Please note that we've massively upgraded our Pledge Rewards! As Kickstarter won't allow us to edit the Pledge Rewards on the right-hand side of this screen after the campaign has started, please see the "Pledge Levels" section below for the awesome rewards these levels now contain!
Welcome to the Capharnaum kickstarter! Help us launch the spectacular product line for the English version of this fantastic roleplaying game! We've already funded the beautiful 400-page hardback core book, and we're now embarking on the complete line of adventures, supplements, and support material into 2018 and beyond! Do you like movies like Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Clash of the Titans? The legends of the One Thousand and One Nights? The stories of the Greek gods and heroes, of Atlantis, of the lone and level sands, the curse of the mummy, the pharaohs, of crusaders and Byzantium, the clash of myths and civilisations? Then look no further - Capharnaum is here!
Thanks to your support, we've now funded the release of the 400-page hardback core book of CAPHARNAUM - TALES OF THE DRAGON-MARKED, a complete standalone fantasy roleplaying game. This initial release is in beautiful two-colour print, with sixteen gorgeous full colour plates; but we're now hoping to reach the stretch goal of releasing the entire book with full-colour artwork. We already have the text ready for editing and layout, and anticipate releasing the core book in PDF format in March 2018 and in print in April 2018.
Capharnaum also has a range of supplements and adventures which we would like to produce, including a player's guide, screen, bestiary, atlas, and epic campaign, plus many standalone adventures. We've exceeded our initial funding total, and have already unlocked the Map of the Known World, the Map of Jazirat, the Scrolls of Yasminabad adventure, the Arcana of Adventure player's guide, and the Desert Rose adventure as Kickstarter stretch goals, and we're hoping you'll help us do even more! Check out "What's In the Books?" below for more on these awesome supplements.
You can also check out Capharnaum today, in THE TEARS OF AMPHAROOL, our free Quickstart Rules and Introductory Adventure!
We've been receiving questions from you about what to do about your higher pledges for products which don't look like they're going to get unlocked as stretch goals. We've been doing some planning and projections, and here's what we'd like to propose to you. We hope you'll like the suggestion!
Basically, if you pledge at a level which includes a stretch goal, then we'll guarantee that you will receive the books in the stretch goal when we release them over the next 2 years. Some will be obviously much sooner than that, but some may take a little longer - as you'll see below, there are a good number of books, plus the screen! In Kickstarter parlance, we're effectively going to be treating your pledges as subscriptions to our Capharnaum publications over the next 2 years.
This affects the following pledge levels. Also, see "And as a Special Thank-You!" below for some cool bonuses we'd like to include.
- £15 Core Rulebook PDF and £30 Core Rulebook Print + PDF: These pledges remain unchanged (but see "And as a Special Thank-You!" below!) - you'll receive your Capharnaum core book in PDF in March and in print in April 2018.
- £35 PDF Master: You'll receive every Capharnaum PDF we produce over the next 2 years. This includes any additional PDFs we publish in that period which aren't listed below.
- £50 Print + PDF Master: You'll receive the Capharnaum RPG core book hardback in April, plus every Capharnaum PDF we produce over the next 2 years.
- £70 Al-Rawi the Generous: You'll receive the Capharnaum RPG core book hardback in April, plus 4 print copies of the Arcana of Adventure player's guide as soon as it's produced (ETA is Q2-Q3 2018), plus every Capharnaum PDF we produce over the next 2 years.
- £150 Capharnaum Cornucopeia: You'll receive the Capharnaum RPG core book hardback in April, plus print copies and PDF copies of every Capharnaum book and product we produce over the next 2 years. This includes any additional Capharnaum products we produce in this period which aren't included in the list below.
- £500 Capharnaum Core Art Master: You'll be drawn in as a character in the Capharnaum core book, based on portrait photos of yourself and together with a character sheet writeup and backstory, and of course you'll receive the Capharnaum RPG core book hardback in April, plus print copies and PDF copies of every Capharnaum book and product we produce over the next 2 years.
We want you to know how important your support is in launching the Capharnaum line. So, we'd like to offer you a range of PDFs from our transhuman science-fiction RPG Mindjammer, as a complimentary thank-you for all your help! As follows:
- All pledges up to £50 will receive a free PDF copy of the 500-page core book MINDJAMMER - THE ROLEPLAYING GAME and a free ebook of the 440-page novel MINDJAMMER.
- £70 Al-Rawi the Generous: Additionally, you'll receive a PDF copy of the new Mindjammer Player's Guide.
- £150 Capharnaum Cornucopeia will receive PDF copies of everything currently available in the Mindjammer line (that's 13 books!)
- £500 Core Art Master will receive print + PDF copies of everything currently available in the Mindjammer line - that's 13 books! - note that you'll pay shipping for these in the Backerkit pledge manager.
All additional Mindjammer digital products will be sent to you via the Backerkit pledge manager once the Kickstarter has completed.
Now that the Capharnaum Kickstarter has funded, we're also able to take pledges via Paypal. To pledge by Paypal, simply send the total amount for your pledge to email@example.com. Please include a message with your payment with the following items of information:
- Your full name
- Your email address
- The Pledge Level and any Add-Ons you're pledging for.
We'll email you back confirming your pledge (please allow 24 hours just in case of time zone differences), and once the Kickstarter has closed we'll also send you an invite to the Backerkit Pledge Manager where you'll be able to provide your delivery address details and pay for shipping.
Here are our Pledge Levels - check the graphics below to see exactly what each Pledge Level contains! (Note that we've updated these, so they supersede the contents listed in the right-hand menu.)
Our initial goal in this Kickstarter was to fund the production and print run of the 400-page hardback core book of CAPHARNAUM - THE TALES OF THE DRAGON-MARKED. Thanks to your support, we've smashed through that goal, and we're now hoping we can unlock funding to produce even more exciting new products for your Capharnaum game!
We've already unlocked five of these "stretch goals": the gorgeous full-colour A2 poster maps of the Known World and of the Jazirat peninsula; the 30-page PDF adventure "The Scrolls of Yasminabad", the 48-page "Arcana of Adventure" player's guide in print + PDF, and the 15-page PDF adventure "The Desert Rose" - and we're now heading towards even more!
However, note that even if we don't unlock our planned books as stretch goals, we'll still be producing these using conventional publishing methods over the coming 2 years, so you'll still receive the products you've pledged for! Basically, unlocking them as stretch goals gives us greater flexibility and transparency (and allows us to do some cool things too!), but we're committed to the line, so as we mentioned above we'll be treating your higher-level pledges as subscriptions to all the products below.
As we reach ("unlock") each of the stretch goals, we'll reveal a new one and some bonuses along the way, so keep checking back! With your help and participation, the greatest mysteries of Capharnaum are now going to be revealed - we have some awesomely exciting products to bring you!
The following list shows our currently unlocked stretch goals, marked as "locked" to begin with - including the adventures THE SCROLLS OF YASMINABAD and THE DESERT ROSE, the 48-page ARCANA OF ADVENTURE - the Capharnaum Player's Guide, and the CAPHARNAUM core book with full-colour artwork throughout, in print and PDF! You can find out more information about all the books in "What's In the Books?" below, and even order additional copies in the "Add-Ons" section below.
A Note on the Map Stretch Goals
Note that we've added two stretch goals at £15K and £16.5K for A2 (ANSI-C size) poster maps of the Known World of Capharnaum and the peninsula of Jazirat respectively. These maps *will* be treated as "books" for any pledge where you're getting "all the PDFs" or "all the books in print", which means we'll be providing PDFs of the maps to those backers with PDF Master-type pledge levels, and physical print copies of the poster maps to backers with "Everything in Print"-type pledge levels. You can also add extra physical print copies of the maps as "Add-Ons" (see "Add-Ons" below for how to do that. Any questions, please just ask!
We also want to spread the word about the fascinating and action-packed Capharnaum universe and the unique opportunity of this Kickstarter to bring its adventures to the English-speaking world. As you help us get the word out, you'll also help us unlock some fun free bonus products, leading up to an original Capharnaum adventure LAUGHTER IN THE FOREST OF FORGETTING, by Sarah Newton, author of Mindjammer, Monsters & Magic, Achtung! Cthulhu, and The Chronicles of Future Earth, and project lead on CAPHARNAUM - THE TALES OF THE DRAGON-MARKED.
CAPHARNAUM - THE TALES OF THE DRAGON-MARKED is a fantasy roleplaying game set in an imaginary Arabia-like world. It borrows from the tales of the One Thousand and One Nights, as well as semitic legends and the ancient and mediaeval epics. Capharnaum doesn't aim to be a historical game, but a heroic one, a flamboyant refraction of historical, cultural, and mythical themes, filled with light and thrilling adventure!
In Capharnaum, you play the Dragon-Marked, heroic individuals with a special destiny, born with a birthmark on their backs in the shape of a dragon's claw. The Dragon-Mark announces to the world that you are capable of astonishing feats, for good or evil. Chosen by mystical dragons in accordance with an unknown divine will, you are offered a place in the great game of the gods. You'll be cast into colourful adventures, political, military, and magical intrigues, and much more...
Capharnaum is a simple yet profound game. We all know the tales of Sinbad, of Ali Baba, of Aladdin and Scheherezade - we grew up with them, they form part of our personal culture. The world of Capharnaum is familiar, easy to pick up and play.
And yet - scratch the surface, and a whole world opens up. Meticulously researched, Capharnaum aims to provide fantastic takes on real-world Mediterranean cultures, from ancient Greece and Rome, Egypt and Sumeria, right through to the crusader kingdoms, dark age and mediaeval Europe, the kingdoms of Africa, India, and the distant East. Uniquely, Capharnaum is centred upon a fantastic version of the Middle-East, where all these cultures meet, clash, come into conflict with the profound cultures of the peninsula of Jazirat, and where something new is being born.
As the Dragon-Marked, you transcend cultural differences. You're united by an unknown, mystical, yet common destiny. Side by side with people who would otherwise be your foes, you adventure in this vibrant, chaotic land, where the fate of the future is at play, and where you are destined to change the world...
The Capharnaum Game System
Capharnaum uses a tried and tested custom game system which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, with a second edition of the original French roleplaying game. Our Kickstarter includes all of the updates and rules modifications of the second edition game. It's a d6-based system, a modified dice pool with a semi-roll-and-keep mechanic. Simple yet flexible, it combines skills and attributes in rolls against difficulties, resolving into levels of success or failure in a highly cinematic style. It's grounded in traditional concepts of hit points, armour values, wounds, and healing, but also expands into genre-specific rules tweaks such as Dragon Dice and Constellations which let you really feel the power of the Dragon-Marked course through your character.
One of the key components of the Capharnaum system is the concept of paths: mystical associations which you belong to, which represent your view of your role in the world (your "character class", to some extent), but which also provide you with cool and increasingly awesome abilities as you play.
Advancement is built into the Capharnaum system. As one of the Dragon-Marked, you're already an individual with great potential - but this is an age which calls for Heroes, and the rules let you rise to the occasion and change the world!
Who is "Al-Rawi"?
In Capharnaum, in the fine tradition of Middle-Eastern story-telling, we call the game master "Al-Rawi", an Arabic word meaning "the Story Teller". When you play Capharnaum, you're not only playing a roleplaying game, but participating in an ancient tradition millennia old!
The Capharnaum kickstarter offers you the gorgeous 400-page hardback of the CAPHARNAUM - TALES OF THE DRAGON-MARKED roleplaying game, as well as a line of supplements, adventures, and support material. Remember - we're hoping to unlock as many of these books as stretch goals to facilitate our funding, but we're going to be producing these anyway using conventional publishing methods even if we don't unlock them. So pledge away!
The CAPHARNAUM - TALES OF THE DRAGON-MARKED Core Book
This beautiful 400-page hardback is a complete roleplaying game, containing everything you need to play. It includes:
- A simple and elegant game system, easy to learn yet with plenty of depth during play (see "The Capharnaum Game System" above).
- A flexible magic system which lets you improvise your own effects, or use preconfigured spells, and also a unique system for using the magical clay talismans of the ancients.
- Cultural and character creation details for the Saabi and the Shiradim of the peninsula of Jazirat, the crusading Quarterian kingdoms of the West, and the ancient Agalanthians, fallen from greatness and who once ruled the world.
- A bestiary of foes to test the hardened adventurer!
- An introductory adventure.
- Maps, gazetteers, legends, mysteries and treasures - and much more!
ARCANA OF ADVENTURE - The Capharnaum Player's Guide
Our first major stretch goal unlocks the ARCANA OF ADVENTURE player's guide (as well as the new "Generous GM" pledge level AL-RAWI THE GENEROUS). This 48-page softback is intended as a reference for players of Capharnaum, both at the table and away. It provides a detailed introduction to the world of Capharnaum, a summary of the rules and the initial abilities of the main character paths - everything you need as a Capharnaum player.
THE EATER OF THE GODS AND OTHER TALES - Adventure Pack
Through the Kickstarter campaign we're unlocking a series of short adventures, initially in PDF format, but eventually building up to print products in their own right. There are two of these, of which THE EATER OF THE GODS AND OTHER TALES is the first. This 135-page adventure pack includes the following five adventures:
- The Scrolls of Yasminabad
- The Desert Rose
- The Arrow of Heaven
- The Caravan of the Monkey King
- The Eater of the Gods
The Map of the Known World - A2 poster map
The beautiful cartography in the Capharnaum core book is just begging for treatment as a poster map, so that's what this is - an A2 poster map of the Capharnaum Known World, in gorgeous full colour.
The Map of Jazirat - A2 poster map
The companion to the Known World map, the Map of Jazirat focusses in detail on the peninsula of Jazirat, the heart of your Capharnaum campaign.
The Mysteries of Al-Rawi - GM's Screen and Companion
Not only is this a stunning GM's Screen, it also comes with a 72-page softback GM's Companion containing all manner of campaign secrets. For the eyes of Al-Rawi only!
The Fables and Chimeras Bestiary
While the Capharnaum core book contains a bestiary of essential creatures from the land of Jazirat, this 156-page softback takes you out into the Known World, bringing you details of creatures from the far flung realms and even beyond, with legendary beasts, the inhuman Krekhin, demons, dragons, and more!
The Atlas of the Known World
This 162-page softback brings you lavish detail on the known world of Capharnaum beyond that of the core book - but goes even further, with maps and gazetteers of areas legendary to most, including Al Fariq'n, Nir Manel, and distant dreaming Asijawi!
The Kingdom of Heaven epic campaign
This massive campaign pack contains hundreds of hours of playable material, a truly epic campaign, playable either straight through or as a campaign framework for all your Capharnaum games. It's a 300-page softback, and breathtaking in scale.
The Anvil of the Gods
Well, we couldn't produce an RPG line without letting our Mindjammer Press team loose on it! "The Anvil of the Gods" is an 80-page adventure by Sarah Newton and the Mindjammer Press team. A whole new road to adventure for your Capharnaum campaign!
Add-Ons are additional copies of Capharnaum products you can add to your pledge; at the moment they include copies of the Capharnaum core book and the two unlocked maps, and as the Kickstarter progresses we'll be adding more! See the Shipping section below for how Add-Ons affect your shipping.
How to Add an Add-On
To add an Add-On to your pledge, simply click on the blue MANAGE button next to your pledge total at the top of this page, to change your pledge total to include the cost of the Add-Ons you want, as shown below.
For example, if you're currently pledged at the £30 (appx $40) Capharnaum RPG Core Rulebook Print + PDF pledge level, and you'd like to add a copy of the Map of the Known World as an Add-On, simply click on MANAGE and increase your pledge total from £30 to £35 (appx $47). When the Kickstarter ends, we'll invite you to a pledge manager where you can tell us exactly what your pledge total covers, and also manage your shipping, shipping address, and so on.
Note that all book Add-Ons are printed physical copies; PDFs are included free with the PDF Master and Print + PDF Master pledge levels and above. Any pledge level may choose Add-Ons.
Shipping will be calculated for you automatically in the Backerkit Pledge Manager, which we'll invite you to at the end of the Kickstarter. We'll also liaise with you in Backerkit to find out just when, where and how you'd like to receive your books. You can use the table below to get a rough idea of the cost of shipping.
You can share shipping costs with one or more friends. One backer will pay for the shipping for everyone.
You can also pick up for free from the Modiphius London office. Convention pickups are possible but we don't guarantee them.
We like to support retailers through our Kickstarters and offer an attractive package. You can use the RETAILER pledge to make a deposit of £20 towards your order of a minimum of 6 core books at the usual wholesale pricing. After the Kickstarter we will contact you to see what other items you would like to add to your order but you only pay for your order when we are ready to ship. All books come with PDF versions. We will require confirmation of retail ID.
Mindjammer Press has assembled an expert team to accompany you on your adventures in the world of Capharnaum, including:
Sarah Newton is the award-winning RPG author of Mindjammer, Achtung! Cthulhu, Legends of Anglerre, Fate Worlds: Burn Shift, The Chronicles of Future Earth, Monsters & Magic, and more, and is project lead on CAPHARNAUM - THE TALES OF THE DRAGON-MARKED. Co-director of Mindjammer Press, she ran the successful Kickstarter for MINDJAMMER - THE ROLEPLAYING GAME in 2015, which has delivered ten brand new products for the Mindjammer line to date. Sarah is a French speaker and a former translator, and has worked closely with translator José (below) on the translations of the QIN and KURO RPGs. She's a huge fan of the CAPHARNAUM RPG, and works closely with François, Raphaël, and the whole Capharnaum team at Studio Deadcrows. She's responsible for the final text of Capharnaum, managing the project, editing the books, and making sure every product meets the high standards fans of Mindjammer Press and Modiphius products have come to expect.
José Luis Porfirio is a professional translator, and the translator of the whole CAPHARNAUM line. His translation credits include QIN, FIRST CONTACT: XCORPS, KURO, and SHAYO.
Jason Juta (Mindjammer, Shadowrun, Gamma World, Warhammer 40K, Battletech, Song of Ice and Fire, and much more) is Art Director of Mindjammer Press, and the creative force behind the visual identity of all our books and games, including the beautiful line of products published by the Mindjammer Kickstarter. He's also our layout artist, and will be responsible for all the visual aspects of the CAPHARNAUM line.
David Donachie (Solipsist, Legends of Anglerre, The Collective Endeavour) is both webmaster and writer at Mindjammer Press, and will be keeping a close eye on our website updates and communications at MindjammerPress.com, as well as being involved in the production process.
François Cedelle (CAPHARNAUM, VENZIA, NIGHTPROWLER, RETROFUTUR, ABYME, AMNESYA 2K51) and Raphaël Bardas (AMNESYA 2K51, CAPHARNAUM, VENZIA, ABYME) are the co-creators of the Capharnaum setting, as well as the RPG VENZIA; François is also the editor of the French line, and heads-up the production shop for Studio Deadcrows, publisher of the French version of MINDJAMMER - THE ROLEPLAYING GAME, including the ongoing work on the second edition of Capharnaum in French. He's in regular contact with Sarah discussing elements of the Capharnaum rules and setting.
Boris Courdesses is the artist behind those spectacular Capharnaum covers, and the colour panels which grace the pages of this Kickstarter.
Chris and Rita Birch and the whole team at Modiphius Entertainment are our mentors and consultants for all things Kickstarter and publishing. They provide us with a great deal of advice and support, allowing us to draw upon their experience with huge Kickstarter projects such as CONAN - ADVENTURES IN AN AGE UNDREAMED OF and STAR TREK ADVENTURES. Chris and Sarah have been working together on RPG projects for 9 years, and MODIPHIUS is also our distribution partner, providing us with services and consultancy to help us get our Kickstarter products to you, our Backers, and to the wider world, smoothly and efficiently.
Risks and challenges
This is our second Kickstarter at Mindjammer Press, and we learned a huge amount from our first Kickstarter for MINDJAMMER - THE ROLEPLAYING GAME, which delivered its products in three waves in April 2016, January 2017, and November 2017. With Capharnaum, we've made sure to have the core book already translated and the text is now being edited ready for layout, and we anticipate no delays in getting the PDF ready for March 2018 and the print version a month later. We're keeping a very close eye on the scope of the Capharnaum line, and expect to ship out further products in one or two subsequent waves at roughly 6-monthly intervals - we'll keep you updated during the Kickstarter and after.
We also feel we're uniquely positioned to produce an English-language translation of a French roleplaying game. Not only is José an experienced French-to-English RPG translator, having worked on RPGs such as QIN, YGGDRASIL, and KURO, he has also worked closely with Sarah on several of these projects. Sarah herself is a former translator, a French speaker, and knows the writers of the CAPHARNAUM game personally and is in regular contact with them. We feel we're on top of the particular issues which face translators of RPGs, and we're confident that we're in a great position to provide you with an excellent product.
We've also had a lot of experience with the Backerkit Pledge Manager and fulfilment, and welcome the fact that Backerkit can now handle shipping calculations by weight, which we expect will simplify things greatly. Nevertheless, again based on our experiences with the Pledge Manager for Mindjammer, we've built two months post-kickstarter processing into our schedule to handle the shipping administration.
The Mindjammer Kickstarter enabled us to put together a core team of experienced professionals, and we're already leveraging that with the Capharnaum Kickstarter. Jason and Sarah are in the Kickstarter production team, and Sarah has a clear schedule for the duration of the Kickstarter and dedicated time to manage it thereafter. We also have David Donachie, John Snead, Graham Spearing, and Paul Mitchener helping with comms and outreach, and of course writing if the campaign unlocks some exciting later goals!
We're also honoured and very grateful to be working with Modiphius Entertainment and GamesQuest on Kickstarter management, comms, distribution, and fulfilment. Chris Birch and his Modiphius team are always there with invaluable advice drawn from their massively successful Kickstarters, and, as with the Mindjammer Kickstarter, we expect to draw on that to help us ensure a smooth experience for all our customers!
We encountered some problems during the Mindjammer Kickstarter related to Brexit, which effectively reduced the value of our Kickstarter account balance by 15% overnight. That was an "act-of'God" event that no one at the time could have predicted, and caused us some difficulties and delays; but we're attempting to future proof our Capharnaum Kickstarter against possible "Brexit shocks" by providing budgeting contingency, a rapid delivery, and a controlled scope. We live in interesting times!
Finally, of course, Mindjammer Press is a small, family-run company, and all of us are working here because we love gaming and writing and producing games. But we're (still mostly) human, and extraordinary events in people's personal lives do happen. However, we believe that we've made some prudent provisions to make sure we're flexible enough to cope with such events, by having all the text, artwork, and layout files for the products ready to go, having multiple translators in case of necessity, and a clear translation schedule throughout the Kickstarter fulfilment period. Rest assured that we'll continue to communicate clearly and regularly to you right through the Kickstarter and its subsequent fulfilment period and let you know of any developments.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
