BUT WHAT ARE THE CARDS? in a nutshell, I am trying the idea of making the paintings I have been working on since starting to work, live in the form of trading cards. So, with that in mind, I self-produced the first of three series (Series A), and now I am trying to kickstart the concept with people, in order to be able to produce Series B and C. Which is key I think, to the whole concept. I have designed the 3 series to be inter-connected, by showing details of some of the more complicated pieces in the first two series, and then resolving in the final series (series C). Anyway, not to write a novel but as a result of considering this kickstarter, I have decided to play with the idea of letting some of my paintings exist in some other ways; like a high-quality silk scarf, a stuffed-plush monster, and little trading card drawings.
ABOUT THE PAINTINGS:
I once heard it said that, in the end, it's love and ridiculousness that matter. It was from a Kerouac interview I had heard on cassette years back, and it stuck. I found that it was becoming the quiet narrative behind my paintings. Like finding something funny in the middle of a disaster, or tenderness in the throes of battle.
All images shown are scheduled for Series B of the trading cards
When painting, it's more of a search than the execution of a plan. It's an idea I read about in Steven King's book, On Writing, where he wrote about throwing away working with a plot, and instead writing from the characters and situation. He found that his writing started to surprise him, which in turn, would then surprise many of his readers. It's the way I prefer to work, bashing my way through; sometimes with bravery, sometimes with softness, but always it seems, with a clunky quality that I have embraced.
It's the, "What the hell will happen next?" nature of painting that keeps me intrigued. It constantly has the potential of becoming a great, hairy, tough, heartbreaking adventure that finds a way to humble me every day.
THE TRADING CARDS
Recently, while I was updating my archive, I was looking at all these pieces, many which have hardly been seen in public. I started considering different venues for highlighting some of these pieces, and was then lucky enough to catch Beatrix Potter: The Picture Letters show at the Morgan Library in NY this past year. In there she had a beautiful, stunning board game she had designed. It just oozed her passion for her art and how she wanted to express it in different arenas. This inspired me to try a few different ideas that led me to developing the concept of these three series of trading cards. Interconnected and telling a story individually and throughout the three series.
So this January I set out with designing and self-publishing Series A. When they were released and I saw how people were interacting with them, I loved the reaction and felt like it was a concept worth developing further. I decided to launch this Kickstarter for Series B.
There will be in total, 3 trading card series (A,B, and C) with 135 total cards available (45 in each series). Series A was the inaugural set, and the focus was on the design per card as well as developing the relationships between the cards as they are displayed side-by-side on each page. Some of the cards even begin on one card and finish on another, like a two piece puzzle. I would like to expand the idea vertically in series B and create a complete 9-piece card puzzle in Series C.
Additionally, designing Series A set up 5 of the cards as details of some of the more complicated paintings I have made. Series B will focus again on other tiny moments, perhaps previously missed in the works. All of this will resolve in Series C where the pieces will be shown as the full piece, some in 9-pc card puzzle form like discussed above. In addition there are 15 different painting sticker designs (5 per series). I am a sucker for foils too, so when I was talking with the printer and I learned it was an option I just couldn't help myself. There are 6 foils in each Series (see Series A card image below).
Packs: Each pack, whether it be an A, B or C Series, will follow the model established in Series A; 12 trading cards per pack, with each pack containing at least one foil, one sticker, one catalog card and 9 regular cards of different rarity. (Randomness and ratios will be much improved in Series B and C. it was the weakest link of Series A in my opinion. Opening a pack should feel a little like Christmas morning, you know?)
Rarity: There are 4 types of cards in all the series: Common, Less Common, Less Common Still and Foil. This is denoted on each card in the bottom right, with every pack containing a card key on the catalog card. Series B and C will see improved design, larger & easier to read card numbers and a redesigned catalog card.
Incentives: From sketch cards, custom binders and the highest quality silk scarf I could find (the same makers that MOMA uses for their high-end scarves featuring art by Miro and the like), and the ridiculous 12" Because-of-Toast stuffed monster, I wanted to offer you rewards that hopefully surprise and intrigue you.
This Kickstarter Project is for the designing, making, and distribution of Joe Sorren Trading Cards: Series B and for funding the incentives being offered. Risks and challenges
Throughout my career, I have gone out of my way to always do more than is expected, and have delivered on the projects I have created in the past. I came up with the goal amount because it is enough to cover the production and packaging of the Series B cards, making the scarves, the Because-of-Toast Monsters, the binders (all produced by wind power and are 100% organic), stickers (high quality, waterproof) supplies, Kickstarter and Amazon fees associated with this project, and shipping and handling. Anything over the top of the goal helps me to be able to design and not stress too hard for rent etc. But even if we barely make it over, who needs sleep!:) In all seriousness, I am excited to have this chance to roll the dice and perhaps be able to make these items for you. Fingers crossed! (Which makes painting tricky:)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
