I have been awarded an opportunity to go to the Vytlacil Artist-in-Residence Program in Sparkhill, NY this October.
I am so thrilled to get a chance to spend the time out of the city and make art. I went to the same residency this past May and it was my first experience at an artist residency...it was incredible! I was surrounded by artists from all around the world, and friendly, eager staff who were very helpful and welcoming. The grounds were beautiful, with wooded areas, flower gardens, rustic buildings, and plenty of animals…including the flock of free-range Vytlacil chickens, or “Vyt-Chicks” as they are called. (I did just make that up.)
The peace of the environment, combined with the pleasant social experiences I shared with the people (and chickens) at Vyt, provided me with a unique experience that I don’t think exists anywhere else…I gained a new, positive outlook on making art and living. My residency experience instilled a new confidence in my abilities as an artist, and a new dedication to focusing my energy on being a full-time artist. Being in an environment without the distractions of my daily routine allows me to focus completely on my art, and allows me to be more creative and more productive.
I also discovered how awesome chickens are, and how I LOVE to paint them. Unfortunately, I didn't really discover that I had a knack for painting chickens until the end of the residency. I am excited to go back to Vytlacil this October to do a series of nature studies, and focus more on my chicken portraits, as well as at least one large portrait. This Kickstarter Project is to help me cover the cost of supplies while I am away in October. I need paint! My goal of the project is to be able to get the colors I would need to accomplish the goal of the residency: I want to focus more on painting from nature, studying patterns in nature, and thinking about how I can use these patterns in my work. I want to focus on the colors and shapes in nature, as well as visual textures that are created by the patterns.
This is a wonderful and exciting opportunity, and I appreciate your time and support!
Risks and challenges
One immediate challenge of this project is getting everything coordinated in time. I just received the residency, and it is a three weeks away. I have to be very organized about getting materials, packing, and settling my affairs in the city. Luckily, I am still mostly packed from May, and know the ropes, so I feel certain that when the funding comes through, I will be able to get everything taken care of in a timely fashion.
The biggest challenge, I fear, is getting the chickens to hold still while I paint them. I'll be working on that and will keep you updated!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
