Hi! I'm Emily Barnes and I am a singer songwriter.
For those of you that know me, I started writing songs in my bedroom about 9 years ago and from that moment forward began pursuing a career as a full time songwriter and performer.
All of these years later, I have two full length home recordings under my belt and have been able to share my songs and stories with strangers, and not so strangers all across the country, and got to experience the world through the windows of a car, a tent, a van, hotel rooms, cafe windows, small stages, big festivals, and couches of now like family friends. It has been a journey I can't even begin to describe up until this point, and everyone I have met and shared a cup of coffee or a song with has greatly impacted my life.
The past few years I have been on a never ending search for something that felt like "home" from the road and I landed in Colorado. New to town, and not sure of what came next in my sudden move out west, I shifted all of my focus on the one thing that has always made me feel connected and whole; Songs. I wrote down the most honest moments from these incredible years of traveling and compiled a batch of songs that I fall in love with over and over again everyday. They're honest, they're about human connection, falling in love, about taking it slow, and realizing you're where you're meant to be.
I have never recorded an album in a studio, with full production, and musicians who learn MY songs, and a sound engineer and all of the bells and whistles, but I knew these songs were different, and I wanted you to be able to hear them as I felt them, and heard them in my head. I flew down to Denton, TX, Andrew Delaney signed on to produce the record, and we recorded the bulk of the album in three days with Michael Briggs of Civil Audio Engineering. We had a killer lineup of Texas musicians come into the studio and work these songs out (Falcon Valdez, Scott Davis, Bronwyn Higgins, Madeline Herdeman ) and we made this sound even better than I could have ever dreamed of.
Now to talk about what you signing on to be a part of this project means...I am sure you're wondering why after finishing the musical end I am launching a Kickstarter. Here's the real breakdown: Making the songs is the easiest part. Getting them out there so you can hear them? Not so much. There's still a whole bunch of other loose ends to tie up before I can release "Rare Birds". First, I have the pay the talented folks who made this record come to be. Then there's this big old things called PR. This is probably the most important part. This is the part where you get songs played on radio stations, and get really cool music blogs that you read to want to write a piece on YOUR SONGS, you get people to know you're coming to their town to play these songs live. It's not as easy anymore to do these things, so there's a team of folks who make that happen. There's physical merchandise (t-shirts, CD's, Vinyl) so you can have a copy of the art to add to your collection. There's art work! The designs come from another small artist like myself who provide me with cool logos that go on your merchandise and tie the whole theme together. Then there's little expenses, the final touches, last minute changes and all of those things add up to way more than you have in "my next album" fund. So that's where all of this is going . And HEY! If we raise more than 10,000 dollars we can even make a music video together!
Writing these songs, recording them, mixing them, and mastering them was only just the beginning. Without all of your support throughout the years in encouraging my music, connecting in a way that brings us all together, I wouldn't be here doing what I love and getting to share it.It only feels right to release "Rare Birds" with this community that has been my foundation for the past 9 years. I really believe in this album, in these songs, and in the community that this career has created. I am SO grateful to each and every one of you, and I can't wait for you to be a part of making "Rare Birds" soar.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart
Risks and challenges
Making records is always a unique challenge, but thankfully we've already gotten through the hard stuff. The record is tracked and mixed and mastered.
We're hoping to do some interesting stuff with the package... colored vinyl and the like, so we hope we find a source that'll do exactly what we want. All those art choices haven't been made yet, though, so we'll know everything a little more clearly a little later in the process. Same with the t-shirts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
