The Dumbing of Age Book One Kickstarter was an amazing success, but folks have been bugging me for Book Two. Well, it's that time!
What is Dumbing of Age? It's a webcomic you can find on the Internet, and it's about freshman entering college. It stars Joyce, a fundamentalist Christian who was previously homeschooled, and her unlikely new friend Dorothy, an atheist who wants to be President. They're surrounded by a varied cast of fully-realized characters.
This book would collect "Year Two," spanning the six storylines that start on October 31, 2011 through November 9, 2012. This includes new commentary, behind-the-scenes artwork, and new character profiles into an 178-page tome with luxurious glossy paper all bound up into a sturdy presentation. Seriously, these books are gorgeous. Sometimes when we get solicitors I whip out a book to show them how pretty it is.
Also there will be a Foreword by Joel Watson. It will probably be very mean.
To print 1500 copies of this first book at just under $7 apiece, I'll need to raise approximately $10,000 to afford the printing costs. Add postage costs and taxes (oof) and the like, and that means I'll have to raise approximately $15,000 total. So that's the number on the board!
But let's make this interesting.
Everyone loves Dumbing of Age, right? It updates every weekday like clockwork, Monday through Friday. But... what if it updated Monday through SATURDAY? For a full year? Well, let me tell you how this could be possible:
We get the total pledge amount up $5k from $15, for a total of $20k. (I'm not just pocketing this cash. I'd need a new Cintiq to make this possible this coming year, as I draw my comic on my wife's computer by kicking her off it, and she's going to be much less kick-offable very soon. And, uh, a new desk to accommodate this super-large monitor thingy, since the one I have is kind of not equipped for it. And factoring in the increased postage costs for the higher number of books I'd have to ship to reach that pledge amount, etc...)
It's something to think about. I get to draw more comics, you get to read more comics.
UPDATE: Now that we've blown by some other stretch goals, there's also a chance to unlock Sunday updates for a year. See below.
And stretch goals beyond that? Well, maybe Roomies! Book 2 is on the table, but I'll talk about that once we get closer to funding.
UPDATE: OH HEY WE FUNDED
Here's the deal, going forward. Saturday updates unlock at $20k, but what are the stretch goals beyond that? Well, let's see.
$15K DOA BOOK 2 <--- funded
$20K SATURDAY UPDATES UNLOCKED <---funded, starting immediately
$27K ROOMIES! BOOK 2 in black and white <---funded
$32K ROOMIES! BOOK 2 with color Sundays <---funded
$42K SUNDAY UPDATES UNLOCKED <---funded
$52K I will show backers a complete, finished Dumbing of Age strip FROM THE FUTURE that will publish seven weeks from now. <--funded, can be viewed in members-only update post
$75k will for-reals draw a multi-page uncensored sexytimes scene involving a canon couple of my choosing, for backers only <-- definitely not happening at this rate, phew
THANK YOU FOR BELIEVING IN ME
Risks and challenges
There are indeed many risks and challenges in getting something like this together. I gotta get books produced and shipped from across the globe to me! And then I gotta mail hundreds of these books and their rewards to you! However, this ain't my first rodeo, not by a long shot, and so at the risk of jinxing this, I'm pretty confident this thing'll go not terribly. Hell, last year I got THREE TIMES as many pledges as I got the previous year, up to over 600 from about 200, and I still managed to get all that stuff out the door. Every year I find quicker and better ways to do what I do.
The only annoying thing really out of my control is when books get stuck in customs from the way over from the printers. That always sucks. (It's why I've added an extra month onto the "expected date" for the rewards.)
