About this project
Seadrift vs. the Big Guy
“They don’t call the Texas Water Safari The World’s Toughest Canoe Race’ for nothing. In addition to the length, the challenges include whitewater rapids, multiple portages, and the relentless, soul-sapping Texas heat. Competitors have four days and four hours to paddle from San Marcos, in the center of the state, to the shy little town of Seadrift on the Gulf Coast. There is no prize money for the winners; just Texas-size bragging rights for the finishers.”
Larry Rice, in July 2009 Canoe & Kayak Magazine
About this Project:
June 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the world's toughest canoe race and the first entry of all go, light prep, get it done Jeff McAdams into the race. This project will document the personalities, history, and traditions of the world's toughest canoe race while it follows Jeff, a larger-than-life, big and brash jokester as he paddles from San Marcos to Sea Drift with his wits, a few bottles of water, minimal training, and a significant amount of grit. -All because his friends said he couldn't. Although Jeff has participated in triathalons, half marathons , and the 100 mile Nijmegen race in previous years, participation in the Safari may prove to be his undoing. Can his pride and determination overcome years of beer and cigarettes? One thing is for certain. Whether or not Jeff is able to make it, this is going to be funny. With his self depreciating humor and infectious laugh, the mishaps and triumphs will be good entertainment.
What is the project
The project will document the history of the race, the behind the scene personalities and associated feuds, the drama associated with 72 hours of sleep deprivation, and the struggle of a 42 year old man to hit the goal of completing the race while being filmed for the entire 260 mile stretch
Why are we making this film
2 reasons -
- 1. It's the 50th anniversary of the toughest, best, and most publicized canoe race in the world and it's in our backyard
2. two of Jeff's closest friends and one of his worst enemies said he couldn't do it
What will the contribution be used for
100% of funding will be used for the filming, editing, and production costs associated with making a great documentary. See FAQ

Why...No really why do this race with light prep? Even with long preparation its grueling, tough, and painful.
The people that know me well, know that there is really no answer to that. Just a shrug, smile and the comment "well, that's Jeff". Just like the video says there are a number of reasons. A couple that were not mentioned in the video are that I've wanted to do it for quite some time AND 6 out of 10 people within 30 miles of the race start don't know about it! Time to change that stat.
All of the money raised is going to film, edit and finalize a world class documentary. Heck, we've already been approached by a couple of major film festivals and a large broadcaster that have expressed an interest in the project and that's just with the trailer. I've seen the budget - this is truly just a kickstart,.
The cause is filming the race. We're not saving trees, water, or baby seals (not that those causes are not important). We are going to make a great film that will be true and wildly entertaining.
I've been known to tell a tall tale from time to time. KickStarter was a logical place to help friends, family and everyone else understand that this is really happening and not the same bold talk you hear across the room from time to time.
1) You'll help make a great film 2) I'll be grateful. Having Jeff grateful to you is a feather in your cap that you can pull any time.... Ask around.
