ABOUT THIS PROJECT

3 years in the making, California Forever is almost done!  KQED Television in San Francisco has presented the two-part program to PBS and PBS has accepted and will broadcast the program nationally in the Fall 2012.  We need everyone’s help to cross the finish line. 

 About The Programs

Three years ago we read a news article about plans to build a 6-lane toll road that would run straight through a state park north of San Diego.  Many consider San Onofre State Beach one of the best surfing spots on the West Coast.  Numerous campers use the park as the only summer getaway their families can afford.  Not only would the road threaten one of surfing’s most celebrated breaks, it would pave over one of the most popular campgrounds in Southern California.  How could a proposal to destroy a state park even be on the table?  Didn’t citizens sacrifice everything years ago to create these places as parks in order to preserve their beauty and heritage for all of us…forever?

We quickly wrote letters to leaders in the state park movement suggesting that if a “reasonable discussion” about putting a toll road through a state park was underway, then there was a serious disconnect.  The fact that parks are essential to the public good had been forgotten.  We proposed producing a film that would speak of the priceless value of state parks and the rich natural and cultural heritage they preserve – underscoring why parks were set aside in the first place.  This was three years before park closures were even on the radar!

A year later, a group of state park supporters coalesced around the idea and located the funds necessary to make the film.  We were tasked with creating two programs – the first would celebrate the history of California State Parks and a second would focus on state parks future.  Two years later, we completed a 75-minute film reminding viewers of the beauty and legacy of California State Parks.  The film did the festival circuit, won some prizes, but had no real “home” until we brought it to KQED in San Francisco with the hopes of a regional California public television airing.  KQED was so excited by the film, they felt it should reach an audience far broader than just California.  They wanted to present it to PBS for a national broadcast, but there was a hitch – it was too long for a one-hour time slot and would have to be cut down.

In the end, after scouting nearly 100 state parks and shooting for 61 days in 47 parks, we produced a two-part “limited series” called CALIFORNIA FOREVER for PBS, which tells the story of California State Parks, the most diverse state park system in the nation.  Episode One celebrates its sweeping history from Yosemite to the Redwood Coast; Lake Tahoe to the Anza Borrego Desert; La Purisima Mission to Historic Monterey and Gold Country; to Big Sur, Point Lobos and the magnificent Hearst Castle overlooking the sea.  It illuminates pivotal players in the creation of the state parks – including amongst others, both Frederick Law Olmsted - the landscape architect of Central Park in New York City who also authored the plan for management of Yosemite in 1864 - California first state park – and his son, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. who in1929 published a report nominating 125 scenic places and historic sites that became the foundation of the California State Park System – as well as Henry Osborn, Madison Grant, and John Merriam; who formed Save the Redwoods League and raised private funds to purchase old growth redwood groves threatened with clear cutting to preserve them as state parks.  With breathtaking imagery, the program reveals how California’s unique beauty and historic value continues to inspire passion and intense determination in individuals to save these places -- forever.

Episode Two looks to the future of California State Parks as well as the critical contemporary trends that could have devastating impacts for not only parks in California, but state and national parks across the country during the next century.  Among these are population growth and the increasing density of urban areas causing the need to “re-wild” inner city areas to become parks; the conflict between different activities such as nature contemplation and off-road vehicle use; the critical habitat provided to native species by parks and preserves; and the call for historic sites that honor the diversity of California’s as well as the nation’s peoples.

What we have left to do now and why we need your support

Both programs are complete! AND we have secured a national broadcast for both one-hour programs on PBS with air-dates this Fall 2012. 

Acceptance of the programs by PBS was welcome news, but since we did not anticipate it, we now face funding needs in key areas for promotion and publicity in order to draw viewers to the broadcast – and inspire audiences to preserve these storied places for all of us, now and for generations to come.

We need to raise a total of $25,000 to fund the following

PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR THE NATIONAL BROADCAST - $12,500

Developing and coordinating a promotional campaign for internet, news, television, and print is time consuming and labor intensive. It requires the talents of a number of experienced professionals in a variety of fields. We have engaged a professional campaign staff and we need your help in this effort. We have spent three years making a great program. However, if no one sees it will cannot be a sucess. Please help us in this effort. DVD & BLURAY SCREENERS $2,500 

Hundreds of DVDs and BluRay discs must be made available to press, Internet, and television reviewers in advance of the program airing. 

WEBSITE DESIGN & MAINTENANCE  $5,000

CAL4EVER.COM is currently on-line as an “off the shelf” template that serves our short-term needs. The site has short-comings that limit on-line options. We want to create a user-friendly site that will provide visitors, professional colleagues, and members of the media easy access to a multitude of elements. These include preview clips and segments, Electronic Press Kit (EPK), background about the programs, film festival screenings, critical reviews, and links to a variety of like-minded organizations and individuals. Funding for this element would also include services of a part-time person to blog about the programs and update and refresh the site for the six-months leading up to the broadcast. 

SOCIAL NETWORKING COORDINATOR $5,000 

This part-time position will open CALIFORNIA FOREVER pages on Facebook, LinkedIn, IMDB, YouTube, Vimeo and other social networking sites. The Coordinator will place all sites on line and manage links, post weekly updates to each site, respond to “friends” and e-mail traffic. The social networking sites will go up in June 2012 and remain active beyond the broadcast.

Final Thoughts

We cannot tell you how excited we are to get CALIFORNIA FOREVER out into the world.  It is the culmination of many dozens of people’s passionate commitment to the project and its subject matter as well as labor over the last three years.  We are sad to say the release of the program coincides precisely with the threat of park closure arriving on people’s radar across the nation.  But we are proud for this film to be part of the growing and hopeful movement to address this.  Although we have set our goal at $25,000 to pay for additional promotion to increase our audience, even if we reach our Kickstarter goal, please continue donating! 

Anything donated above this amount will help fund an extensive screening and speaking tour in the U.S. at colleges and universities; pay for us to travel to film festivals and assist us in hiring an educational consultant to build a program whereby existing school curriculums can utilize the film.
