About this project
Giving birth to a sick or premature baby can be quite unexpected for any parent; and I am one of those millions of parents who found themselves in the NICU after my baby was born. That's my son at the beginning of the video when he was in the NICU after being born 11 weeks early. We were in the NICU for 6 months after he was born. It's still hard to grasp the reality of that almost 5 years later that we spent the 1st 6 months of his life in the hospital! But if that had not happened, this project would not exist...
My project is to publish my book 'Love & Hope in the NICU'.
It's a hardcover, 6" x 6" inspirational gift book for parents that find themselves taking a journey through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; otherwise known as the NICU.
But this book is different!
Why? Because it gives parents a break from all of the day-to-day, emotional stress of the NICU. It doesn't give them all of the need-to-know medical terms of what their baby has to endure, it's just filled with inspiration and a reminder that although you are in the NICU the most important thing to remember and focus on is your LOVE & HOPE.
It offers parents some kind words by someone who has been there and knows what to say to them. It gives their friends and family a gift option to solve their problem of "what do I buy for someone who is in the NICU?"
It's also a great resource for organizations that support the NICU community in some way. It gives them an inspirational resource to offer to NICU parents, families and friends.
I wanted to create something different, something that didn't exist but something that NICU parents desperately needed.
When I wrote this book, I thought it would be for current NICU parents only. But then the reviews started coming in from former NICU parents like myself the common theme was that it touched their hearts and gave them some peace about what happened although they were no longer in the NICU.
When current NICU parents read the book their reviews were about how they needed to hear exactly what was in the book. It made some of them cry because of the peace they felt within of letting go of some anger and emotions that they were experiencing in the NICU. They also appreciated that they didn't have to read the entire book. They could just open it up to any page and read what they needed to hear that day: and that it was not overwhelming which is what they appreciated when their entire day is already overwhelming.
I didn't set out to write this book for all of that to happen, but I am overjoyed that so many NICU parents and non NICU parents have found it to be a helpful resource for them in their lives. It really has made such a huge impact in people's lives already and it really is just something that happened as a result of my healing process. It was an outlet for all of those things that I needed to hear in order to heal and find closure.
What everyone seems to love about the book is that it is small, less than 50 pages and quick & easy to read and flip through. They can take it with them everywhere they go. My book is not the normal how to cope and what to do manual, instead it's filled with pictures and words that tell a story about the unseen factors of Love & Hope that exist in the NICU. Some of the pictures are personal; they are our actual family pictures taken of our son in the NICU and are included in the book because they tell the story of Love & Hope being present always in the NICU.
Where are we in the project?
I'm happy to say that the book is finished! There is some minor editing that still needs to be done and some photo releases to be signed but for the most part it is ready to be printed. It's time to publish and distribute it. The goal is to sell the book via our website and to distribute it to NICU hospital gift shops across the country so that parents, families and friends do not have far to go to purchase this book.
In the NICU community, small books like this just do not exist for parents in the NICU and that leaves most people clueless as to what to buy or say to parents that are going through this unfortunate time in their lives. This book will help not only parents but it will help family members and friends to understand what a parent needs to hear while in the NICU as well as providing them with a gift option when they are not sure what to buy for parents in the NICU.
Can I read a few pages of the book?
Of course you can and I want you to so that you understand how this book is different. Go to our facebook page to view some of the book pages; and leave me your comments. Here's a quick look at a few pages now if you don't have the time to leave kickstarter and check out the other pages.
What will I use the money for?
The cost associated with self-publishing and printing the book. I have received several quotes from printers in the US that specialize in printing 6"x 6" hardcover books in small print runs. The amount of money pledged will determine the number of books printed in the 1st edition run.
What is my experience for getting this done?
I survived 6 months in the NICU! If I can do that, I can do anything!
But seriously, I made a decision to leave my job and a 15 year career behind that I enjoyed to be with my son everyday in the NICU and I haven't looked back. Because of my personal journey through the NICU and the huge impact it made on my life, I am now focusing on my creativity and passions in life as well as being a stay-at-home mom.
Why should you support my project?
There are so many reasons a parent may find themselves in the NICU, but
whatever the reason is its an emotional journey that is life changing.
Having to leave your baby in the NICU to go home...to go to work...to go
to school...to be with your other children...to keep up with a life
that's moving on without you and your baby is a very difficult thing to
do. But it's a life that millions of parents around the world have to
do everyday while their baby is in the NICU.
My book will give these parents a bit of inspiration and kind words of thought while they navigate through their journey filled with medical terms, surgeries and life and death decisions that must me made in an instant.
