Elf is a fantasy web comic that I started in 2012 as a fun project that I could develop little by little, uploading just one page a week.
It began as a series of short vignettes centered around an archetypical Tolkienesque elf character and her talking wombat sidekick, Clarence. A rather strange fellow named Pieter would soon join them.
Clarence is no ordinary wombat. He's really of a subspecies I like to call... the Greater Wombat!
The initial strips were conceived with very little planning. I wanted to poke fun at and pay homage to the high fantasy genre as represented in countless books, films, video games, and my own experiences playing table top RPGs in the days of my youth.
Elf is often loose and experimental in structure. And it's evolving to contain longer and longer story arcs as the world inhabited by the central characters start to slowly open up.
In a nutshell, Elf is a story about a warrior called Blackfeather, who just wants to hang out with her pals, help others, and have adventures. This simple goal comes with many obstacles as deadly perils as well as the elf's own past crash into her path.
Part of the challenge of crafting this comic was balancing the immediate payoff of the one page gag with propelling the story & character development forward. Elf often digresses from the main narrative and becomes quite silly.
My goal is to tell a story that is true to its classic high fantasy roots while it explores mature and unorthodox themes. Elf is at once comedic and tragic. Ultimately, I want these stories to make a strong statement about the importance of imagination, friendship, courage, and decency.
Elf Book One will collect all of the comic pages from the web series and the rest of the current chapter, or story arc. Backers will be able to read the entire story to its end, even before it becomes available online.
In addition to 170 comic pages, the book will feature roughly 50 pages of pin-up and concept art galleries, including some that are entirely new or never before published.
And there are more great incentive for readers of the web series to pick up the book:
Extended fight sequences. Action sequences that span many pages are not ideal for a page a week web comic but not so for a book.
New and exclusive short chapter that will take you back to the events that led to the elf's first encounter with Clarence, the wombat!
The printed book will be produced with the highest possible quality in mind. Though most of the pages will be black & white with gray tones, the entire book will be printed using the 4-color process. It will be a thing of beauty! :D
Recommended for mature readers.
You could also request that nothing is printed on the back of the shirt of your choice. For those who don't like text on their T-shirts. ;)
FREE Bonus Comic: Blanche the Baby Killer #0
To sweeten the deal further... every pledge reward (excluding the $1 pledge) will include a free hard copy of my Xeric Grant Award winning 72 page graphic novel, Blanche the Baby Killer #0 for the first 1000 backers!
It's a story about a young factory worker who lives in a bizarre and nightmarish dystopian world.
Battered and marginalized by the brutal system she lives under, Blanche takes a drastic course to change her life. A course that will pit her against a horrifying and powerful demonic baby!
Recommended for mature readers.

Elf Book One just got a little bigger!
Many of my readers have often remarked that they really enjoy seeing the rough pencil sketches and other fun digressions. The art gallery sections have now been increased by at least 20 pages for a total page count of 220+ pages!

Elf on Comic Fury (comic plus lots of extra art in between)
Elf on Tapastic (mostly just the comic)
Crap. How am I going to fit this one in the book???
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter project so I'm heading into some uncharted territory here. I'm sure this will be a learning experience. The comic is mostly finished and the book and T-shirt printers have been contacted and are ready for action.
I'm a fairly well organized person with years of experience in meeting production deadlines, self publishing and shipping products. So, basically... with your support, I foresee smooth sailing ahead!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
