Welcome to our second Kickstarter!
After the success of our first Kickstarter, we decided to go all out and bring to you four, hardcover, leather bound and embossed, mythos based journals, for Cthulhu Investigators and Keepers.
Edit: We've been ask by a few backers where they can get the leather document wallet from the first Kickstarter and featured right here on these pages.
You can check them out here - LINK
Edit finished: back to the task in hand...
Designed to enhance your gaming experience, the journals are inspired by the works of Lovecraft himself. Three journals themed around At the Mountains of Madness, The Call of Cthulhu and The Dunwich Horror. The fourth is a Mythos Flora and Fauna journal documenting an investigators descent into madness.
At 8 x 5 inches and with 200 pages of quality notepaper inside, they are the perfect size to be used in game for note taking or to map out your Call of Cthulhu campaigns.
The four journals will come in two brown and two black leather hardcovers and each will have it's own embossing art.
Below we have also included the Masks of Nyarlathotep emboss art. Join the Carlyle expedition.
At the Mountains of Madness will will sport the "Antarctic Expedition" motif as seen in the picture above
The Call of Cthulhu will have embossed on it The Stars Align symbol
The Dunwich Horror will show The MU Letterhead sigil.
The Flora and Fauna journal will have The MU Botanical Society symbol.
The journals evoke the feeling of discovering an artefact full of esoteric script or hidden clues, but this time, you are the dread author.
Featuring exclusive art from the talented HP Lovecraft Historical Society, including some never seen in print before , these hard cover, leather bound journals will transport you back in time to the desk of Henry Armitage himself.
Why We Chose Journals
We wanted each journal to emulate those found during games and in Lovecraft's own stories. To give investigators a chance to tell their own stories, to document their own descent into madness. Perhaps, later to be found and read by others. I can think of nothing that would excite me more than a player showing me their journal after a long campaign, filled with madness, clues and strange events. Personal, unique, exciting.
The Flora and Fauna journal features original artwork by talented artist, Seth Laster. Inspired by Victorian era Flora and Fauna books, with a distinctly mythos twist.
"Clutching your journal, sketching into it the madness you dare not acknowledge, you know that you are coming to the end. Soon you will turn the last page and you must sketch your final piece. A self portrait. What have you become?”
Every investigators nightmare...
...and that is where it gets really good.
Journals for Your Campaigns
Chaosium has asked us to make a series of Campaign Journals for their existing and future Call of Cthulhu games, including the up coming release of Masks of Nyarlethotep. WHICH WE ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT ARGGHHGHH!
Sorry, just a bout of temporary insanity there.
In fact, if we hit our targets we will get to work straight away on a MoN journal, which, may even get added here, as an add on, in time for the launch of Masks.
Exclusive Backer Rewards
But you don't want to know all that, you want to know what exclusive Kickstarter content we have on offer.
We are going to produce exclusive Flora and Fauna postcards with art not used in the journal that wont ever be seen anywhere else. There will also be an exclusive challenge coin for backers only.
Limited Edition Hardcover Slipcase sets.
To really kick it up a notch we are offering Limited Edition slipcase sets signed by Servitor of the Outer Gods himself , Mike Mason.
Each set will contain one of each journal. Embossed on the front and safely tucked inside a protective slipcase. Each will come with a signed certificate of authenticity. Numbered and sealed.
We will produce only 100 of these.
A true collectors piece.
Which Brings us to Stretch Goals
We unlocked a secret compartment and found...
I have just returned from the printers after spending the morning talking about physical ephemera and printing.
Why was I there?
I was there because you hit our first stretch goal and I got excited. We have been pouring over the assets from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society and taking some expert advice from them and the printers and think we have picked out some winners.
So, we will be including some physical ephemera in each journal. From the vast HPLHS library of assets we have chosen some of our favorites.
But, don't take my word for it, here is a message from Andrew Leman himself.
The second stretch goal we want to offer is the inclusion of a fountain pen. To scribe all your insane writings with and accompany you on your investigations.
As our third and final stretch goal, we would like to give everyone an A4 colour botanical print of one of Seth Laster's terrifyingly beautiful Mythos Flora and Fauna imaginings.
We are excited to announce that we will be offering our official Masks of Nyarlathotep Campaign Journal as an add on. The Masks journal will be available to backers at the Expedition Member and higher.
We have been asks for some details about the Masks Journal.
The Masks journal will contain NO spoilers from the campaign.
Join the original 1919 Carlyle expedition. We wanted the journal to be 100% use-able during your campaign of Masks and not compromise your enjoyment. So, the journal is designed from the perspective of the original Carlyle expedition. Fill it with your story and enjoy the immersive ephemera printed within.
The Masks Journal will be available as an add on for Expedition Member and higher levels.
What happens next?
We are ready to go. We have the prototypes made, the patterns for the leather, the test molds for the coins, the artwork is done and all the design work is finished. All we need is your support.
All shipping costs will be calculated and added to your pledge after the campaign is successful. We will be shipping worldwide and have estimated amount to give some indication so there are no horrible surprises.

Risks and challenges
We understand that every project comes with risk and we have already made steps to mitigate them where possible.
Risks we have already identified include:
Although the supply or leather is reliable, there can be issues around quantity. It is possible that an overly successful campaign would create the need for higher volumes of leather required from suppliers than normal. This would put a strain on supply and thus a strain on production. The consequence would be a delayed delivery schedule. However, we would know about that well in advance of the beginning of production and be able to communicate that to backers.
The time taken to make the journals and the stretch goals, particularly the ephemera is not inconsiderable. That time cannot be effectively reduced without compromising quality, which is not an option. Again, an overly successful campaign may put stress upon production. This can be managed internally here at TYPE40. We have specifically put aside time in our work schedule to dedicate to this kickstarter if it should be successful.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
