About

Three of my family were stabbed and bludgeoned to death--my sister-in-law, who was also raped, and my two teenage nephews. The killer was the 19-year-old young man across the street, who had been in the top two percent of his high school graduating class and was headed to university as an engineering major. He dropped out of high school two weeks before graduation and began prowling the neighborhood at night. He admitted to the crime and was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison with no parole.

Six months after the murders, I found Zen. This is the story of my life and of how, after five years of daily meditation and mindfulness practice with the teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, I came to forgive him. But I never got to tell him so: he hung himself to death in his cell. Then, after being ordained by Thich Nhat Hanh, through an amazing set of coincidences, I started teaching mindfulness in a men's medium security prison, where some of the men actually knew the murderer.

Five excerpts from my book-in-progress have been published, including in the most recent issue of Buddhadharma, as well as in Best Buddhist Writing 2006. (Go to  http://www.amazon.com/Best-Buddhist-Writing-2006/dp/1590304004#reader_1590304004 and key in Murder as a Call to Love.) Also look online at Not in Our Name, http://www.mvfr.org/wp-content/uploads/nion-nc-2007 and my personal essay from the book in Right View Magazine, http://www.rightviewonline.org/RVO_Pages/Pages_Essays/essays.html.

See the Cloud Cottage Community of Mindful Living at www.cloudcottage.org, where I have been blogging about all of this. With my husband Philip Toy, I have taught Zen in NC, SC, AZ, FL, NJ, PA, Ireland and Scotland. People are waiting for this book. Wherever I go, always tell my story.

My book is written. I simply need to get it into shape for publication, and my husband and I are looking for funds to publish it under our own imprint, Cloud Cottage Editions, with which we have already published Great Doubt, the spirit of self inquiry by Roger Hawkins, which you can find on Amazon.
