Leonardo | The Game of Art and Death | Plague Edition

Here's our final prototype set up for four players. The game is designed for 2 to 6 players.

Leonardo is suitable for ages 12 to 122, which just so happens to be the age of the oldest documented human!

The game lasts 90-120 minutes, depending on the number of players.

We designed Leonardo with two specific goals in mind :

One, to have a fantastic and fun-filled gameplay experience, one that grows in enjoyment with each encounter, a balanced blend of luck and skill.

Two, to be an absolute delight to the hand and eye, and true to the Mind and Spirit of Leonardo.

Here's what you can expect when you open your Leonardo | The Game of Art and Death | Plague Edition!

Leonardo | Death

The haunting figure of Death is inspired by Leonardo's rendering of a skull, an anatomically accurate drawing in pen and ink from The Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace. Leonardo was a keen observer of the human condition, both inside and out. No one in history has rendered the human body with greater skill and artistry.

Purposefully, Death is modeled a little larger than the other figures... this amplifies it's importance to the game. Cast in solid metal, like all Leonardo figures, it has a weight and presence fitting it's deadly character.

Leonardo | Leonardo and the Mona Lisa

The enigmatic pair. The smile that stretches across the centuries. The Artist and his Muse.

For just a moment, imagine yourself in Leonardo's studio in Firenze as he painted Lisa Gherardini in 1503. Did he realize then that the unworldly beauty that he was creating would last forever? Is that what her smile signifies?

It must be so, as Leonardo personally carried this precious painting to Château de Cloux in France, where he was the guest of good King Francis, in those final years until Death found him.

Leonardo | The Horse

The Duke of Milano, Ludovico il Moro, commissioned The Horse from Leonardo in 1482. He worked for years on it, producing a clay model, which was regrettably destroyed by French soldiers when they invaded Milano in 1499. It was to be the largest equestrian statue in the world.

More than five centuries later, you can now hold Leonardo's masterpiece in your hand!

Leonardo | The Tank and The Mortar

As an inventor, Leonardo developed Machines of War for his powerful patrons the Medici and the Sforza families. His weaponry was centuries ahead of it's time, The Tank in particular was a marvel of imagination and technological skill.

So... which will you choose, The Tank or The Mortar? Will either help you in your battle with Death?

Leonardo | The Rhombus

Welcome the Rhombicuboctahedron, a metaphysical gem of geometrical perfection. Fine yet powerful, it's the ultimate expression of Space and Time. A mathematical miracle in the palm of your hand.

Leonardo designed this treasure for his friend Luca Pacioli, as an illustration for his book The Divine Proportion, published in 1509.

Leonardo | Florins

In the Italy of Leonardo's time, there were no banknotes. So we took this opportunity to invent our own!

As you can see, Leonardo Florins, are two-sided, full color banknotes, in five denominations for your monetary pleasure. Notaphilists will be especially pleased with all the rich Florentine detail.

Please do not try to spend your Leonardo currency at your local store!

Leonardo | The Warrior Coin

This exquisite coin is based on The Bust of a Warrior in Profile, in The British Museum, a work expertly done by Leonardo in silverpoint, a favorite medium of Renaissance artists.

The ƒ2000 antiqued gold colored coin is crafted in a special alloy to ultra-precise tolerances. It's two inches (5 cm.) in diameter and has a wonderfully solid heft and weight to it.

Leonardo | The Die

One twelve-sided die. Black as the darkest Night with glittering Gold highlights. The Rhombi's evil twin. Your fate in your hand. One roll can overcome Death, or lead you to his dark door.

We think it appropriate that the singular of "Dice" is "Die". Art and Death... your worldly fortunes... all depending... on the roll of a Die!

Leonardo | Art Cards

All the variety if the great Master's work is represented with this bevy of unique double-sided full color Art Cards.

Seize the opportunity to collect Leonardo's greatest works, including masterful paintings, illuminating drawings, and brilliant technological inventions.

We included a set of special Art Cards depicting his most mysterious Lost Works, patiently waiting for you to discover them during your perilous journey!

Leonardo | Art Card | Details

Each Art Card displays all the important information you need when purchasing from The Purse and when collecting Florins from your hapless opponents! Studying and examining all the beautiful work of Leonardo is one of the great joys of experiencing the game.

If your skill is legendary, and Lady Luck is on your side, you could be the first collector in the world to own all the Leonardo Masterpieces!

Leonardo | Property Cards

As you journey through Leonardo, there are four types of properties you can own : Palaces, Churches, Universities, and Services. The management of your valuable hard won property will figure greatly in your success, and a cleverly timed trade or astute purchase could prove the difference between glorious victory or disastrous defeat.

Leonardo | Property Card | Details

The Property Cards display all the essential information to help you in buying, selling and collecting fees from your opponents. All Property Cards are color coded to match the Game Board to assist you in quickly surveying your growing domain.

Owning a group of connected properties can wreak havoc on your enemies, but beware of over-extending yourself too early in the game!

Leonardo | Fortune Card

Landing on a Fortune field can change your fate in an instant. With the varied assortment of Fortune Cards in the stack, any card you draw could send you flying around the board, land you in The Dungeon, or bring the spectre of Death onto the field of play!

Each card features a relevant drawing from our extensive research collection of the work of Leonardo.

Leonardo | Game Board

Leonardo's life was spent mostly in the four great Italian cities of Firenze, Roma, Milano, and Venezia. As you journey in his footsteps, take note of the rich historical tapestry woven into the fabric of the Game Board.

Leonardo | The Box

Simple. Elegant. Refined. Here we state our case

This is a box that is more than just a means of storage, but a statement of Leonardo's famous maxim...

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

We designed Leonardo | The Game of Art and Death | Plague Edition to be as intuitive as possible. Tabletop game enthusiasts will quickly find their way and understand the basic rules.

We worked with a large group of game testers, from the very first conceptual work through to the final prototype. Listening to their kudos, comments, and criticisms proved invaluable to our development work. Every game session revealed new insights and improvements.

With their help, we believe that we now have a solid gameplay experience, a game you will want to play again and again.

Leonardo | Start at Vinci

All players start from this corner of the Game Board, which was Leonardo's birthplace. Each time a player passes Vinci, they receive ƒ500 from the Purse, but if they land directly on Vinci, they get ƒ1000.

Leonardo | Property Cards

When you land on a field you may buy that Property. If you do not wish to buy it, the other players can place bids starting at the listing price from The Purse. The Property then goes to the highest bidder.

The only time you can sell or propose a trade to your opponents is when it is your turn and before you roll the Die.

If you are low on Florins, you can sell your cards back to The Purse at half the purchase price.

When you land on your own Property, you may buy one Art Card of your choice.

Leonardo | Art Cards

The Art Cards represent your wealth and power. They are bought and sold from The Purse. You earn higher fees from your opponents when they land on your Properties and you have an Art collection!

You can buy Art Cards in a number of ways. First, by landing on Leo's Studio, secondly, by landing on the Market Place, or third, by the directions of a Fortune Card. You can also acquire them by trading.

Art Cards can be returned to The Purse for the stated selling price on the card.

Leonardo | Death

If a player lands on the Death corner they become Death. Switch figures!

When Death lands on any Property except a Church, the tables are turned and you pay him! When Death lands on a Church - he has to pay double the fee.

When Death lands on the Country House, Death pays ƒ300 to the Poor House. If a player lands on the Country House, thereby escaping The Plague, Death pays that player ƒ300.

If Death lands on your figure, you catch The Plague - and pay ƒ400 to Death to spare your life. When you land on the Death figure - you become Death

Leonardo | The Purse

This corner contains the precious ƒ2000 Warrior Coin. When you land on here you have two options:

1. You cash in the ƒ2000 at The Purse - and return the Warrior Coin to The Purse corner.

2. You keep the Warrior Coin and receive ƒ200 from all player-to-player transactions between your opponents.

You lose the Warrior Coin when another player lands on The Purse, or if you land on any of the other corner fields, or you land in the Dungeon. If you land on another player, or vice versa, you both roll the Die - high roller wins the Warrior Coin.

Leonardo | Poor House

When you land on Poor House corner you receive all the Poor House money, which hopefully for you is a big pile of beautiful Florins!

Here are all the other fields on the Game Board.

From the initial idea, to the final game, we have shared this path together, as designers, artists and most importantly as father and daughter! For both of us it's been the most wonderful experience, to work together everyday on this amazing project, the roots of which go back 20 years or more.

Below are just a few insights into how we brought Leonardo to life.

Here we are in our studio at Meisterwerke Altstadt, discussing the Rhombicuboctahedron, which of course, neither of us can pronounce!

This was the first game figure we created for Leonardo, and was proof that the process we had designed would work all the way from initial concept through to final production.

Leonardo | Prototyping a game figure

Each figure begins life in research, where we find out everything we can about it's provenance. After choosing a Leonardo original design we then get it properly modeled in 3D at a very high quality.

We then send the tested and checked 3D model to one of two high-end 3D print companies, and they return the finished prototype, first in an ultra-high resolution plastic, and later, when everything checks out, in a special metal alloy.

In our never ending quest for quality, all specifications, designs and materials are subject to constant improvement! Overall benefits always trump individual features, everything in the end must enhance the original design brief.

Check back here often, as we will be adding a variety of exclusive Leonardo Editions collectibles as the campaign progresses.
