About this project
What is considered ART?
You are exposed to artistic expression arguably every waking second. I am in a position to share a culturally unique and diverse cross-section of artists, each with a distinct craft often tied to their ethnic traditions dating back many decades and centuries.
I am seeking to create a brilliant collection forged in film, and available to everyone for free! Imagine a miniature Smithsonian, with bonus insights and comparison, available 24/7. With the range of categories included in this film, the art will be as diverse as the artists themselves. Join me in discovering all of this wonderful art. It's all ART!

I have always lived in Lancaster County, PA. This is such a unique and culturally diverse area, and I have been struck with the inspiration to share a very special part of our culture here ... our art.
With such a rich multi-cultural heritage, and emerging modern art scene, this area has so much to offer. This is not a very large area geographically nor per capita, but it makes our art scene that much more unique. We have such a diverse selection and I would like to film a full-length documentary to juxtapose the different categories. I would also like find the links between the old world traditions and our modern artists. Some of the categories I intend to cover include:
- Fiber arts
- Hex Signs
- Wood working
- Clay pottery
- Local Native American art history
- Cultural art history
- and whatever else fits the bill
While some folks might not be able to see the art in these categories, I will stand up strongly and proclaim "It's all ART!".
I started a website last year at http://www.amishroadshow.com, with the intention of helping people to discover all that Lancaster County has to offer. I also intend to provide our small businesses with an alternative platform to make themselves known. This has been a constant work in progress and I am constantly working to improve the site. For the time being this is only a hobby that I engage in when I am not manufacturing hydraulic hoses. I'm ok with that, but I would now like to use this kickstarter project to focus on the art and artistic expression of our communities. I would love to show you around and introduce you to some amazing artists.
I feel that this documentary would be a great way to help you discover Lancaster County, and our arts. The idea of crowd-funding this project is also inline with the core values of the Amish Road Show. I have tried to maintain a community based approach to my site, and really be about people. As I stated in the video, this was a very strong agricultural area, but that is becoming a very difficult way for our residents to earn a living. That is why so many of them are turning to their crafts. Being that this is Lancaster County and we have such a large amount of Amish and Mennonites, the old world traditions brought over with their ancestors are on full display. This has offered these cultural communities a new lease on life and is enabling them to continue living life on their terms.
If you've ever lived in Lancaster City, you know that it has had it's share of problems in the past. The effects of the downtown art scene are dramatic. It has truly been a revitalizing and community building effort on the part of the city's residents. Not to mention the stunning works of art that have taken the stage.
You may live here, or you may live there, but I would like to capture this diverse artistic location and bring it to you wherever you are!
Why I am seeking funding:
I am seeking to raise $15,000 mostly for equipment. I have been making videos for over a year and slowly making upgrades and improvements as I go. However, the equipment I am currently using will not be able to support a production of this size.
The types of equipment I am looking for include:
- Audio recording equipment
- A computer (I am currently using a four year old laptop)
- Editing software
Some other items I will be acquiring:
- Items to create and distribute DVDs
- Promotional items
- random supplies
I have tried various other methods of raising funding to help improve the Amish Road Show. Many of these methods were either shut down by the gatekeepers, or I was ineligible due to my lack of credit. By creating this movie I will be able to raise money through your donations, which will provide people with a great look at Lancaster County's art, as well as provide me with equipment that can also be used on other creative projects in the future. I have a lot of ideas in the works, but my equipment is seriously holding me back. I can assure you of this ... whatever equipment I purchase it will be used heavily in the promotion and advancement of my community.
I am NOT looking to get rich, or even sell a bunch of copies of this movie. I have no interest in fame or fortune. I am all about sharing Lancaster County, and the stories of our people. That plays a large role in my intentions to make this movie publicly available online. I love the creative outlet that the internet has provided for all of us, and I would like to get serious about using it to reach out to lots of real world people.
Some past video works:
There are things I would change about both of those videos, but considering the equipment I am using it's a wonder they came out that good.
I am ready to begin filming as soon as we reach our goal. I anticipate completing the movie by October 2012.
I sincerely hope you find it in your heart to support this project. I am really looking forward to filming, and getting this thing underway. Please remember that if I don't raise my stated goal I don't get anything. So please support this project at whatever level your are able, and help even further by spreading the word to all your friends and family.
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to sharing this beautiful and unique movie with you.
