About this project
Reflowered: a Dance-Play is a multi-disciplinary theater piece written by Emma Dweck, and conceived by Emma and Ava Dweck. This workshop will be the first time the piece is "on its feet" in front of an audience.
We are passionate about Reflowered because it tells a universal story in a new way. We make theater because we believe passionately in the power of live story-telling to create empathy, open hearts, and change the world.
Reflowered is based very loosely on the Greek myth of Persephone, and was influenced by the drawings of Edward Gorey, reality tv, and many pieces of imagery, found text, and music related to manners, loss of innocence and shame.
Reflowered lives in a dreamy world of magical realism. Effie, a young woman, is missing, and her mother, Chloe, is in charge of growing the plants for the entire world. Since Effie has been gone, Chloe has become depressed and has stopped letting the plants grow. People are hungry, cold and desperate. When Jordan, an old friend, shows up, she promises to find Effie if Chloe will make the plants grow again. The two strike a deal, and thus begins Jordan’s journey into the bizarre underworld of Miss Silkhammer’s Academy for Girls (and Boys). In the Academy, Jordan finds Effie, but also a strange mix of characters and rituals, and she must ultimately determine how to rescue Effie from herself. Reflowered explores themes of female friendship, trauma and consent, and asks questions about culpability and redemption in the face of violence.
Risks and challenges
Making Theater, especially non-traditional, original theater, is a challenging process. What we love about theater is that it is alive and inherently cooperative. It can't be created by one person in a vaccuum. Because of this, finding time and resources to support 10 or 12 collaborators in a room together for a concentrated period of time is often difficult. This summer's intensive offers us the rare opportunity to focus on this work, for 10 days, as a focused team.
One challenge we are having is that Reflowered is epic in scope. It's based on a Greek Myth, and we could easily bring in 10 more collaborators if we had the time and resources. Developing a play is a process, and we are acutely aware that this phase of Reflowered is the very beginning. So the challenge for us right now is keeping it simple. The money we are trying to raise will cover the bare essentials needed to make this phase of the journey a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
