Finetown township, Johannesburg .... a piece of carpet in the dust, sound of drumming , a procession of kids in mismatched ‘costumes’ smeared in black facepaint. At the front, a young man in a red shirt and black bowtie. As a mesmerising mix of devastating tragedy and joyous celebration unfolds, he watches with a huge grin.
The young man in the bow-tie is LUCKY NDLOVU, an hugely passionate and enigmatic character, as comfortable speaking 'cut-glass' English as Afrikaans or Zulu, infectious in his joy, defiant about the perceived (and very real) limitations he faces on a daily basis. A lifetime resident of Finetown, at the age of 11 he set up kids drama group R.E.L.A.Y. (Real Entertainment Lived by Artist Youth). His aims were to open them up to more positive life options than the ones they were surrounded by and to reveal the inner spark he believes is inside everyone. Meeting Lucky when I was running filmmaking workshops in Finetown, with the charity C.A.S.T. (The Creative Arts Schools Trust http://creativeartstrust.org/home/about/), I found him absolutely fascinating, someone with limitless energy, drive, faith, conviction and who, despite the adversity he faces on a daily basis, sees himself as a lucky person. This film wonders just HOW LUCKY?
With initial funding, myself and cameraman Lex Beckett shot with Lucky last April in both Finetown and Soweto. We need to go back in a couple of weeks to finish filming and document what has happened to him over the course of the last year. Although I have got some funding, it is not quite enough. I need £1200 to cover the costs of us getting/ staying there. All the money is going towards costs, not pay and should I make anymore than my target amount, it will go towards the post production costs.
I sit here feeling hopeful and just possibly lucky?? http://www.freyabillingtonfilm.com/how-lucky.html
Risks and challenges
In honesty, I am a single parent, run a very successful Film Production course (University of Gloucestershire), work with C.A.S.T. and make films on top ..... so every day has an element of 'challenge'!!
The challenges making HOW LUCKY? basically come down to lack of time and money. I guarantee the film will be finished but possibly not on the timescale I am currently aiming for which is April 2015Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
