About

Imagine yourself held captive in a foul, hot room halfway around the world. You were the member of a small team, until you found yourself captured by a vicious enemy that hates you and everything you stand for, especially your need for technology.

My name is Matt Armstrong, an Army combat veteran, and COIN Impact: Operation Thunderhead is my first effort at producing an online game. This project has been entirely self-funded (with a little help from my roommate), with no outstanding debts. I have endured setbacks, learned great (difficult) lessons, but most importantly I have had the opportunity to slowly see my dream turn into a reality.

First things first, this is not a 3D first person shooter like you would play on a game system; those games are great, but you can’t play them at work or on the go. This game is designed to fit nicely in the 2D casual gaming market, and will provide countless hours of entertainment with amazing digital artwork, fun game mechanics, and community-focused team goals. The style is similar to established and successful Facebook games like Mafia Wars, but with many more random chance elements. If you are even a casual gamer, you will enjoy the fact that you can explore a city and find very powerful additions to your arsenal, instead of just completing an arbitrary quest percentage or fighting the same boss over and over.

This is the sort of casual game I always wanted to play on my phone or online, and we are not trying to take the place of your console game or graphic-intensive computer game (MMO).

When I left active military service, I earned my MBA at Texas Christian University while fulfilling my inactive reserve obligations with the Texas National Guard. I read a study in the Harvard Business Review about creating shared value and it really got me excited. Why can’t businesses approach support of non-profit partnerships as a core tenet of their business model instead of something that they just “should” or “have to” do? I decided they could and should, but in a way that builds shared success and generates valuable good will.

Our company will focus on partnerships with disabled veterans charities that follow a few basic guidelines, including transparency and low overhead.

Finally, there is so much talk recently of the American dream being dead; that it is too hard to find and keep a good job, or determine your own destiny. This is my American dream, and you can help make it happen.

Why Kickstarter?

The decision to use Kickstarter was a no-brainer. As our team is nearing completion of the game, we are in dire need of an excited player base to get in early, help us with testing, and enjoy the prestige and (in-game) power that comes from a head-start.

Kickstarter funding will be used for three main things:
1) Setting the stage for the future business model, we will be able to afford to focus on charity and giving back to the military community that is the foundation of the business.
2) Investment in code and artwork for quick additions and future releases of content, as well as a funding buffer for potential advertising, bandwidth, etc. We have a lot of good ideas to make this game fun for years to come, but every "good idea" requires money to develop.
3) Covering the cost of the (amazing) rewards inherent in a Kickstarter campaign.

The money being raised here will provide a much-needed reprieve from an effort which has been almost 100% self-funded to this point. That being said, all of the money raised here will go to fund the COIN Impact project.

Rewards

The idea behind COIN Impact Kickstarter rewards is for our initial player base to get unique products which will never be made available for sale in the future.

Some of our prizes are unique in-game items which are sure to be the most powerful for the foreseeable future and boosts that will last forever across all future game products. Some are custom merchandise from reputable veteran-owned vendors. We are even designing and striking COIN Impact challenge coins, which will have some special future in-game significance, wielded by the most powerful players. While these coins may be given to charity recipients and VIPs in the future, their Kickstarter powers will not.

Some rewards are limited, so be sure you pledge early and check back for more tiers.

Every backer that pledges $5 or more will receive their name on on the game/company website as a backer. For large donations some personal, team, or business links may be appropriate, but will be at the sole discretion of the COIN Impact team. Please contact us through Kickstarter first, if that is something that interests you.

NOTE: All rewards are expected to be shipped shortly after the Kickstarter campaign ends, allowing for production time on physical objects. I have listed them as being delivered in January or February, but your in-game items will be delivered as immediately as possible.

Stretch Goals

Along with the current (amazing) Rewards, we are working on a few more. As the project picks up steam, I will be releasing more rewards and project features. Please check back to to see our progress, and share with friends as you can. My hope is that we can also find creative ways to partner with veteran-owned businesses to help our community get stronger.

About the COIN Impact Team

Max Bolotnikov is the programming expert/advisor and high school friend of Matt. His input into programming methodology, as well as his ability to salvage the project code using a broad range of programming languages after an early setback was fundamental to the project success.

Jeff Jones is the lead programmer on the project, balancing a demanding day job with a desire to help veterans and work on an exciting project. He has an impressive ability to translate the big picture into actionable tasks and make them work.

Wes Harden is serving as the assistant programmer and helping to bridge the gap between interface design and back-end code. He is currently a student in Monterey, CA.

Tristan Denyer is a Navy veteran who served from '99-'06 and supported OEF. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and is the designer of the game interface. He was able to balance a complex play structure with simple interface to create a great user experience.

Chris Reach is the talented artist who digitally painted all of the visuals that went into creating the game. From items to scenery, he has a great eye for detail and a lot of patience. Creating the wide array of game items, interface components, and enemy variations is painstaking to say the least.

Risks and challenges

This is a big project, but I am confident of the timeline.

The introduction of this 30-day Kickstarter buffer has led me to believe we will complete the coding and (preliminary) testing long before the campaign is over, and leave room for stretch goals if they appear. That doesn't mean that everything will be 100% perfect, and I look forward to handing out prizes for the limited group of ALPHA Testers who find bugs or mistakes within the game.

I will also limit our risks in selecting vendors to produce our physical rewards. Our vendors, from physical coins to t-shirts, will first and foremost have a proven track record for quality and dependability. I want you to be satisfied with your experience and proud that you took part in launching this game.
