtually any parameter you would normally adjust with your mouse, delivering out-of-the-box compatibility with any operating system and software package.
You simply have to point your mouse cursor to the parameter you want to control and use nOb's big knob to fine-tune it to taste. Based on the current mode of operation, any draggable interface element found in modern media production software can be controlled, including sliders, scrollbars, knobs or even draggable value indicators.
This mode is used for elements that stay in the same position when controlled, like e.g. knobs or pitch wheels.
This mode is used for draggable elements, like e.g. sliders, scrollbars or faders.
This mode is used for elements that can be adjusted when dragged vertically.
This mode is used for elements that can be adjusted along the horizontal axis.
No matter if you are a colorist, music producer, sound designer, video editor or 3D artist, there is certainly a place for nOb in your workflow, to revolutionize the way you make adjustments!
nOb features a big, solid, aluminium knob with adjustable rotation resistance and a very precise industrial grade encoder with up to 2400 ticks / revolution.
All the electronics are housed inside a durable, hand crafted, hardwood mahogany enclosure. For those of you, who seek to make their own customizations, this can also be done :)
Its knob and toggle switches are touch sensitive allowing for some really neat productivity features, like e.g. double tapping the big knob to undo the last adjustment, touching the right toggle switch to temporarily flip the operation mode and many more!
It can deliver precise real-time data, like e.g. rotation or touch events , through an open serial protocol interface (serial over USB), to allow developers to use it as they please.
With up to 2400 counts per rotation, nOb delivers precise adjustment even in the most demanding fine-tuning situations.
No matter what type of screen element you want to adjust, there is certainly a way to do it with nOb.
By emulating a Human Interface Device, nOb works with any computer system that can host a USB keyboard or mouse.
By using nOb's open serial interface, developers may write software to customize its functionality and extend its features.
All hardware parts can be unscrewed and taken apart, allowing for hacks and other modifications.
It does not only look vintage, it feels that way. Smoothness and responsiveness are part of that feel.

Nowadays, many of us tend to create in more than one programs.
One might seek to create a video, some graphics, a music track or even an animation and combine all these together into a single piece of work.

Precision comparison: MIDI vs nOb
Here at NOB CONTROL, we are working to deliver the best single knob controller experience out there. Part of our plan is to release our own lightweight one-stop application, which will enable users of all platforms to create custom assignments for their nOb controllers with ease and flexibility.
In order to make this happen, we have to invest time in software development and testing. As a result, the more support we get, the sooner we will be able to deliver nAc (nOb Assignment center). With your help, our target release date will be shortly after shipment of the last campaign order.
Stretch goal #1 @ €75.000 (basic)
nAc v1.0 release for Windows/MacOs/Linux
- Create assignments to control static user interfaces in any available nOb controlling mode.
- Custom keyboard shortcuts for activating assignments.
- Switch automatically between different assignments based on the current window in focus.
- No need to lift your fingers off the big knob. Control modes are changed internally without having to use the toggle switches.
- No installation needed. Keep it in a USB-Stick if you want, and take your assignments with you.
- Simple access through nAc’s tray icon to create, edit or delete assignments.
Stretch goal #2 @ €85.000 (advanced connectivity)
All of the above features, plus
- Activate assignments over MIDI or custom Open Sound Control (OSC) signals
- Create assignments that send MIDI CC over any available MIDI device or custom OSC signals over the network with custom mapping curves!
- Individually set precision/speed for each assignment
- Create assignments to control basic global OS parameters (volume, screen brightness, etc)
Stretch goal #3 @ €100.000 (ultimate experience)
All of the above features, plus
- Use of image recognition technology to create assignments for dynamic user interfaces (e.g. being able to control on-screen elements, that can be rearranged inside their windows)
- Create global assignments: when activated, the corresponding program automatically comes in focus and the right parameter can be controlled.
- Eye tracking ready: Built-in support for the Tobii EyeX.
We firmly believe that is possible to efficiently control any software parameter using nOb together with nAc. We would love to bring this possibility out to you as soon as possible and help you create assignment configurations and share them with other users. We are open to any suggestions and looking forward to develop nAc into nOb’s best companion!

Risks and challenges
nOb is a working, thoroughly tested device and not just a design concept. As a result, there are no direct risks associated with researching or developing it.
However, as with any other hardware production operation, problems may occur, like e.g. delayed orders or technical difficulties. In that case, we will do anything in our power to ensure a smooth delivery of our products.
