About this project
In June 2011, we put on what was essentially a workshop production of this new musical. Despite it being unfinished, underfunded, and severely restricted by a shabby space, it ran for 4 months (instead of 4 weeks) to sold out houses and critical acclaim. Our little project went on to win Best Musical at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, and the coveted Ovation Award for Best Original Music and Lyrics.
Now we're ready to give The Trouble with Words a fully realized production in a properly equipped venue with a beautiful set and costumes. Our goal is for this production to help us find producers and backers who can give the musical a commercial run.
We've invested a lot of money into this project, but to do it right we need to raise another 20,000.00. Even before raising this money, we've got commitments from an impressive group of award-winning designers who believe in the project.
The Trouble with Words has been a very special project. We want you to be a part of it GOING BIG.
Risks and challenges
Producing a musical is always risky, and this one was especially challenging when we first put it up. Not only was it expensive, it was also completely unknown to audiences. We believed in the project, though, so we went all in. We were rewarded with a wildly successful production.
Now, we are setting our sites higher. A challenge we will face is convincing people who've already seen the show to come back. We have a lot more seats in our beautiful new theatre and we will be counting on returning patrons as well as new ones to fill them. So we're giving them a brand new production. Greg has written several new songs that strengthen the show's theme of people struggling to connect. Our entire production design is brand new and much improved, and we've added innovative, award-winning professionals to our creative team.
We've also grown as a company since we first produced Greg's show. Coeurage has earned a reputation as one of Los Angeles' most promising companies by producing bold and well executed theatre throughout our first three years. The quality of our work continues to improve, and last year was our most successful both creatively and financially. Our volunteer staff boasts a collection of young, motivated artists who are ready to produce theatre on a larger scale.
