Hello Kickstarters -
We are a husband and wife team located in Wellesley, MA. As parents to two young girls (6 and 2 years old), we are constantly looking for new activity and project kits that will spark our girls' imagination and get their creativity going. The idea behind Kids GALLERY began when our 6-year old "recreated" an artwork she saw after a visit to an art museum. This made us think: What if we could introduce her to the wonderful world of fine visual arts through the format of an activity kit?
Fine visual art is often perceived as too complicated to understand and somewhat unapproachable to children. Well, it shouldn't be... Studies show that exposing children to art and artworks at a young age is important in developing creative and critical thinking.
Art teaches children to make GOOD JUDGMENTS - there is no right or wrong answer in art, there are no rules. There are many ways to see, feel and interpert.
Art fosters creativity and imagination, skills necessary for SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL development.
Working with our product advisor, a PhD in Art Education and a thought leader on the importance of art in the education of children, we created and developed our concept and activities. Our daughter and her friends were great guinea-pigs - you have no idea how many great ideas 6-year olds have (wow, our future is in great hands).
At Kids GALLERY our mission is to introduce children to well-known artists and their works, while developing their imagination and creativity. Each of our kits is inspired by a well-known artist and his/her masterpiece. By exploring, experimenting, and recreating the art, children will familiarize themselves with the artist, the masterpiece, and different styles of art, learning to appreciate the fine visual arts, while developing their own skills and creativity.
KIDS GALLERY ACTIVITY KITS
Each kit includes a masterpiece print, activity sheets, the necessary art supplies, and a short introductory biography about the artist and his/her works. Inspired by the masterpiece, children will learn, experiment, and recreate their own artwork, to then be displayed alongside the original in a designed double-frame provided, giving respect to the “young artist” and to the original piece.
In Edgar Degas' "Ballerinas", we focus on two of the artists famous artworks; In "Dance Class at the Opera" children will create their own "dance class" by using different background scenes and stickers, or recreate Degas' famous painting. In "Dancer Tilting", children will use crayons and/or colorful tissue paper to create the dancer's dress.
In Henri Rousseau's "Jungle", we focus on his famous artwork, "The monkeys in the Jungle". To create his jungle paintings, Rousseau used his imagination; in this kit, children will use their creativity and imagination to create their own "jungle". Another activity in the kit will focus on giving "depth" to the famous artpiece by creating their own pop-up card.
We also offer classroom kits which include a large original print, and activities for 10 or 20 students.
Remember we only get funded if we reach our campaign goal, so now is a great time to order kits and spread the word.
We are currently working on two artist-inspired kits: Edgar Degas and Henri Rousseau; additional kits are in the pipeline - if successful, we aim in developing a new artist inspired kit every 3-4 months. In order to complete the manufacturing process, WE NEED YOUR HELP. To keep costs down, we need to manufacture in large quantities: $6,000 will help us in manufacturing one of our kits, to manufacture a collection of kits based on different artists and artworks we need at least $24,000. Help us bring the Kids GALLERY collection to every child and every home.
Currently, because of copyrights, our kits are inspired by artists in the public domain (i.e. artists that passed away at least 70 years ago). With future kits we plan on working directly with young local artist making art even more approachable by using artwork that reflects contemporary culture and life. If you are an artist (or know someone who is), we'd love to hear from you, and perhaps you can be our next kit :).
Risks and challenges
We are currently working with the best printers and manufacturers here in the USA; production delays do happen (although we don't anticipate), but if they will occur, you'll all be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
