About

     In the video link above I have an existing BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) style of metal detector that I sell on eBay.  I would like to improve this design and make a kit that is more friendly and less hassle to tune.

     As you might be aware, almost every kind of DIY (Do It Yourself) metal detector out there is based on a simple BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) design using two coils or a coil and an oscillator where tuning of the coils or oscillator is manual and tedious. (See attached video)  I want to take that a step further by implementing a PLL (Phase Locked Loop) design approach that would be capable of dynamically auto tracking the coil frequency.  This eliminates the need to tune a separate coil or oscillator and allows you to only use one detection coil in the design.  Simplifying the design down to a single coil also means you can change the operating frequency by changing the LC( Coil Capacitor) tank values ... in other words simply changing the detector coil out for another detector coil.  It is well known that different frequencies determine the depth and the type of metal you are looking for, so this design would lend itself for further design possibilities.

Risks and challenges

I have several years of experience with coil sensors and different design techniques. Moving to a PLL design from a BFO is a natural progression in the right direction in my opinion. Unless there is some life altering event, I will do my best to make sure the Educational DIY Metal Detector kits are completed and delivered in a timely fashion.
