Stake Saver was dreamed up after completing a 40-mile trip in the Grand Tetons. As a group of guys hiking with various brands of equipment, we had all suffered from damaged stakes. Most of our stake issues stemmed from the neck of the stake bending while being driven into the ground. By the end of our fourth night on the trail, our group had damaged over half of all stakes. With our stakes averaging between $1.50 and $3.00 each we estimated roughly $30 in damaged stakes.
Stake Saver was designed to slide on and fit snugly onto the driving end of the stake. When force is applied to Stake Saver, it directs the force axially and helps to eliminate any lateral force from the stake not being hit squarely.
This helps to eliminate the stake from kinking or bending while not being struck optimally.
Stake Saver's exterior is designed from 6061-T6 Aluminum which is Anodized Red. The exterior shell of Stake Saver takes the brunt of the force as it transmits the impact force into the stake. The interior is formed from a thermoplastic which essentially cups the stake and prevents the stake from moving when being struck. These two materials allow stake saver to come in with a mass of 21g ±2 grams. We settled on this design as it keeps the weight in check and performs exceptionally well. Most stakes on the market average around 15 grams so Stake Saver is definitely worth its weight.
Initially Stake Saver was designed to work with other brand stakes. As we were testing other brands stakes, we still weren't entirely pleased with the materials some of these manufacturers used. This led us to design our own stake and use materials that actually get the job done. We plan to bring Stake Saver to market along with our own BCH gear's Wolverine stakes. These stakes were developed to work optimally with Stake Saver and also come with a stake bag. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee stake saver to work with other brands as some stake manufactured dimensions or tolerances vary from batch to batch. Stake Saver may fit other existing stake brands that have similar dimensions.
Wolverines stakes are made with high quality 7001 aluminum with a T6 temper. What does this mean to you as a consumer. Aluminum in 7001-T6 has an ultimate tensile strength of 97,900 psi and a yield tensile strength of 90,600 psi. Compared to 6061-T6 which has an ultimate tensile strength of 45,000 psi and a yield tensile strength of 40,000 psi. This means to you as a customer that our stake is designed to handle more than 2x the stress of a comparable stake composed in 6061-T6
Don't be fooled by other vendors saying 7075-T6 aluminum is stronger. This is not factual at all and they are misleading you. While 7075-T6 aluminum is strong, it still is weaker than 7001-T6. Manufacturers like 7075-T6 because it is cheaper to manufacturer do to faster extrusion rates, injection costs, and cheaper material cost. Aluminum in 7075-T6 has an ultimate tensile strength of 83,000 psi and yield tensile strength of 73,000 psi. This clearly shows 7001-T6 has an +18% ultimate tensile strength improvement and a +24% improvement in yield tensile strength. All source material used is provided below.

Risks and challenges
This project will come to fruition. With your help, it allows me to push the product out this fall instead of early spring which is my ultimate goal. I already have materials sourced and have a deposit placed on a block of CNC machine time. This campaign allows me to determine the demand for my product and help me bring the product to market sooner
When creating prototypes and small batches of parts, the machining costs are prohibitively high. With you helping to back this Kickstarter project, it allows me to reach higher volumes and hit the price point we need to bring the product to market. Otherwise, I'd need to wait until next spring and run a large batch of product to drive the costs down.
