Antarctica - Land of Ice endeavors to tell the story of the Antarctic Peninsula in one of the newest multimedia forums available today - as an interactive electronic book using the features of the Apple iPad™.
This medium offers the viewer a chance to read as a book, but interact with the images, the maps, and the videos in a truly unique experience. Our goal is to use this capability to create a very professional, visually stunning, compelling story of the Antarctic Peninsula - its scenery, its flora, and its history through compelling photographs and stories.
The Antarctic Peninsula and the outlying South Shetland Islands are a collection of glaciers, towering icebergs, bare rocky beaches, abandoned seal hunting stations, and volcanoes. It is also the home of penguins, seals, whales, seabirds, and so much more. Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest location on earth.
To tell this compelling story of the southernmost continent, I made multiple trips to Antarctica from the southern tip of South America. Capturing some 40,000 images along with video footage, the story becomes one of incredible scenery, the tenderness of a mother penguin feeding its chicks, leopard seals on the prowl, and humpback whales performing their 'bubble net" feeding of krill. Add to this background the story of human exploration in the late 1800s and early 1900s - of ships caught in the fast freezing waters, being crushed by the ice. Early attempts to establish a whaling station at Port Foster... the escape of the British Expedition Survey staff from a severe storm near Adelaide Island....
We will produce:
• An interactive book on the Apple iPad™
• Include 200+ images and a collection of videos from Antarctica
• Use GPS captured with the images to map the locations visited
• Illustrate the variety of glaciers and icebergs along the Antarctic coast
• Show penguins, seals, whales, and seabirds in their natural environment
