Can a non runner become a runner? Is running for everyone? I set out on a year long journey to discover what makes a runner a runner.

What are all you runners running from? Always looking so accomplished and proud? That’s not what I look like when I run.  Not even close. So what am I missing? What makes a runner so different from a non runner? Are runners really that much happier, well adjusted, successful people or it just one big scam? In reality are all those runners are just faking it and they really hate every minute of running? And what about the big business behind running? The popularity of racing. People pay money to stand in a group and wait for the OK to run with a bunch of strangers when 95% of them don’t have the slightest chance in hell of winning, and sometimes they do while crap is being thrown at them. By choice! What’s up with that? Even more of a big business, the fashion and gear people wear when they run. I thought running was supposed to be an accessible activity anyone can do? Maybe there’s a reason that Greek dude who ran the first marathon dropped dead when he finished, he didn’t have a pair of ultralight running shoes, skin tight moisture wicking clothes and some sort of weirdly colored energy drink.

In this feature length documentary I will try to figure out what the appeal is to running from a non runners perspective. In case you were wondering, that’s me. Can anyone be a “runner” or is it really limited to certain types of people and that's the dirty little secret the running industry doesn't want to tell the rest of us? I have committed to a year of running at least 6 days a week to see if over the course of that time, can I become a convert to running or will I simply remain my non running self? Over the course of that year I will interview runners from all walks of life, amateurs, professionals, the young and old runner, professional athletes, doctors and people who write about running. Through these interviews and my year of running I will try to truly understand what the appeal is of running and what it is I am missing. Is that mythical runner’s high a real thing or is it just a lie runners tell themselves to get out the door at 5 am on a cold rainy winter morning? I have already begun my year of running but the question remains, when it’s all said and done, will I understand what it is you runners are running from?

Hi. My name is Nick Hagen. So that’s my project. A documentary on running, trying to understand what the appeal is of running from a non runners perspective. My plan is for this documentary to be entertaining, light hearted, funny and hopefully enlightening, with as few of shots of me actually running as possible. I plan to fill the documentary with interviews from a wide gamut of runners to get the best insight into running as possible. If that sounds interesting I hope you decide to support this kickstarter.

What do I need money for? Well, I’m a filmmaker by trade, producing a lot of internet content, so I actually already have a lot of the equipment I need to make this film so luckily that helps keep my overall budget fairly small. My expenses will be for travel to interview subjects, some running equipment and apparel tests, minor filming equipment and expendables costs, musical composition fees and digital distribution fees. Any money we raise beyond our initial goal will go toward making the film as great as it can be.

What do you get in return?  For a just a mere 5 bucks you can see the finished film, for a mere 10 bucks you get a digital download copy of the movie to keep forever which is probably the best reward because it’s the movie and I’m assuming that’s what you’re interested in, or you just want to feel better about yourself by watching me try to become a runner. There are other rewards too like a signed copy of the DVD, or if you prefer I won’t sign it. Which I totally get don’t worry. You can even be an executive producer. Anyway, check out the rewards and hopefully you’ll find a good reason to jump on board and become a backer of this project and help me figure out just what it is people are running from…. or maybe they’re not. I don’t know, I haven’t made the movie yet. Alright, I gotta go run. Thanks in advance for the support!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Although film production can come with a myriad of challenges this style of documentary is limited in that way. Waivers and releases will be signed and I'm confident we will have an interesting story to tell by the end of the process!
