A Quick Video From Mike Mason
Who is Mike Mason? Mike Mason is the co-writer of the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition, Keeper's Rulebook. Yeah, he's the one driving us all mad with his amazing games.
The man himeself, Mike, "how much can I fit in my leather document wallet", Mason.
Welcome to our first Kickstarter.
Here at TYPE40 we have been designing and making high end, in-world artefacts from pop culture, movies, TV and games for over five years.
It’s hard but rewarding work and what keeps us going is cosmic horror and existential angst. I am sure you can relate. Our weekly game of Call of Cthulhu was the only thing keeping us sane!
It made perfect sense to combine the two. So we met with Chaosium late last year and discussed several projects, all of which excited us like a Shoggoth in a ball pit. We had so many ideas that it was hard to pick just one, but after some discussion we decided on the beautiful, handmade, leather document wallet you see right here on these pages.
We wanted to make something that our group could use to carry their books and character sheets, store a tablet, last for years and look great. It also had to have all the hallmarks of quality and high end craftsmanship that we put into every single item in the existing TYPE40 portfolio.
With the blessing of the Great Old Ones from Chaosium we came up with a folder that is functional, looks good but is even nicer to hold and use.
Not only that, but just for Kickstarter, we are making each folder with black press studs and yellow stitching, reminiscent of the document wallets used in the 1920s. We are calling them our Black and Gold series and they won’t be available after the Kickstarter campaign ends.
We chose the classic leaf and star design Elder signs for the embossing and we were pleased...
...for about ten minutes.
We needed something else, something amazing, special and unique. We couldn’t simply go to our first kickstarter with “just” a leather document wallet.
It was time to “bump the lamp” , (it kind of means go the extra mile, check the link at the end of the page to find out more).
We chose to commission an original piece of art depicting Great Cthulhu to emboss on the folders and we hope you like it. We think it is amazing. It has been described as, “cool and creepy at the same time”, which we took as a compliment. It sounded like one.
So what we have produced is the highest quality gaming accessory that is functional, beautiful and unique. We are very happy with our new creation and think you will be too.
Of course, you can’t come to Kickstarter without a whole bunch of extras for people who decide to back us. So as a thank you to those who do give us their support, we have created a whole investigator’s kit for you.
So what do we have in store for you apart from the document wallet?
Own a Digital Copy of the beautiful Great Cthulhu embossing artwork designed by Seth Laster as seen above.
The Great Cthulhu artwork on a signed postcard.
A handmade leather key fob embossed with an Elder sign. Cut from the same leather as the document wallet. The key fob will match perfectly.
A limited edition, Elder sign, challenge coin.
The challenge coin will be made from steel, have raised detail and be antique gold in colour and sandblasted black finish. Giving a high contrast and textured feel.
An Elder sign embossed, black leather, investigator’s notepad.
Keeping your notes safe from prying eyes, no matter how many there might be.
Each pledge level will be strictly limited to a maximum of 100. This means that all of the extra items you get here on Kickstarter will never been seen again anywhere else.
But can we deliver?
Yes, yes we can. This is our job and we work on projects like this full time, all the time. It’s just what we do.
We have had the pleasure of making high end replicas and props for fans, enthusiasts and celebrities for over five years including Stan Lee and Chris Hemsworth.
We love what we do and we live for Call of Cthulhu. We put our hearts into everything we make and feel the stars are right for us to bring the ideas we have for CoC to life and make some spectacular in-world artefacts for gamers like us.
We have brought this one to Kickstarter for a variety of reasons. To learn all about the platform, to reach a new audience, one who appreciates Call of Cthulhu in particular and last, but not least, to show you that we can do it, because we already have future Kickstarters planned if this one goes well.
We plan on creating some spectacular in-world artefacts that will enhance you gaming experience, be useful and look great displayed. What we want to do is utter madness but we can’t do it without you.
We have a clearly defined schedule, based on previous experience and excellent relationships with our material suppliers.
What happens next?
We are ready to go. We have the prototypes made, the patterns for the leather, the test molds for the coins, the artwork is done and all the design work is finished. All we need is your support.
Bump The Lamp - have a look , it really is worth a watch of the video.
All shipping costs will be calculated and added to your pledge after the campaign is successful. We will be shipping worldwide and have estimated amount to give some indication so there are no horrible surprises.
To be eligible for Add Ons you must have pledged at the $10 or more pledge level, To Sleep, Perchance to Dream.
Once the Kickstarter is over we will gather our forces and contact everyone who has backed so you can choose your extras

Risks and challenges
We understand that every project comes with risk and we have already made steps to mitigate them where possible.
Risks we have already identified include:
Although the supply or leather is reliable, there can be issues around quantity. It is possible that an overly successful campaign would create the need for higher volumes of leather required from suppliers than normal. This would put a strain on supply and thus a strain on production. The consequence would be a delayed delivery schedule. However, we would know about that well in advance of the beginning of production and be able to communicate that to backers.
Each of these folders is made by hand. One at a time. They are not mass produced and thus take a set amount of time to make each one. That time cannot be effectively reduced without compromising quality, which is not an option. Again, an overly successful campaign may put stress upon production. This can be managed internally here at TYPE40. We have specifically put aside time in our work week to dedicate to this kickstarter if it should be successful.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
