Opulent Chill is a building a new Structure and Lounge / Chill Space at Burning Man 2017
Opulent Chill is a new sound camp at Burning Man 2017 and we need YOUR help to make this vision come to life! Opulent Temple co-Founder Syd Gris and his sister G'Lux have teamed up with other OT members and the newly interested, to create this side project to provide a sanctuary of chill vibes, dance performance, music, gathering & connection in BRC. The camp was inspired by the chill lounge/ side room at the annual San Francisco version of Opulent Temple Sacred Dance ‘white party in which a beautiful loungey space is created with more chilled out music, and all forms of dance and theatrical performance happening on a stage throughout the night.
Our goal is to create a space we feel there aren’t enough options for to enjoy in BRC.
A nice respite from the pounding beats and high energy of the dance floors, Opulent Chill is a place to go sit down, lay back, listen to some downtempo / chill / ambient / trip hop / deeper deep house / eclectic sound scapes, chat with friends, make out with your lover, enjoy large scale visuals, and watch various forms of dance and performance on a stage to take in various forms of slower paced beauty all at once. Couches and mats, pillows and hammocks, nooks and corners for spontaneous conversation, you get the idea. The structure itself will be 60' x 40', with a vertical height of 20 feet in the center. It will have 5 custom made screens for video mapping from our team of VJ's, awesome sound provided by the same crew OT has used, intelligent lighting, cabanas, fire sculptures, worldly fabrics and accents, other forms of deco and beauty, and of course some opulence!
We are 100% Community Funded
Why is a theme camp / sound camp asking for money? A good question! First off, did you know the Burning Man org gives only minimal support to theme camps? Even though we bet many of you buy a ticket to be able to come to dance or experience the kind of community connection opportunities Theme camps provide, especially Sound Camps, unlike art installations on the open playa, we can’t apply for art grants or get help with any tickets. Many great camps over the years have built amazing camps that clearly have plenty of ‘ART', but - if that art is in a theme camp you can’t even apply for an art grant to be chosen on the merits of the piece like you could for that same art piece if it were on the open playa. (This is still lame, IOHO). You also don’t see many theme camps asking for donations as part of a crowdfund campaign because the reality is, in this day and age of Burning Man, most music oriented camps and big art cars - but not all- are funded by millionaires …. (or a few pot farmers) - but we're not!
We want to give a platform to dancers, performers and other kinds of artists in the community
(And yes, but not limited to - DJ's). Our range of performances can be a wide range of sublime to bizarre. Belly dancers, ritual performance, whirling dervishes, improv, theatrical spectacle, ballet, contortionists, cirque, sensual go-go etc. We want men and women and any gender ranges in between with the raw or refined talent to help set the tone. We’re looking for performers who both may want to perform to their own music or can do their thing in the middle of someone else’s DJ set or playlist. If your act involves high energy music that may be too incongruent with our vibe it may not be a good fit, but get in touch to find out! To start that conversation, e mail: firstname.lastname@example.org
We Need Your Support
We rely on fundraisers and the community for us to be there. Please give what you can, and we hope you watch the video all the way through to see our 'sign of the times' disclaimer about giving to Burning Man related projects. Despite the excessive elements involved in doing a theme camp at Burning Man, and the lack of support from the org, we still think there’s value in creating spaces for connection, celebration, and a chance to re-charge our faith in humanity to be in a better position to be an instrument for positive change in a country that badly needs as many awake activists as possible. You can also camp with us if you want to help! Get in in touch through our website or Facebook page.
Thank you for supporting us over the years and on these future projects. We couldn't do it without you!
(This rendering is just to give you a rough idea, we promise it will look a lot more interesting in person!)
Risks and challenges
We have (by our standards) a moderately ambitious fundraising plan for our total budget that includes this campaign and the camp members that pay dues to make it happen. That said, we need this campaign to work to have this camp at Burning Man 2017. Our producers have a long history of doing what they said they were going to do when it comes to realizing Burning Man projects and we know exactly what we're getting ourselves into.
We have developed a production and fulfillment system to ensure everyone gets their Kickstarter rewards in a timely manner. We are very excited about our rewards, which go beyond the traditional knickknacks and t-shirts, and into the realm of transcendent experiences that you will remember forever. We really hope you can make a donation, even $20 bucks is very helpful!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
