The universe was created in three parts: Spirit, Substance, and Soul. But, the purity of creation was corrupted by fallen Spiritual beings that coveted the Substance they had been denied and the Soul which they believed would grant them ultimate power...
Desire sparked a conflict which shattered the very fabric of creation. From the fragments of the Realms of Origin, a new Realm was created; one as much at war with itself as it was a mirror for the eternal conflict that caused it to begin.
It was here, the exiled Third Creation, creatures of Soul known as Elves and Men, and all those like them came to reside. Great civilizations rose and fell as war and peace danced throughout the land. So long as the Soul exists, it will be forever marked by strife. For it is the prize in the brutal and incessant war between Heaven and Hell.
However distant and far off that conflict may be, you remain caught up in the middle. You have no option but to live out your own life; hero or villain, champion or scoundrel, Ally of Angels or Thrall of the Enemy - it is your adventure.
This is the Realm of Strife.
Fantasy themed tabletop role playing games are nothing new; in fact, some would even say they are so old that they may no longer be relevant in our digital age. We, along with millions of others who adore this form of social gaming and collective storytelling, would strongly disagree.
Rather than attempting to reinvent this time honored tradition, Realm of Strife seeks to enrich it. Our approach is to take the classic elements that we know and love about... and build upon them; while focusing on further developing the facets we love most about this genre.
Some of the key features that we feel set Realm of Strife apart are:
- Dynamic Class System
- Limitless Character Customization
- Strategic Combat
- Community Based World Building
- Free to Play
Dynamic Class System
We believe that a class system is an integral part of a great RPG. We aren't looking to simply clone any other fantasy RPG.
Our aim is to create a dynamic class system that provides players with meaningful choices during character creation. This, in turn, opens up game play mechanics that make characters feel unique when roleplaying their way through the storyline and fighting it out on the battlefield.
Each of these class mechanics can be used on its own, or in combination with any other class mechanic, to make not just a split-class or multi-class, but an entirely new class (28 in total).
Limitless Character Customization
Going back through the years we find it's the characters we remember most. So we decided that providing a considerable amount of character customization options was our priority.
The standard race and class selection is certainly a big part of what personalizes a character however that's really only scratching the surface. We wanted more.
Here are just a few of the ways that you can customize your character to play exactly the way you want:
- 188 lore-authorized race and class combinations
- 67 Secondary Skills (with more coming), ranging from those aimed at improving your prowess on the battlefield, to occupations that can generate additional wealth, to skills that even grant the ability to create minions to do your every bidding
- A variety of class specializations such as Telekinesis, Hemomancy, Traps and Dirty Fighting (to name just a few) to further focus and improve your favorite class in a specific skill set
- Nine Schools of Spirit Powers (aka Magic)
- Four major Faith Paths with many regional specific offshoots available (see Systems of Faith: Gant and Norlanin for details)
- 250+ weapons to choose from, each with its own set of bonus effects such as parries, crushing blows, ward-offs, and many others
- 120+ pieces of armor that can be customized to fit the look of your character
- 200+ prefixes and/or suffixes that can be attached to each piece of equipment using the Enchanting and Crafting system.
We lost count at 287 million known core builds, so we're quite comfortable with claiming that our character customization is effectively limitless.
Conflict and strife are at the heart of the game world we are creating and they are the key to rule-set which accompanies it. While tabletop fantasy RPGs are built around storytelling and roleplaying, they wouldn't be what they are without dice based combat.
The newest trend seems to be that combat should be as quick and simplified as possible; perhaps because designers are attempting to cater to a player base that has become enamored with the fast pace of video games. That is not the game we set out to create...
Realm of Strife seeks to enrich your combat experience by taking a strategic approach that sometimes feels reminiscent of a tabletop skirmish game, while pairing it with the depth of an RPG.
We are completely unashamed to say that combat in Realm of Strife is complex and involved, requiring strategic decision making and team work in order to be victorious.
Manipulation of the turn order and the synergy of pairing instantaneous and action based abilities into potent combinations are key to your success. You will rely heavily on the individual strengths of your party members and discover creative ways to protect their weaknesses.
Alone you will falter, but together you will achieve greatness...
Community Based World Building
Technically, and purposely, Realm of Strife has been designed to allow you to create your own game worlds. After all, when the Realms of Origin were shattered and the fragments brought together to form the Realm of Strife, who can really say exactly how many Realms were truly created.
That said, a great deal of creative world building effort has already gone into the "official" RoS game world, much of it contributed by our community of play testers over the years.
The Realm of Strife World Building process thus far:
- Two pre-built continents; called Norlanin and Gant, with ample space to roam (and more coming)
- Numerous cultures, political entities and factions, such as the mysterious Emladrian Collective, the benevolent Republic of Gant, and the mighty Dominion of Minocea
- Over 100,000 words worth of history and back ground information
- Many ongoing conflicts that can provide a rich backdrop as you create your own epic adventure
- The exclusive opportunity to be directly involved in the World Building process through this Kickstarter project, helping to shape the Realm of Strife forever (see the Backer Rewards section for details)
Free to Play
Realm of Strife is available and free to anyone with an internet connection. Everything you need to play is already waiting for you on our website. Regardless of whether or not you back this project you could go play it right now.
Wait... are you crazy? How can you expect anyone to back your project?
Maybe we are crazy, but here is what we know. At this very moment you could probably find any RPG rule book or supplement that you can think of floating around somewhere on the internet. While we don't think it's cool to steal intellectual property, we recognize that it happens. Rather than fight that losing battle, we are just offering it for free.
We believe that people will enjoy the free, unpolished version of our game so much that they will inevitably decide they want to see it shine. Not only that, we think tabletop gamers are a creative bunch, who would absolutely love the opportunity to later play the game they helped influence.
We are well aware of just how unpolished Realm of Strife appears to be. That is a big part of why we are here on Kickstarter. By backing us, you can help us take Realm of Strife to the next level.
While it may already be playable, there is still a great deal of development, testing, and editing that needs to go into Realm of Strife before we're ready to call it complete. That costs money, and because it's free to play, that means we need your help.
Here's a quick run-down of some of what your funding accomplishes:
- Completion of the Race and Class pages on the RoS website (which includes flushing out content, editing, and plenty of flavor text)
- Additional testing and balancing of game mechanics
- Site-wide editing, polishing and linking of pages to ensure you can always easily access the information you need
- Development of a cleaner version of the RoS bestiary (we call it the Codex of Creation)
- A Players Guide for beginners
- More examples, and even some video tutorials, for demonstrating many of the core rules
- Addition of "off-line" mechanics for many Secondary Skills (i.e. how an Occupational skill generates income between play sessions)
- Development of a more in depth system for crafting materials and pricing
- Clarification and documentation on many of the "unwritten rules" that seem to accumulate as we continue to play test the game
- And so much more...
Full Color Art Package
Unlocks if the project reaches $10,000
This stretch goal will provide much needed artwork to the Realm of Strife. It includes full color character art for each of the current 28 classes done by the very talented Hugo Solis (known for his work on the "Deep Magic" Pathfinder RPG supplement from Kobold Press). We're also in discussions for a cartography package as well. As an added bonus; if this goal is achieved, all associated art will be included in each Class Codex.
New Class Mechanic
Unlocks if the project reaches $12,000
By adding one new class mechanic it would generate eight brand new classes to Realm of Strife. No small order; one requiring not only plenty of development and testing, but also additional class artwork. We're still tossing around some ideas but as we get closer to this goal we'll announce the new class mechanic.
New Continent and/or Regions
Unlocks if the project reaches $14,000
We are by no means done with the global map of Realm of Strife and it's well known that many uncharted regions exist; there is even rumor of entire continents waiting for discovery across the vast oceans. What new races and civilizations will we discover together?
Realm of Strife Web App
Unlocks if the project reaches $17,000
While we love the complex strategic combat found in Realm of Strife we are always looking for ways to streamline it without dumbing it down. One way to do so would be to create a Web App for tracking your class mechanic and resources. A daunting task, but one we think would make playing Realm of Strife even more enjoyable, by maintaining the strategic depth of the rule set and the tactile appeal of dice rolling, but taking care of all that pesky resource tracking and calculation.
Stay tuned for more...
Here are some additional details regarding our backer rewards.
Thanks for backing us!
Due to our dynamic class system and limitless character customization options, everything touches everything else. As a result, the Realm of Strife rule set has to be organized in a non-linear fashion.
The Class Codex makes finding the specific information you need less overwhelming. It's an all-in-one PDF document that contains everything you need to play as a given class in Realm of Strife without having to search through web content that doesn't pertain to your class.
The Class Codex includes class descriptions, skills, abilities, build options, and lore and history; all drawing on content on the website, but organized specifically for your desired class. Add to that additional content such as tips and tricks not found on the website and you have an essential companion to getting the most out of your class.
The Class Codex is included in many of our rewards. Back one today and at the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign you will be able to select a Class Codex from any of the 28 existing classes (or from the 8 new classes if we hit our second stretch goal).
Exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign, every Class Codex will include a personalized thank you page signed by the creator of Realm of Strife.
Pitch an Idea
Be a part of the design process! Pitch us your concept for a new monster, or maybe an interesting idea for a weapon or armor enchantment. Is there a game mechanic you think would make Realm of Strife better? Is there a Secondary Skill that you think we are missing? Let us know how you think it could be implemented.
While we may not use your idea exactly the way you see it, we'd love to see it incorporated in the ongoing development of Realm of Strife. We'll work with you until we can find a way to make your ideas fit.
This offer is exclusive to our Kickstarter campaign. NOW is your chance to help us design the game you want to play.
Place of Interest
World Building is an ongoing process, so why not be a part of it? Ever wish you could have an evil wizard tower named after you? How about an outlaw town run by a cartel of your own design? Or maybe you'd like to write the back story on that ominous ruined castle up on the hill top?
Once again, we can't guarantee that it will be implemented exactly as you envision, but we'll work with you to see your idea become a permanent fixture on the world maps, with its own wiki page to boot.
The Realm of Strife is a vast world, but space is still limited. Depending on the popularity of this reward it may never be available again, so do not miss your chance to make your mark on this world.
Pre-built 3-5 Player Adventure
What better way to get started in the Realm of Strife than with a pre-built adventure, tailor fit for you and your friends. Depending on which backer reward you purchase, you could even play though a multi chapter campaign, one that may even impact the ongoing lore of Realm of Strife.
In the interest of keeping development hours down, pre-built campaigns will be similar for every backer; however they will be adjusted to work with the size and composition of your group. More information will be gathered after the Kickstarter campaign wraps up so that we can get you onto your adventure as quickly as possible.
Whether you think you'll need some additional help getting started or you just like the personal touch, for those illustrious backers so inclined, the creator and developer of Realm of Strife will come and assist your GM in running you though a play session (or even act as your GM if you so desire).
Unfortunately, GM Assistance would only be available in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and travel, accommodation, or other related costs are not included. You will be contacted after the campaign concludes to set up a date, time, and location for the event.
Risks and challenges
By keeping Realm of Strife free we run into a unique challenge. The end product of our successful Kickstarter campaign isn't something that we can charge for. Our backer rewards have to be their own entity apart from the main project itself, offering something that makes it worth your while as a backer, yet doesn't distract us from the goal of actually completing the game.
It's difficult to predict exactly how many people will back us at the various reward levels. We are obligated to fulfill our promised rewards, but for some of them, we need to sell a certain number of them before they are actually net positive to the campaign goal. This is a recognized risk to our approach.
Another risk is a possible under estimation of the time it will take to accomplish all of our goals for a complete and polished version of Realm of Strife. This could result in a delay for some of the backer rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
