The Not So Fun Part: Childhood Obesity in America
This is an increasing issue today where over a third of children and adolescents in America are considered obese. Research from 2012 shows that childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past 30 years.
Children and adolescents who are considered obese are more likely to become obese when reaching adulthood. This puts them at high risk for serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, heart disease, diabetes, stroke... the list goes on.
There are many factors that an contribute to this issue: overeating, lack of exercise, poor nutrition, lack of access to healthy options, and much more. Overeating is actually very common in America, where our portions can double or even TRIPLE other countries.
Childhood obesity is undeniably a huge issue for America's future generations, and not something to be ignored.
The Lunchbox I Wish I had
I am very passionate about this issue. I myself had grown up very overweight, with little to no knowledge on healthy foods. This lack of education lead to frequent eating of TV dinners and fast food. Faced with self-esteem issues, I gravitated towards video games and staying inside. I gradually shed most of these pounds. While I am physically lighter, I still carry much of the psychological weight with me. It wasn't long before I was noticing the self-esteem issues really affecting my social life and even performance in school.
With Bentobots I wanted to create something that I would have wanted when I was younger, but also something that would have had a positive impact on my life.
How Will Bentobots Help?
Through Portion Control: Each character themed lunchbox is divided in 4 different compartments. They were inspired by bentos, or lunchboxes from Japan that typically have separated portions. We knew this was the answer to preventing overeating in a fun and unique way!
Through Storytelling: Research has shown that when kids make their own eating choices, they are highly influenced by characters they recognize and love. With Bentobots we hope to create a new group of heroes to inspire kids to make the right decisions.
Bentobots are food eating robots from a planet called Robotopia. They find Earth after being lost during a routine space exploration trip. Earth, however has been taken over by the evil mastermind Dr. Zork!
Meet the first 3 bots! (Learn more about them at Bentobots.com)
Kickstarter Exclusive Offer!
The first 3 Bentobots will come with a physical copy of the limited edition comic, the first issue in the ongoing series. The series follows their adventures battling the evil Dr. Zork and his junk food minions! Through these journeys kids will learn about healthy foods and their positive attributes.
(Check out the first 4 pages on Bentobots.com)
Abilities: Within the world of Bentobots, we came up with the idea to depict food as Power-Ups, much like in a video game. Through these stories and future media, kids will learn to associate certain foods with different abilities -all based on nutritional facts and scientifically proven benefits! We hope that this will also encourage imaginative play and start the conversation about nutrition much earlier.
There are 3 Power-Ups currently: Agility, Brainpower, and Strength.
(For example: An Agility Power-Up would be foods that a runner would eat before a race or a workout: whole wheat breads, whole grain pastas, bananas, quinoa, etc.)
I hope that one day children will run into the kitchen while their parent is packing their lunch to remind them, "don't forget my power-ups!!"
Development / Prototyping
The final designs are complete and ready to go. We are currently in talks with a fantastic manufacturer in America for the lunchboxes. We have chosen a very skilled company overseas to manufacture our neoprene sleeves.
Concept Development: The initial design went through some major changes for production, and we are very happy with the final result! It was really fun establishing a design language for the characters.
Here is a page from my old portfolio:
Prototypes: Bentobots has come a long, long way!
September: Place tooling + sleeve sample construction + supplies orders
October: Tooling build + order sleeves
November: Production, part approval, quality assurance + validation
December: Continue production
January/February: Finalize the assembly and shipment process and begin fulfillment
We've gotten this far on our own, and now we need your help Kickstarter, to fight childhood obesity in a fun and positive way. The funds will go to mold / tooling costs and the additional products such as stickers and printing the comics.

Risks and challenges
We have worked very hard to iron out any possible issues by working closely with our manufacturers. With a project of this scale, problems may still come up despite months and months of planning. As always, we believe in 100% transparency, and will keep you updated along the way. Here are some risks we have in mind:
Manufacturing: While our designs are ready to go, our manufacturers may still need things tweaked here and there and possibly push back our production. Great communication with our companies will help speed up that process.
Fulfillment: Sometimes you just can't plan for everything. Shipments can get lost, broken, and manufacturers can run into issues as well. Before we launched, we started searching for back-up suppliers to minimize this risk -though it may still delay production, it will guarantee that you get your Bentobot!
High Demand Risk: We are confident that this product will receive a great response, but it may exceed our own expectations -this will require additional planning with our manufacturers and result in some delays. Rest assured we will keep you updated on our progress.
Our manufacturers have years and years of experience and through working with them and friends in the industry, we know we can deliver a quality product. Some shocks and surprises may occur along the journey but we are confident that we can overcome them.
Any pledge will help us get closer to reaching our goal: to help fight childhood obesity in a fun and creative way. Please help us bring Bentobots to reality by backing this project, or sharing the campaign.
We hope that you love the Bentobots as much as we do! Thanks!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
