I have done the research, created hundreds of samples, and designed this collection with love and care. Like any good story, this has been through many drafts and now it’s time to develop the final product. This is where you come in! With your help I will be able to create a collection based on innovative light filled and light responsive textiles.
Pictured above are textiles I have developed during my research. I will be mixing traditional techniques like hand knitting and with innovative techniques like reflective printing, fiber optics, and laser cutting. By combining traditional materials and techniques with technology and innovation I will create my own version of a space age inspired bohemian wardrobe for the modern girl.
This project was chosen as a STAFF PICK. Thank you Kickstarter!
This Kickstarter Project was featured in an amazing article written by Senior Fashion Editor for the Huffington Post, Julee Wilson, about the difficulties of funding senior thesis and being a black woman in a creative field.
Thank you Julee and HuffPost!
The majority of my work can be viewed online at www.ayokeys.com.
At the moment I am working as a design intern for lemlem a lifestyle brand owned by super model Liya Kebede that is hand made in Ethiopia with traditional hand woven Ethiopian cotton textiles.
In addition to my three years as a Parson School of Design BFA student I have taken multiple sewing and construction courses at Moore College of Art and Design and produced and designed a ten piece fashion show while in high school.
FOLLOW THE MONEY
At first glance $10,000 may seem like a lot, but I’ve broken it down, and it’s just the perfect amount for me to finish the sample making process of my collection and complete the final garments and presentation.
I’ve factored in the 5% fee and payment processing fees (between 3%-5%) that go to this amazing platform once my project is successfully funded.
The remainder of the crowdfunded money will be used to purchase materials in order for me to create my textiles, purchase supplemental woven fabrics as needed, out source specialized knits and finishing, prepare the final presentation, and don’t forget the material involved in making the wonderful handcrafted incentives for you (my wonderful backers).
MATERIALS includes yarns (wrapped silk, merino, acrylic for wearable and unique light inspired knitwear), Fiber Optics (fiber optic panels, batteries, circuit building tools for safe application in garments), reflective fibers and paint, leathers, silicones, plastics, and bonding agents, screen and digital printing materials, zippers, buttons, various trims, as well as muslin and pattern paper for sample making.
OUTSOURCING includes the finishing of knits and garments by special technicians with tools and machines that I don’t have access to within my university studios.
FINAL PRESENTATION cost include photographer, photo studio, models, hair and makeup, and look book printing.
I’ve put together some amazing hand made rewards for your generous pledges. Everything from personalized thank you notes, to laser cut keychains, personalized accessories, and invitations for you and friends to a presentation of the Final Collection. The pledge rewards are in a column to the right. There is an additional cost of shipping for some items which you will see reflected in your cart as you checkout.

Risks and challenges
I know that timing will be a challenge when working with so many different materials and making functional garments. With this in mind, I have created a schedule to help me complete this collection by May with delays and due dates in mind.
I’ve also done an immense amount of research and created countless samples and am confident that the final pieces will become what I intended them to be. The huge potential result and message of my collection pushes me to accomplish the goal by any means necessary.
I will keep you, my backers, regularly updated with progress updates on a monthly basis so that you can see the process every step of the way.
This collection will be completed regardless of any challenges I face, however, the more support I receive the better the overall work will be for you and for me.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
