Burglars of Hamm is a writing and performing partnership that has been creating original comedies since 1998. There are four Burglars – Carolyn Almos, Matt Almos, Jon Beauregard and Albert Dayan. They have been called “Los Angeles’ goofiest social satirists” (LA Times), “The Talking Heads of LA theatre – arch, geeky, high-brow and hip” (LA Stage Magazine) and “Maybe the closest thing LA has to the Pythons.” (Backstage West)
"The Behavior of Broadus" was inspired by impossibly true events. Dr. John Broadus Watson was a megalomaniac and noted scientist, most famous for his "Little Albert" experiment, in which he conditioned a small baby to fear things he had previously loved: soft white things like mice, rabbits, and Santa Claus.
Obsessed with modifying and controlling human behavior, he was unable to control his own - he was fired from Johns Hopkins for conducting a torrid affair with a laboratory assistant. After leaving academia, he entered advertising and became a pioneer in the shift from ads extolling the virtues of a product to ads that suggested what might befall you if you didn’t buy it. From there, he went on to write the most popular and influential book on childcare in the United States (until it was replaced by Dr. Spock’s in the 50’s). It’s not an exaggeration to say that generations of Americans were raised based on John Broadus Watson’s belief that all human behavior and emotion is completely controllable. We are still living with the repercussions of Watson's life and work today.
In 2010, Burglars of Hamm received a commission from Center Theatre Group, the premier large theatre on the West Coast, to complete the play, which we had been working on as far back as 2003. During this process – including a week-long in-house workshop and later, a two-week workshop leading to two public readings at the Kirk Douglas Theatre – the show became a musical. Brendan Milburn of Milburn-Vigoda (‘Sleeping Beauty Wakes” and “Striking Twelve”) was brought on board to co-write music with Matt Almos.
In recent months we've assembled the remainder of our production team. We are thrilled with who we've landed - John Ballinger as Musical Director, Ann Closs-Farley as Costume Designer, Jason Thompson as Projection Designer, Brandon Baruch as Lighting Designer, Tifanie McQueen as Scenic Designer, and Ken Roht as Choreographer..
We are so excited to bring this piece to the stage. If you feel moved to be a part of it, we'd love to have you kickstart us!

Risks and challenges
This is the most ambitious project "Burglars of Hamm" has ever undertaken. The financial, creative and design demands of a full blown musical go well beyond any of our previous projects. We have engaged a music director, orchestrator, and a 5 piece band. Finding a design team and talent that will work within the constraints of the Los Angeles Equity waiver contract has been a difficult task but we have engaged award winning designers in lighting, costume, projections, and choreography. We have received a lot of help getting the piece this far but just need a little more to fully realize our vision. Burglars of Hamm has been writing original comedies since 1998 and have faced similar challenges before. We are confident in our ability to bring this world premiere musical to thrilling life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
