Why Hello, hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by.
We are The East Cackalacky Ascetic Marching Death Band - musicians, street entertainers, performance artists, a folk duo, writers, photographers, videographers and documentarians of the busking life.
With all our talents we bring you: East Cackalacky's Guide to Busking the World.
We’re creating both an East Cackalacky Guide to Busking the World and a CD of travel-inspired original music by the end of 2013!
But first we'll be BUSKING AROUND THE WORLD so we can bring you a first person account of what it's like.
We leave from NYC on April 15th, 2013 and fly to Europe. From there we will overland travel to Asia, stopping in a new city every couple of days to busk and get the local flavor.
Yes, this project is partially about funding a tour. Because without the experience of touring the world you wouldn’t have those awesome anecdotes of East Cackalacky adventure to add zest to our travel guide.
BUT we're not asking you to fund a vacation. We’re asking for your help so we can create a fantastic guidebook and CD. And we're going to document our day-to-day adventure and get you involved by filming videos for and about YOU!
We are not satisfied with the average. We’ve eschewed the easy and traditional paths to lead lives we can be proud of. We push ourselves to do new and unfamiliar things so that we can be better as performers and artists.
Sound familiar? A perspective you want more of? Then this is a book for YOU.
It’s an example of the best of DIY musicians.
It’s a framework for creative people who want to share their art around the world.
It’s an instruction manual for busking, a learnable trade.
Our past experience gives us a great perspective on the practical needs of musician travelers.
We'll give you tips on what cities to play, where to practice, how to network with other musicians on the road, which street folk are charming and which street folk will mess up your game, the best ways to get around and more.
How to deal with foreign cops? A busker must know! Need advice on where to covertly sleep outside in Eastern Europe? You’ll get that! Want to know how to hitchhike from Europe to India? You’ll get that too! Do white Americans get tipped when they play Asia? We don’t know yet but we’re going to find out! And you will too!
We know how hard it is and we'll be honest with you. The East Cackalackies are fantastic tour guides!
An added bonus. Because we will be recording our music on the road anyway. Because you should be listening to us.
One of our "Virtual Busker" videos from the road! A DVD of these is one of our donation rewards.
Busking will cover most of our travel expenses and we plan to work for the next six months to make money but we need your help!
To make the best possible guidebook and CD we’re going to need your help! If we have the funds, we can focus more energy on taking photos and videos, writing and recording.
We need better equipment, including: a new video camera, a digital audio recorder, a new laptop, a small amount for purchasing road worthy instruments overseas.
And some cash to bring you awesome rewards!
Your contributions are the key to our success!
If you believe in street performance or like what we do please show your support!
We want you our curious viewer, lover of weird art, fan of the wanderlust musician, to follow us around the world, to be our voyeurs as we embark upon the difficult performance act of BUSKING AROUND THE WORLD
Our busking act "earth shattering brilliance at bargain basement prices!"
Our travel videos - instructional AND fun - many more to come abroad!
Risks and challenges
Busking is the most challenging thing we've ever done.
And that's why you should be interested.
To be honest, there are many factors that could prevent us from being successful at it. Competition, weather, new local policies that prevent/curtail street performance, political strife.
We'll also be honest and say that if we get desperate, we'll be spending a lot more of our time performing to earn our living than working on documenting the tour.
But we've lived through worse. Four living-in-a-van tours make us hardy, hardy travelers. And ready to deal with adversity.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
