The Memory Wall - my 5th solo studio album. And it might be my best one yet! Pedal steel, dobro, violin & really cool harmonies.
What’s the deal Buddy?
So this is where the music business finds itself right now. At least our little corner of it. Here's our new model to keep the music coming. Well, new/old that is. Before there were big music companies paying for records to be made and promoted and published there were still troubadours and composers. Instead of trying to wow some A & R guy from EMI at an ASCAP showcase they would be duly impressing Duke Archibald the Daring or King Wilfred the Sublime or Princess Autumn the Friendly. The Duke or King or Princess would say to themselves, "Dang, this kid's good! I gotta do something to keep this stuff happening. It'll make me look good too!" They were called patrons and they used their resources (i.e. pieces of eight or ducats - you know, shiny stuff) to support the composer or troubadour in question. And we're kind of back to that now actually - except you don't have to be a Duke or King or Princess to be Daring, Sublime and Friendly. You don't even have to be rich 'cause instead of just one patron an artist (like me for instance) can have dozens or even hundreds, all chipping in what they can afford (although at a certain pledge level I will agree to address you as Duke or Princess). This is called "Crowd Funding" or "Cloud Funding" and it's how a lot of recordings get made anymore.
How does it work?
See, you have all these different pledge levels over here on the right side. And, you know, it’s not just charity - you actually get something in return. It might be as simple as a digital download and a signed copy of the finished CD (and by the way, if you think you’d want to have this CD eventually anyway - well, nows the time to get it! You don’t have to wait until I show up in your town). It could be something one of a kind like I’ll draw a portrait of you (or maybe your sweetie). Okay, I'm not Louvre material but it'll definitely be unique! Or - here’s a cool one - I will come right to your house and play a concert for you and whoever you want to invite. You could even commission your own Buddy Mondlock song! So check this stuff out and see what appeals to you. And the one thing you get no matter how much you pledge is the knowledge that you personally helped make this thing real in the world - music will exist that didn’t exist before and people will get to hear it and you had something to do with that!
One thing you should know though. If I don’t reach my goal I won’t get anything at all! So I’ll need to have at least $10,000 in pledges by the last day of my campaign. No pressure. Truth is I'm hoping I'll raise more in order to properly promote it but this will at least get it out there.
So what’s different and interesting about this album?
I've been wanting to make this one for a long time and it will not sound like any of my other recordings. They’re still my songs of course but you’ll hear pedal steel, dobro, fiddle - I even play banjo on a couple tracks. The instrumentation is more rootsy but I didn’t just go all Porter Wagner on you. For instance one song with pedal steel is also in 5/4.
I've got some amazing players and singers working with me. Dan Dugmore (pedal steel, lap steel, dobro), Kenny Malone (drums, percussion), Stuart Duncan (fiddle, mandocello), Bryn Davies (upright bass), Mike Lindauer (fretless electric bass), Celeste Krenz and the awesome Melissa Greener (great harmonies)! Google these folks - they are some of the best players and singers living on the planet right now. No lie.
The songs - lots of new stuff (Stone In My Pocket, Some Kind of Hope, The Disappearing Girl) and there are also a few that I wrote when I first got to Nashville that have been waiting for just this recording (Lost In Space, What Do I Know). The song in the video (The Ugly One) was written last fall on the island of Inisheer in Ireland with Parish Browne from Galway. There’s also a new song I wrote with Guy Clark (The Holes You Leave). There’s even one I’m especially close to that my Dad wrote the lyrics for (Central Park).
And my old friend Miles Wilkinson is co-producing and engineering this one. He co-produced Poetic Justice with me and he recorded a lot of my earlier work too. Miles also co-produced some of your favorite Guy Clark albums. Can you say Dublin Blues?
Where are you now Buddy?
Pretty much everything has been recorded but there's still so much to do (and everything has to be paid for)! First mixing, then mastering, photo's (Sr. McGuire is taking them - doesn't get better than that), artwork and layout, pressing and finally promotion so it doesn't all just go floating out into the void never to be heard again...
How can I help?
All the different pledge levels are to the right of the page here. If you want to help just click on one and follow the prompts. And you can really help by sharing this page with your facebook and twitter friends, e-mail pals, book club - you get the idea. This is really important. And last but most important...
THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND THANKS AGAIN!!!
A lot of you reading this have been with me for a long time - coming to the shows, buying the CDs, telling your friends and encouraging me all down the line. I might have slept on your sofa a time or two. I could never have gotten this far without you. I can't tell you how grateful I am. And if you're just discovering me for the first time, well, I hope you like what you hear. I sure appreciate you taking the time to listen and maybe help out too. Thank you so much!
Take Care, Buddy Mondlock
PS You can listen to some songs from my earlier recordings at my web site www.buddymondlock.com!
PPS A big thanks to my friend Larry Collins who shot and edited the videos!
