 We're FUNDED!!!

Thank you to all of our Acolytes for making this a reality! Now let's get cracking on those Stretch Goals!

Typical set up. (using pre-art play test cards, tokens, markers and d6 are placeholders.)

Arkham Relic Hunt is a competitive card game employing item collection and gotcha mechanics set in H.P. Lovecraft's Arkham, Massachusetts. Players take on the role of a Cult Acolyte who has been tasked with going into Arkham to collect Relics for their order. All of these Relics are worth a varying amount of points. The Acolyte with the most points at the end of the game wins!

Arkham Relic Hunt includes Magic with which players can use to help themselves achieve their goals, or sabotage the other Acolytes' actions.

Arkham Relic Hunt is a game for 2-4 players; games average about 45-60 minutes in length. Good for all humans and ancient alien gods ages 14+.

Game play overview:

Goal: To be the Acolyte at the end of the game with the highest score.

Required to play:

  • A copy of Arkham Relic Hunt.
  • 6 or so Tokens to use as markers for various card abilities.
  • 2-4 minis, or something different than the Tokens, depending on player count, to use as an Acolyte to move throughout Arkham.
  • (Optional) 1d6 used in attempts to Steal from another player.

Cards: There are three basic types of cards in Arkham Relic Hunt:

Locations- There are 12 locations in the game that players can travel to. These are laid out in a grid to make up Arkham.

Magic (Purple backs)- These come in two subcategories. Magic cards make up a player's hand and can be used help yourself, or sabotage other players:

  •        Rituals - which are played only on the active players turn.
  •        Spells - which can be played at any time (sometimes called 'Instants").

Relics (Bronze backs)- These come in two subcategories and are the items players discover and collect within Arkham. Each Relic is worth a varying amount of points and many Relics have special abilities:

  •  Artifacts - Collected from numerous HP Lovecraft stories, Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu role-playing game, and even a few unique to Arkham Relic Hunt.
  •  Cultists - Every Cult needs new members now and again. The player with the most Cultist cards at the end of the game will be crowned 'A True Cult Leader"!

Set Up: At the beginning of each game, the Location cards are laid out in a grid of 3 rows, with 4 locations in each row. All Relics are then shuffled together and distributed, face down, to 11 of the locations. The Arkham Dump Location does not start with any cards on it. All of the Magic cards are shuffled together and 5 cards are dealt to each player.

Standard layout of the Location cards, with Relics, ready to go.

Play begins with the player who has the next birthday and continues to their left (Clockwise).

Turn Summary:  Turns take place over a series of Phases. Following these phases is paramount as certain cards and abilities can be used only during certain phases.

  •  Phase 1: Move Acolyte -  Player must move their Acolyte to a Location containing at least one Relic, and they cannot stay at the same Location from their previous turn.
Acolytes must move to a different Location each turn, and Acolytes can be at the same Location at the same time.
  •  Phase 2: Discover Relics - Player flips a Hidden (face down) Relic to Discovered (face up). They do this with up to two adjoining hidden Relics
Two Discovered Relics, the first at the Location of the Red Acolyte, and the second, adjoining, right behind the Acolyte.
  •  Phase 3: Play Magic cards / Use Magic & Relic Abilities -  Players can play any number of Magic cards from their hand, but they must announce if they are not playing any.
Here, the player has a full hand of five cards and will be playing Train Ticket and then The Music of Erich Zann.
  •  Phase 4: Collect Relic - In this phase, the player collects one Discovered Relic from Arkham to add to their Reliquary (the area of space in front of each player).
This Reliquary has Relics, a Location, and Magic cards to deal with.
  •  Phase 5: Discard and then Draw Magic cards -  The player can choose to discard any number of Magic cards from their hand, or they choose to not discard. The player then draws back up to their hand size (5 by default).
  •  Phase 6:End of Turn - Play moves to the player's left.

Ending the Game: Play continues until one player, during Phase 5: Discard and then Draw Magic cards, is unable to fill their hand back up to their hand size limit from the Magic draw pile. This triggers the end of the game. All players get one more round to do whatever they can to try to win. Once the player who could not fill their hands ends their final turn,  the game ends.

Declaring a Winner: Each player reviews the cards in their Reliquary to tally up their score. The player with the highest score is the winner! ALL HAIL!

This player has a total score of 40 points, that's one mighty score! But, how was this calculated? There's one sure fire way to find out...

But this isn't all there is to Arkham Relic Hunt! There are rules for Stealing from other players, ways to increase your final score even after the game has ended, and hidden throughout the game are Easter Eggs referencing Lovecraft, the Mythos, and more!

If you wish, you can read a working copy of the full rules here.

------------------What Acolytes are saying about Arkham Relic Hunt------------------

" Finally! The Arkham Horror Replacement that I've been looking for!" ~ Chris Fisher (Kublacon Attendee)

"Arkham Relic Hunt is one of those games that comes along once in a while that just ruins other games, and easily places itself on that list of games you play to subtly destroy your friends in the guise of pure fun." ~ Brian Murphy (Professor at Miskatonic University Podcast)

SPECIAL STRETCH GOALS!

If we can reach 200 backers at the Cultist level and above, we will send one "Map of Arkham" Relic card to all Backers at the Cultist level or higher. Let's get out there and spread the word! We want to get these exclusive cards into your hands.

We will swap out the map for an original drawing, if we reach this goal...

Where are we with the games progress? Glad you asked.

  • The game itself is fully written and play-tested.
  • The cards and rules are laid out.
  • The d6, punch outs, and poster are laid out.
  • Printers for everything have been lined up.

What's left?

  • The card art is moving along.
  • The game box is going through revisions.

With your help the Hunt for Relics in Arkham can begin!

The answer is simple, really; there's no way we can afford to bring this game to life, and get it into people's hands, unless we raise the money. The goal of $10,000 is the bare minimum for getting the game professionally printed, with a tuck box, rules, and shrink-wrapping, plus shipping costs. The more we raise, the more copies and features we can produce!

Damon "Magus Artifex" Gregory - Game Design/Layout/Cult Leader:

Damon has been playing RPGs, board, dice, card, and video games for almost four decades. However, it hasn't been until the last few years that he decided to step into the design arena. He has a two RPGs in the works, one a Sci-Fi Western set in the old west, and the second is a Mythos-based game for kids. He also writes his own scenarios that he takes to conventions. Arkham Relic Hunt is Damon's first game going into production (with your support).

Badger McInnes – Editor/Cult Leader:

Badger is founder and President of Squamous Studios. He's been working as a book designer and layout artist for over fifteen years for such publishers as Chaosium, Pagan Publishing, Miskatonic River Press, Legendary Games, and Golden Goblin Press. Jason McKittrick - Sculpture Artist:

We have the distinct pleasure of working with Jason McKittrick of Cryptocurium, who has lent his considerable artistic madness to creating the Acolyte miniatures.

Risks and challenges

The main challenge right now is getting the rest of the card artwork for the game done in a timely fashion. Of course, there is always the chance of unforeseen problems, such as with printing and shipping. We are working with established companies to produce the game, like Panda Game Manufactures, which should help to minimize problems.
