THE BOOK

Australia to Zimbabwe: A Rhyming Romp Around the World to 24 Countries takes readers on a whirlwind romp around the globe. This eye-popping children's A-Z book explores 24 countries through rhyming introductions to their culture, fascinating photos, and fun activities including crafts, recipes and games. Some sample activities are:

  • Carve like a Zimbabwean sculptor!
  • Play the Danish game of cooperative tag!
  • Make Turkish meatballs, French Quiche or Chinese Dumplings!
  • Learn how to read Cyrillic!
  • Write "Love" in Amharic!
  • Make a boomerang!

  • The book also includes recommendations for music and movies for each country that can be found on its website as well as books that can be found at most local libraries.

Contributions from embassies, natives and photographers from around the globe bring an authentic flavor to this groundbreaking geography book, enabling readers to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of each country. Also great for parents, teachers, and librarians, this 336-page treasure trove offers an abundance of ideas for international festivals, creative programs, and rainy days.

You can read more about the book on its website: www.australiatozimbabwe.com/ which also features music and videos from every country.

OUR KICKSTARTER GOAL

After almost 8 years of work on this labor of love, the book is complete and will be coming out on November 17th!  It has been printed as a beautiful, full-color, 336-page hardback book (financed by cleaning out the author's bank account), and it will be distributed in the US and Canada. Now all it needs is a marketing campaign so that parents, schools and kids can discover it! (Because sadly, books can't sell themselves if no one knows about them.) The goal of this kickstarter is to raise awareness of the book and to raise money to market the book to educators, libraries and buyers of children's books everywhere.

Your support will help get Australia to Zimbabwe into the hands of kids across the nation, and we'll send you a copy of the book in return!

You can also help by giving Australia to Zimbabwe to people who you think will enjoy it (particularly your favorite kids and teachers) and by sharing this book and campaign with others.  It's not just for kids and educators! Just look at what one of our early reviewers said about the book:

Australia to Zimbabwe is an outstanding way to learn so many things. An inexhaustible treasure house!” -John Sontag, Harvard PhD, Russian History

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Through a mixture of divine providence and Turkish magic, the Alabama-bred Ruth Fitts landed her first job out of college selling carpets in Istanbul, Turkey. Her boss said it was his worst month of business ever! Her failure in carpet sales led her to become an elementary school teacher in Istanbul. From there, she became an educator and avid traveler, touring 35 countries and living in two of them.

Before starting this project, Ruth was the Director of Meridian International Center’s International Classroom, a geography education program with the mission to “bring the world into Washington, DC Public Schools.” She trained international diplomats and scholars to create exciting introductions to their home country for elementary students. She gave teachers workshops on globalizing their curricula and created “country culture boxes” with hands-on materials for use in the classroom. She co-founded an International Children’s Festival involving 16 embassies.

Ruth became passionate about international education during her travels. Arriving in Yemen just days after 9/11, riding a cattle truck for days through the Rift Valley in Africa, and discovering the big cities of South America, she encountered a world more wide and welcoming than she had ever imagined growing up in the US. To her surprise, she found that none of her classes in International Relations had prepared her well. Her studies had looked at the world as a group of problems to be solved, not as peoples and places to get to know and relate to. This realization gave her a passion for international education that focuses on more than geographical features and problems around the globe.

Ruth worked with embassies, scholars and people around the world to create and edit this book. From embassies that made sure their country was accurately represented, to natives who made musical suggestions and cultural corrections, each chapter was created with input from a multitude of volunteers.

LOVE THE WORLD BOOKS

Ruth started Love The World Books because she believes that geography education should inspire kids to feel both fascinated by the world and at home in it. It should make them eager to know our international neighbors and to learn from their cultures. She wants to give kids a world that is no longer foreign, but filled with a wonderfully diverse human family. She wants to gift them the world that she loves. Australia to Zimbabwe is the first book from this new independent publisher.

Risks and challenges

The main risk is that this book will remain in storage with the world unaware that it even exists. This could be particularly devastating to the author, who has spent her savings on getting it printed, and whose apartment floor-space is currently devoted to book storage.

The challenge is to spread the word as far as possible so that more children can be empowered to become global citizens. Once people know about the book, she'll have to order another printing!
