About

A book about how to achieve meaningful success as a self-published author or, as we like to think of it, how to play for a living while still managing to pay your electric bill.

Does the term “gatekeeper” make you nauseous?

Do you cringe at the thought of selling your soul to some Big Five publisher in return for peanuts?

Do you want to prove your grandmother wrong, that there’s no market for transsexual zombie erotica?

Then Self-Publishing Is For Losers is the book for you. The stereotype is that self-publishing is for losers. We all know this. Self-publishing is, we’re told, at best a license for mediocrity and at worst the literary equivalent of several toilet bowls full of sour milk. But if you’re a writer, then you know that traditional publishing is about as friendly to new and original ideas as your cat is to the average gerbil.

Increasingly, traditional publishing follows rather than leads the market. The focus is on what sells: on clear genre categorization and well-defined audiences pre-primed to buy one book by having bought a hundred others just like it. Genre-defying or otherwise original books often have a hard time finding a home, simply because they’re too original. And the worst part is that people want to read these books, as sales statistics for self-published books have shown. People want to read them; otherwise, they wouldn’t be selling. They’re just not on the shelves, because traditional publishing finds them frightening.

It isn’t that there’s no market for anything in, say, the fantasy genre except thousand page stories about men waving swords while spouting vaguely political drivel. It’s that the publishing industry knows that such books tend to sell and thus as a rule prefers them over, for example, more feminist-positive manuscripts. Until, of course, some model of that genre breaks through. Much like Dan Brown’s books sat on the shelves for years, gathering dust, until The Da Vinci Code was discovered. And thus the “religious thriller” section in the bookstore was born. A lot of other writers who’d pitched similar manuscripts and failed suddenly had reason to resubmit—and to the same people!

And sure, you can be one of those writers who stands at the gate, hat in hand, waiting for some perfect stranger to agree that you have the right to be heard. Or you can head out there and make a living as a writer on your own terms. Like I did. I, P.J., am the author of several successful novels as well as a nonfiction writing guide. I’m also the co-founder of Evil Toad Press, a boutique publishing house representing feminist, queer-positive and other non-traditional voices. We offer a la carte self-publishing services as well as publish a small group of emerging authors under our own imprint. I liked being independent so much, and was so happy with the results, that I decided to help other writers do the same thing—and achieve the same degree of success, which for me means paying my bills from the proceeds of my writing.

There are a lot of books out there, which teach you how to format your e-book, or get the most out of this month’s popular print on demand platform. Or which promise immediate sales, using gimmicky and often dishonest tactics. But this is the only book, which lays out, step by step, how to transform your fantasies of a writer’s life into the real deal. How to actually make a meaningful living, over the long term, from the fruits of your artistic labors. From understanding the nuances of the publishing process to marketing your book—successfully, and for free—to developing a business plan that will actually work for you, rather than against you, this is the advice you need when you’re ready for the next step. When you’re ready, not just to publish a book but to embark on a new career.

Success in this—or any—field takes hard work. And it isn’t automatic. You need a good book, a solid work ethic, and the willpower to translate that solid work ethic into more good books. But if you’re ready to defeat the stereotype, then you’re ready for Self-Publishing Is For Losers.

Risks and challenges

Self-Publishing Is For Losers is already written. We’re appealing to the internet because we need help covering the cost of an ISBN number, interior formatting, and printing our finished product. We may be an independent outfit, but we still have to pay the people who work with us! Our goal of $2,000 will cover the costs of producing the book, as well as the cost of our rewards. The only challenge involved is that we might not get funded. And, if we don’t get funded, we’ll have a difficult time publishing the book any time soon because—guess what!—we have toddlers. And toddlers, like books, are also very expensive.
