She needs to kick start a property that has more branding. Her star isn't as bright as others.

I have to agree with Merlin's points too, if you are going to take another crack at it Melissa then take heed. Plus I know your busy but its worth taking the time to interact more with the people here, it would help draw some more in I suspect.

I am so sorry Mel about the project. I just pledged for the project and was excited to be a part of something. I was looking forward to getting the DVD and the shirt. I hope your trip is taking your mind off this project. I wish you luck in your future projects!!

So sad about the end of the campaign. If I could, I'd fund this myself but since I can't... I agree with Merin as well. I think the people that created this need to be a whole lot more humble. "Two of our main cast members (not Melissa) will follow you" Honestly?? I love you Mel, but I can't, I just can't. I hope you give this another shot though and this time succesful.

One of the things about these campaigns is that they really need to start with a bang. It seems like the only thing in common between the things I've backed that didn't get funded, was that they didn't get a good start out of the gate.

    6. Ian Millichamp on May 9, 2013

I've got to agree with Merlin, all excellent points. Another successful campaign is the NAVA water filters that have put out updates much more regularly and constantly offered more or different rewards or to extend current rewards once this goal or that is reached. In the end their campaign was a series of steps rather than 1 giant leap like this one.

    7. Merin on May 8, 2013

Just a few thoughts for the "second try" if it comes to that (for your sake I hope not, the script sample looked good) -

1: Don't just try and do what others are doing for rewards. Be creative and a bit unique. The posters, t-shirts and scripts are fine rewards, along with copies of the movie and even parts in the movie... but the voice mail messages and twitter following seems too much like Veronica Mars. Come up with stuff that seems like it fits the feel of the film you are trying to make.
2: Do some good pre-campaign marketing BEFORE starting the campaign. Create excitement. If you can swing it, film a short scene from the script with stand-in actors to show people what you hoping to do.
3: Stretch goals and new pledge amounts as the campaign moves forward are key to success, IMO. It's for a very different project, but you'd do well to go study Richard Burlew's Order of the Stick Kickstarter. For that matter see what Brian Fargo of inXile has done with Kickstarter (and his Kick It Forward initiative.)
4: Get some good support going in. Find the trend makers on Kickstarter and see about getting their support. Hit up the recognizable and influential backers to see if they'd give you an endorsement. It, of course, goes without saying that having some potential cult/fan favorite actors lined up to possibly star in the film can only help. It couldn't hurt to even contact Rob Thomas, Sebastian Gutierrez or others who've successfully run Kickstarter film campaigns.

It might even be a good idea already to shut this down, do some more planning using what you've learned from this experience, and come back stronger in a couple months. I honestly believe it will look better if you stop this with the intention of coming back with a stronger pitch than if you let it run to the end and it doesn't succeed.

In any case, best of luck going forward.

If your looking for a song for the movie p!nk has one about walk of shame.

    11. Richard Tucci on May 5, 2013

      Dear Melissa,

I am a huge fan of yours, but given that statistically, most successful kickstarter projects must make 25% of their goal amount in the first week, it looks unlikely that you will reach your final amount.

You and your mother are both intelligent people, and I’m sure between the comments on Kickstarter and the blogosphere articles, you’ve seen the suggestions that some people have made about how this campaign could have been improved. So, I’m not here to poor salt in your wounds.

However, I did pledge 10 dollars, so I would like to give my 2 cents. If you’re looking to kick start your film career (no pun intended), why are you going with a project that is trying to be a middle-of-the-road romantic comedy, that while it will get distribution through Millenium, will wind up in the 99 cent DVD bin?

The majority of great actors who have resuscitated their career, did it through playing a part in a quirky stand-out vehicle that played completely against type in order to show their acting versatility.

John Travolta - Pulp Fiction where he played a heroin addict and hitman.

Neil Patrick Harris - Who went from the sweet and adorable kid doctor to the sex pervert in the Harold & Kumar movies and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.

Kurt Russell - He started as a Disney teen idol in the 60’s, but after his ten year contract with Disney ran out, his career was revived in the 80’s by playing a drug-fiend Elvis, and Snake Pliskin. SNAKE MOTHER-F*****’ PLISKIN’!

Why aren’t you starting a Kickstarter account for something that stretches your versatility? And I’m not talking about NINE DEAD where you play a bitchy lawyer. I’m talking a gritty indie movie where you play a female Jason Bateman. I want to see CLARISSA KILLS THEM ALL!

I realize you’re a mother of three boys and a violent role may not be what you’re attracted to, but in a few years they’ll be teenage boys, and when they see their Mom kicking ass and taking names, they’re going to say, “My Mom is a badass!”

I mean seriously, why aren’t you doing a Kickstarter account for something like that? Or for Samurai Girl? Kickstarter loves samurais.

But I digress. I do wish you success and I hope you make your money, and a project that you’re passionate about, and if there’s anything I can do to help, please feel free to look me up at www.TucciEnterprises.com

By the way, I hope this development does not affect your distribution deal: http://variety.com/2013/biz/biz/avi-lerners-millennium-entertainment-up-for-sale-1200405738/

I have to say - I am pretty disappointed in MJH's fans. I've been a fan of hers for 19 years, since I was a 12 year old idolizing Clarissa, to the point where I wanted to legally change my name to Clarissa. I thought she was the coolest person ever and wanted to dress like her in the theme song in the show so badly.

The script for thia movie looks funny, witty, sexy and smart and I know for a fact that Melissa can pull this character off with charm and realism and make the viewer relate to and emphatize with the character and what she goes through in the film.

I'm shocked and disheartened that MJH's "fans" have only contributed $54k so far. What kind of fans agree with the studioa who refused to back or fund this film? Why, if you're a fan, would you want to see Melissa typecast like this? Why wouldn't you want to see her stretch her acting muscle and prove there is more to her than Sabrina?

I look at videogame kickstarters, like Skullgirls DLC, which made over $800k when its' goal was only $150k and it's incredibly disapppointing to me that MJH doesnt have more support than this.

Melissa, if you see this, I am behind you all the way and would love to see you in this film. You have the charm, wit, depth ans sexiness to totally bring Darci to life. Good luck Melissa!

It's a few things. The rewards are too expensive - a poster and a PDF script - $75! Come on. There's also no digital download the world over, or a movie showing online. Add to that the lack of updates, no t-shirt design, or soundtrack information, and the unknown project...

As for Zach, Scrubs was a massive show all over the world (a big cult hit in the UK, where I'm from) and his Kickstarter page is far superior. More info and more rewards.

    15. Joseph De Santis on May 2, 2013

The thing with Zach is simple. He was on a hugely popular tv show more recently than Melissa. He is also well known for garden state. Melissa is great and she does have a show currently. But its not on the level of what scrubs was nor is she known for her movie roles of late.

I think she would have raised 2m easily for a sabrina movie or even a 12 episode season. Even a clarissa movie would have hit the 2m goal. But to the average person what is darci, what knowledge does melissa have outside of acting. It seems her mom and her own sabrina rights and they are very active behind the scene but know one knows this cause we have never really heard about the behind the scenes stuff.

Its the same when comparing verionica mars. The show was a cult hit and has grown bigger in syndication . Bell has tranistioned well to movies staring in quite a few sucesfull ones. Even the direct and writer have moved to some famous stuff.

I hope she raises the 2m. It sounds like a good idea but we can't really hate on Zac or the other kickstarters.

    16. Trina Balston on May 2, 2013

How goes the digital download thing? I saw that you were working on finding a way for international people to see the film. :) If that make sense...

@Michael to an extent you have a point. But, I don't personally see this as an effort to expand the fanbase. I see this more as an effort to get Melissa a bit wider range of opportunity. And it does look like a very good script. We don't necessarily need to hit full funding in order for this to happen, we just need a sufficient number of backers to show that it's something that has enough viewership to pay for itself.

Which is going to take a lot more than 266 people ultimately.

BTW, does anybody else find it to be a bit stilted to use her full name? First name or last name are both kind of awkward, but somewhat less so than using the full name.

Hi all, it's Melissa here. Just wanted to add to the conversation about my fan base. I know 100% that my fans are the most loyal and supportive on the globe. Whether or not this kickstarter thing works doesn't change that one way or another. Zachs project is a different beast since he has Oscar winning producers and celeb friends with 6mil twitter followers. The difference is he pulled out the big guns and Hollywood got on board. For me, it's all up to the fans and I know they wish me the best no matter what project I venture into. Thanks to everyone who has supported this and I hope you will spread the word so we can make this hilarious movie!

Frank: You should take another look at Zach Braff's kickstarter page. Its not a sequel, but even if it was, the fact that it funded so quickly is still a sign that his fan base is strong.

Having said that, it seems to me that Kickstarter is an odd place for MJH to go to fund a movie to expand her fan base. The people she is trying to add to her fan base aren't going to pay for the movie because they aren't part of her fan base yet. The people who are part of her fan base probably don't care that much about expanding her fan base, and will generally be more interested in funding what they know, rather then something new. That's why the Veronica Mars people are making a Veronica Mars movie rather then a totally new movie with the same cast. Zach Braff is in a somewhat different situation, since his fan base is mostly interested in him making a new movie, rather then another Garden State. Although, speaking for myself, I wouldn't mind if he got Natalie Portman back.

    21. Frank DeMartini on April 26, 2013

Michael: Zach Braff is literally doing a Veronica Mars. He is selling a sequel to "Garden State" which is a very popular cult movie. Almost as popular as Veronica Mars. This is Melissa selling something that: a. she has never done before; and, b. something that is not a Sabrina or Clarissa sequel. Accordingly, it is her trying to broaden her fan base and attempting to do something difference. That is why it is different than the two other examples.

    22. Thomas A. Hennigan on April 25, 2013

I enjoyed the script excerpt -- some very funny stuff "I'm old enough to be _her_ big sister" made me laugh out loud and it's easy to see Miss Hart handling the character and delivering the scene with aplomb. I'm not sure if the OMG-speak will work, it seems just a bit dated but I don't know what you'd do in its place to sell the age difference as economically. If Darci had a hair clip, the kind that look like a stork's beak, she could use it on the joint as a roach clip as she does the last speech, drop the roach and use the clip as the last fix on her hair and exit. I think it would be a nice touch. (I am now officially the cliche annoying backer with ideas for the show.)

@Frank: I'm not surte I understand you. Didn't Zach Braff just show his fan base is strong? I stumbled onto his Kickstarter by accident, and hadn't seen anything about it anywhere until it popped up on Kicktraq. Both Zach Braff's kickstarter and the Veronica Mars one funded before the web publicity kicked in.

WIth no offense to MJH, I just don't think her general fan base is as strong. I also think her KS page has not had as much work put into it as the other two.

    25. Frank DeMartini on April 24, 2013

Evan - I don't think it is that the fan base is weak. Zach Braff just proved otherwise. It is totally about the publicity. We need to figure out how to get into the Twitterverse.

As fot the Travel and passports issue that creates a whole new set of problems but I'll just stick with one. Your already asking these people to donate a few thousand dollars now they have to spend more for travel expenses and passport?

    32. James Walsh on April 16, 2013

Even the VM project ripped on the Assoc. Pro. Credit and look how much they are asking for it, if indeed it grants access to the actors I would surely make use of my power. Power granted to me by the money I .spent.

    34. Gui Omena on April 15, 2013

I for one think the rewards are way too expensive and another problem is that most of them does not ship worldwide. If only they were to do an effort to make the DVDs and digital downloads available worldwide... You can not do a Kickstarter project simply basing in the Veronica Mars movie project, which was an exception; it will not happen to every Kickstarter project. You have to think and be smart, this is not a franchise and not a follow up to a cult tv series either. I did plege and I hope it gets the funds that it needs, but the creators have to figure out a better way for it to be done and stop asking too much from Kickstarter donators. You were clearly expecting too much when creating this project, and if you don't low down those you might just not get it done.

    35. Mike Metzler

Kicktraq has this project trending toward $234,000 :( There is still time to reach 2 mil and we know it can be done. MJH should try a live twitter chat. We can learn more about the project and possibly get it to trend. Rob and KB had success when they did their chat. It also helped that VM project had several cast members tweeting.

Since there isn't a cast, I would love to know who she is considering for each role. I'm sure they have different actors in mind. I would love to see her do another movie with Adrian Grenier. A few of my other suggestions would be Nico Tortorella(The Following), Shiloh Fernandez, Brandon Barash, Josh Henderson, or Ian Somerhalder. Lesser known actors, but they would most likely be willing to do a low budget film.

    37. Missing avatar

Steven Lee on April 15, 2013

@Robert You're right, Veronica Mars has a built in fanbase, an unknown movie doesn't. MJH needs to create more videos about the project, more updates, and more pledges. If the digital copy was available outside of America it would help. People won't pledge for a movie they can't see :(

With that being said, I wish her the best of luck, and I hope it picks up soon.

    38. tarasis on April 15, 2013

I think part of the issue is that this is a KS for a person, rather than a known series or known movie franchise. We might like MJH but we currently know very little about the project, which when its a known franchise isn't such an issue as you know you'll get more of what you loved previously.

People would, likely, stump up for a new Dawsons Creek but probably not a new James Van Der Beek vehicle.

    39. Trina Balston on April 15, 2013

I'd be very disappointed if this is the result of people not thinking that she can stretch out of the previous very clean roles.

This is One of the moments i can't understand kickstarter... Why does MJH not receive any attention close to VM?
