49 shades of grey is a catching card game for two people. It requests to have a good eye, brains and tactical skills. The 49 cards are printed in different shades of grey on both sides and on the front side they are numbered from 1 (light grey) to 49 (dark grey). Can you guess the hidden number by assessing the shade of grey?
Rules of the game
At the beginning both players get 9 cards. The cards must be held in a way that the opponent sees the back of all of your cards (shades of grey without the numbers). The rest of the cards are stacked with the numbers facing down. The goal is to create a sequence of numbers as long as possible by replacing the cards in your hand by those on the deck of cards.
Player 1 begins and can guess once which number the card on top of the deck has by assessing its shade of grey. Player 2 can decide if player 1 tipped too high, too low or exactly right. If player 2 is right with his assumption he gets the card. If he is wrong, player 1 gets it.
The person winning the move now has 10 cards in the hand and has to decide which one he or she wants to put down. At the end of the move both players always have 9 cards in their hands. The discarded cards are put on a separate stack and are not used any longer.
Next, player 2 can guess the number of the card on top of the deck. The game is going on until the whole deck of cards is used up.
At the end, the following points are distributed from the cards in each players hands:
- Single card --> 1 point
- 2 cards in a row (e.g. 11+12) --> 4 points
- 3 cards in a row (e.g. 11-13) --> 9 points
- 4 cards in a row (e.g. 11-14) --> 16 points
- 5 cards in a row (e.g. 11-15) --> 25 points
- 6 cards in a row (e.g. 11-16) --> 36 points
- 7 cards in a row (e.g. 11-17) --> 49 points
- 8 cards in a row (e.g. 11-18) --> 64 points
- 9 cards in a row (e.g. 11-19) --> 81 points
Every card is to be accounted for, not only the longest series of cards. The maximum points achieved are 81, the minimum 9 (9 single cards). To figure out the overall winner the players can either define the number of rounds to play or the total of points to score for a win.
The rule of the game are available in english, german and french.
