About this project
This project popped up in my mind when I was teaching my kids to play with origami paper. So, I tried to find a good and suitable solution for a folding lamp that could be made from flat sheet wood and transformed to a functional lamp. After tests with many paper prototypes and real wood materials, I have found a great and functional solution that could fold the wood. After trying it with veneer and backing it with Dupont Tyvek it turned out great.
There are 2 types of lamps, first is The "Arrow" Lamp and second is The "Loop" Lamp.
The "Arrow" lamp is designed as a task light for reading or working on any table without any glare from the light source. It comes with touch sensor switch at the base plus one USB output for smartphones.
The "Loop" lamp is designed for your bedside table that is used to illuminate the room and your bed at night. The lamp can also be used as a reading lamp making it multifunctional. It comes with touch sensor switch at the base plus one USB output for smartphones.
The prototype was cut from a laser machine for precise production in order to ensure that all lamps would be the same excellent quality.
I am the product designer and inventor, I specialize in everyday objects, furniture and lamp design. I have designed for many brands and also successfully created my own brand. I have also designed LED lamps that have been exported to Europe since 2007. From 2009-2012, I received many international awards from my lamp designs.
With Kickstarter platform and by cutting out the middle men, I can reduce costs, increase customer relations and can offer the good design products to end customer in the fair price.
I have been performing research and development to invent new ways to work with natural wood veneer for many years. This is a new technique that integrates classic origami skills, wood materials, and successful award winning lamp design experience.
We need your help getting our first production run completed and putting our lamps in the homes of people who will love them! With a pledge of $80 or more, you will own one of the first folding wood lamps from this collection as your reward. There is another way help this project. Please scroll up to the top of this page and share on Facebook or Twitter.
You word of mouth is needed and appreciated. Sharing on social media will help your friends find a quality product and help we reach the new stretch goal.
Thank you so much for checking out our project and thanks again for your support.
Each lamp is created from careful selected premium FSC. Wood Veneer, Oak, Walnut, Maple, Teak, and Bamboo. Each veneer is laminated into 3 layers and a backing with 0.48 mm. Tyvek, which strengthens and holds all the pieces together and is used as a hinge when the lamp is folded. Each piece is cut by a precise laser machine but sanded, polished, and assembled by hand with care. From start to finish, every lamp receives the attention and love it deserves. Origami Lamps include a 100% natural finish with hand polishing wood oils to ensure they keep the natural look and also protect the wood texture. It comes with a bright LED and intelligent control system. We have completed the prototype of the touch sensor that is attached to the wood for activating the on/off and dim effect. We also added the USB output for smartphone chargers so they can go directly into the lamp base for convenience when charging your phone.
- Low Voltage LED with Touch Sensor Control
- 110-220 V. DC Adaptor for worldwide use
- ON/OFF and Dim Features with convenient touch sensor on wood
- USB output for smartphone chargers (5V. 1A.)
- Thin, flat and easily folded by hand
- Attached with Hi-Power magnets
We have been spent a lot of time in past 6 months studying the shape and form of each lamp with many paper prototypes. Then, we transferred it to CAD for the cutting with our laser supplier. The LED and electronic parts was also tested to make sure that the light distribution was effective and heat management was controlled inside the wood.
NOTE- variation in wood grain means your item will look slightly different than what is pictured
Since the design is flat, and is created from a sheet of wood. We can save up to 72% of the box space in transportation, thus reducing the carbon foot print. We try to reduce size more in final design such as the smaller adapter sourcing.
Shipping to Canada & Mexico: add $15 to pledge amount.
Shipping to EU Nations: add $40 to pledge amount.
Shipping to Australia and Pacific: add $40 to pledge amount.
Shipping to AEC. country and Hong Kong: add $25 to pledge amount.
Once our campaign goal has been reached, we will immediately place the order with our suppliers and manufactures. Our goal is to begin delivery in October 2013.
The funds will be used towards lamp production. We’ve already built a working prototype, and have begun testing. Your backing will be used to fund:
- Special Wood Veneer orders
- LED and final mass production of the Flex PCB and switching
- Manufacturing, laser cutting services, and assembly molding
- Packaging design and production
- Delivering cost
- Certifications required to offer internationally, UL / CE. etc.
The lamp in the picture is the 90% prototype. We still need some fine tuning of details such as a smoother dimming step, minor size adjustments due to wood variations, and a smaller adapter for smaller packaging.
We take pride in keeping our backers informed, and will regularly post updates on our development progress.
January-May 2013 : design and prototyping
June 2013 : Start the kickstarter campaign.
July 2013 : Done campaign and start fine tune design for manufacture
August 2013 : Order all materials and design final packaging
September 2013 : Assembly and testing, QC. and ship to USA.
October 2013 : Mail the final product to all Backer

Risks and challenges
When we start a new project, it always includes some risk. But with years of experience in design and product development fields, I am certain in a successful and quality product. Our supplier and manufacturer are very professional with a proven track record that will serve our production needs very well. However, some points should be addressed and clarified:
PCB and switch + smartphone charger
The prototype was done very well, but during the mass production we had to reduce the size of all PCB and separate the module into small modules. We currently have two styles of lamps and more in the near future so we need to wait for final designs to be completed. All final designs need to be adjusted after the campaign is completed. We are confident in handling this, our R&D took place in Taiwan and we don't expect any delay from them.
LED and Adapter
We are sourcing for LED mass production to obtain lower costs and correct specifications in regards to brightness, CRI, and heat management issues. We seek to utilize low heat LED and low currents, but we also need to match with a higher voltage adapter.
The prototype lamps need to be finalized again, due to the change of electronic component size because we would like to decrease the packaging size as much as we can to save on shipping costs from Thailand to the USA.
Since the lamps will manufactured in Thailand and shipped to USA. My partner, in Chicago, will handle the land shipment to all “backers” in the USA. through USPS. We plan to use the cloud based online shipping solution (http://www.shipstation.com) to manage our backer database and let all backers track their shipment for themselves. For international backers in Europe and Asia, we will ship directly from Thailand.
We've allotted extra time in our schedule to protect for these risks. We plan to remain completely transparent with our backers throughout the entire “kickstarter to shipping” process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The lamp is bright enough and the Lux is around 750-900 Lux. Now we are sourcing for the the LED that match the spec. The LED in prototype is too yellow. The final product will be warm white 3,000K - 4,000K color temp. The LED is builded in the lamp and can't replace. But the life time of LED is around 50,000 Hr.
Of course. You can dim the light by touch on the wood base of the lamp.
Yes, it is.
Canada and Mexico: add $15 more to pledge amount
EU, Australia and Pacific: add $40 more to pledge amount
AEC Country and Hong Kong: add $25 more to pledge amount
The 1/4 model comes in wood and function folded like the real one but without LED and power.
