I have been asked repeatedly these past few weeks, "When is the next Dumbing of Age Kickstarter? Is it now? Is it now? How about now?" The answer is YES.
IT IS NOW.
What is Dumbing of Age? It's a webcomic you can find on the Internet, and it's about freshmen entering college. It stars Joyce, a fundamentalist Christian who was previously homeschooled, and her unlikely new friend Dorothy, an atheist who wants to be President. They're surrounded by a varied cast of fully-realized characters, such as Billie, the alcoholic ex-cheerleader with a Resident Assistant problem(?), and Amber, the Internet shut-in who solves her rage issues by dressing up like a superhero and fighting crime.
This book would collect "Year Four," spanning the four storylines that start on October 4, 2013 and complete on September 21, 2014. This includes new commentary, behind-the-scenes artwork, and new character designs into an 196-page tome with luxurious glossy paper all bound up into a sturdy presentation. Seriously, these books are gorgeous. Sometimes when we get solicitors I whip out a book to show them how pretty it is.
Also there will be a foreword by T Campbell.
To print 2000 copies of this first book at just over $7 apiece, I'll need to raise approximately $14,000 to afford the printing costs. Add Kickstarter fees and taxes (oof) and the like, and that means I'll have to raise approximately $20,000 total. So that's the number on the board!
Two years ago I did stretch goals to unlock website updates for Saturday and Sunday. Some of you thought updating 365 days a year would destroy me. Well, it did not! IT ONLY MAKES ME STRONGER. And so let's keep that going. Stretch goals are in place to elongate those Saturday and Sunday updates for another year. Otherwise Saturday updates end on May 10 and Sunday updates end on May 30.
More about stretch goals: I've also included a pledge level where you can get a 3"x3.5" Amazi-Girl character magnet in addition to your book. This level is limited, so jump on one of those slots if you want an Amazi-Girl magnet!
So what does this have to do with stretch goals? Well, if we hit $40k, I will open up another pledge level where you can get a book and a magnet of a second character. At $45, I will open up another pledge level where you can get a book and a magnet of a third character. There will be, of course, a higher-tiered pledge level where you can get a book and magnets of all unlocked characters. Otherwise, you have to choose one magnet to come with your book.
At $50k, I will send Joyce character magnets to everybody who ordered snail-mailable goods. If you ordered any number of real made-of-paper books, you'll get a Joyce character magnet with your order! Sorry, folks who pledge only for the PDF, but there are not envelopes for PDFs in which to put magnets!
Who these additional magnets will be of I haven't yet decided. I might make the choices myself, or I may run a poll on the main dumbingofage.com website.
(The pledge level for all the magnets will go up once there's more than one magnet to collect.)
Let's list these stretch goals all list-like:

Last year while I was mailing out book 3s, I tweeted an image of our cat, Miss Sakaki, sitting inside a box of books. Immediately everyone was saying, dude, I would pay extra to have my book sat on by a cat. Amazingly, I remembered this a year later and have added a pledge tier with a handful of slots that guarantees your book has been sat on by my cat. Not, like, a lot of slots, obviously, because cats aren't terribly easy to wrangle, plus I don't know how stringent cat labor laws are. But that's also there. You know, if you want.
I'm thinking of including a certificate of authenticity of some sort for the cat-sitting thing, but I'd probably want to incorporate an image of Miss Sakaki sitting on a Book 4 somehow, and since Book 4s aren't produced yet, I guess showing you what it'd look like would have to wait a few months. D'oh well! Imagine something probably post-card-sized, y'know, so we can tuck it inside the book without shipping damage worry, or so you have a place to easily store it.
Returning again this year are the digital commission reward pledge levels! For $100, $150, and $300, you can get a digital commission piece of artwork of one, two, or two characters totally making out, respectively! Each is at least 6" long in some dimension, and will be sent to you in TIF and a smaller PNG form, the former of which you can get printed and framed if you like. Each one is unique, even if all of you ask for the same character! (I drew a lot of Dinas and Jacobs last year.)
MORE TO COME AS FUNDING PROGRESSES, PLEASE AND THANK YOU
The Dina character magnet preview level ($50) is unlocked! Above is an idea of what it'll look like. It'll be 3.5 inches tall, same as Amazi-Girl, but 1.5 inches wide, because Dina doesn't have a wide cape or anything. They'll be able to hang out on your fridge or metal cabinet or whatever, since they're in scale with each other.
There's also a COMPLETE MAGNET POWER pledge level ($100) now, which gets you one of each magnet this campaign unlocks. So far it's just the two, but I feel pretty confident there will be more. The pledge level's value will increase as more are unlocked!
The $30k funding level has been reached, both unlocking Sunday updates and I've decided also giving us a Walky character magnet pledge level. So that's there, plus the folks who pledged for all the magnets get another one in their pile. Walky'll be 4 inches tall and either 2 or 2.5 inches wide... I might crop off those wild shoelaces of his because they're narrowly keeping him from being 2 inches across! (as you can see by the blue line) We'll see.
At $35k, we unlock another magnet pledge level! I put a poll on dumbingofage.com and Sal won, so here she is. She'll be 2"x4". Go check out her new pledge level if you want her, and if you pledged at the tier to get all the magnets, she's been added to your pile.
$40k character magnet pledge tier unlocked, and it's Billie! You know the drill! Go pledge for her if you want her, or if you've pledged for the COMPLETE MAGNET POWER level, add her to your pile! You're gonna have a full refrigerator.
$45k! Ruth won the latest dumbingofage.com poll, so here she is! She's 2"x4.5", putting her at at general scale with Billie's magnet, and you have the choice of either pledging for just Ruth's magnet ($50) or for both their magnets together ($60)!
Next goalpost is $50k, where everyone who pledged for snail-mailable goods gets a Joyce magnet! That's gonna be a lotta magnets.
It happened! We reached $50k! That means everyone who pledged for a real book or books is gonna get a Joyce magnet thrown into your package for free! Hooray! So if you pledged for just a book, you get the book and a Joyce magnet; if you pledged for a book and a single magnet, you get that book, that specific magnet, and Joyce; and if you pledged for all of the magnets, Joyce has been added to your pile.
Hot dang! Thanks, everyone!
We've hit $55k, and so I've decided to give you Dorothy! She's got her own pledge level now, or you can pledge for both her and Walky! (with Joyce tagging along for free now that we're past $50k)
$60k!!! That means Carla's pledge level is unlocked! It also means a new Sal AND Carla magnet pledge level is unlocked! You can pick up just Carla or both of them. Or you can grab one of the handful of COMPLETE MAGNET POWER pledges remaining that'll get you every single character magnet. Just 50 hours to go as of this update!
Risks and challenges
There are indeed many by-now-familiar risks and challenges in getting something like this together. I gotta get books produced and shipped from across the globe to me! And then I gotta personally mail over a thousand of these books and their rewards to you! And every year the number of you who pledge increases in size. That's both good and intimidating! But I'm pretty sure I can do it. This is my fifth time! I am basically a machine at this by now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
