About this project

Hey, my name is Edward C. Robison III, and thanks for checking out my Kickstarter page! I have been a professional nature photographer for over 15 years. I started my career shooting film on a large-format 4x5 camera. I have seen the world of photography change dramatically over that short time. At first, I was hesitant to embrace the digital revolution, but as the technologies progressed I saw the incredible potential in the digital medium. Now, I am excited to see where the technology is headed, and I am always trying to stay ahead of the curve.
My new Kickstarter project "Ozark landscapes" An Augmented Reality Time-Lapse Photography Book blends both old and new technologies. In my early days of film, two of my passions were making books and creating long exposure photographs in which the passage of time could be seen in a single image. These days, with the power of computer processing, capturing hundreds of images over a span of several hours and combining them to create a moving time-lapse video has become quite popular. I am thrilled with the technical challenges time-lapse photography presents and captivated by the moving images.
While there are web platforms for sharing time-lapse videos such as Vimeo and YouTube, I wanted to find a unique way to share the time- lapse videos I created with the world. I have self published two coffee-table books and I have co-authored several others. For me coffee-table books take you on a guided journey through a photographer or an artist's eyes. They have a tactile old-world quality to them that the digital world does not.
I have had a coffee table book about the Ozark's landscape on my list of projects for almost the entire 15 years I've been photographing nature. The Ozark Mountains are a very special place in the Southern Midwest of the United States. If you haven't been to the Ozarks, they are a wooded, heavily eroded plateau that forms the most extensive Mountain region between the Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains. They have also been my home for the last six years. As the old folk saying goes, "It's not that the mountains are so steep, it's that the valleys are so deep!"
When I started writing down goals for 2014, two things that came to the top of my list were finishing a book on the Ozarks and create more time lapse images. I began to wonder how I could combine the two, and that's when I came up with using augmented reality in conjunction with the book. Augmented reality is an exciting, cutting-edge technology that allows for a digitally enhanced view of the real world. By using the cameras and sensors in smart phones or tablets, augmented reality adds layers of digital information, like videos, photos, and sounds.
My book "Ozark Landscapes" will contain still images taken from time-lapse videos I've created. Using an existing augmented reality app, you can point your device's camera directly at the book page and images will come to life in an animated time-lapse video. Best of all, the augmented reality app is free to download on either an Apple or Android smartphone or tablet! To gain access to the exclusive augmented reality book content - simply download the app and subscribe to my channel. In addition to over 30 interactive Time lapse images, the book will also contain still photographs of some of the best Ozarks images I have created over the last decade and a half.
From experience, I know that creating a full-color coffee table book is expensive and I can't do it alone. Kickstarter is set up to help the creator of the project to fulfill their dream while offering great rewards for backers of the project. If you look at the right, you'll see a list of great backer rewards like signed prints, books, and even custom photo workshops. In the workshops, you can learn digital and time-lapse photography techniques. You can even build your own motion time-lapse rig like the one I use to create amazing dynamic time-lapse videos. (see the photo of my time-lapse rig below... I've made a few modifications to this version to make it more compact. It now fits in a backpack.)
If you can't give anything to the project, that's okay, too. You can help by spreading the word. Tell your friends, family, neighbors, Facebook friends, and random strangers. The more people who know about the project the higher the chance it will succeed. I need all of your help to make this dream become a reality.
A NOTE ABOUT KICKSTARTER- Only projects that receive 100% of their goal within the allotted time-frame get funded! It is an ALL or NOTHING campaign. Kickstarter campaigns can and often do receive funding beyond their goal.
If funding is successful, it will be used to create and publish an 80 page, 8.5x11 full color soft-cover interactive coffee table book. In addition, to make the the content the best it can be, part of the funding will be applied toward the costs of traveling throughout the Ozarks to capture new Spring time-lapse images for the book.
Help me reach $11,500. ALL soft cover books will be upgraded to hard cover books. Recipients of Special Edition hard cover books will be upgraded to receive 2 signed hard cover copies. AND, even more time will be spent in the field capturing additional time-lapse images for the book!
Risks and challenges
There are many challenges in producing a coffee table book, from writers block to printing press delays. Having produced several self-published coffee table books, I have previous experience dealing with deadlines and production houses. I have created a reasonable time-line for completing the layout, printing, and binding of the finished book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
