Introducing Grapple, a flexible hanging system made with an unexpected ingredient - GRASS. Grapple represents a completely new approach to hanging objects and clothes, one that is innovative in shape and sustainable in design, as well as being flexible, design-conscious and affordable.
TapeGear is a new breed of design company where holistic sustainability is at the forefront of everything we do. Straight from the company’s inception almost four years ago we set ourselves the challenge to design and make products with sustainability built in as standard….that means making products that tread as lightly as possible on the environment - from the materials we use, to the way we manufacture, to how the product is recycled or re-used. From our studios in both Barcelona and London we have already successfully launched a series of eco-sleeves for electronic devices and now we'd like to continue on our mission, raising awareness that there are alternatives to plastic.
Grapple Hooks are a hanging system for coats, hats, bags and anything else you deem fit for them. Inspired by old, industrial crane hooks we cast original hooks from bio-resin but soon realised that hand-casting is just too slow, and natural bio-resin just too expensive. Rejecting the usual petroleum-based polymers we discovered an amazing recipe for moulding natural plastic made from grass clippings and recycled plastic. The material is developed by Biowert, a german company (or bio refinery) processing meadow grass into environmentally friendly plastics, insulation and green electricity. The final result is a beautiful, textured, strong natural plastic with the faintest smell of meadow that's 100% recyclable and renewable.
A simple buckle system made from a length of natural jute webbing, and held together by a small, bio-polymer buckle, completes Grapple. Users can slide on as many hooks as they like, allowing for a flexible hanging system. We aim to produce the hooks in packs of 1, 2 and 4, with a view to soon offering a fully customizable product where customers can choose the number of hooks and length of webbing. The hooks will come in 4 colors - granite, leaf green, pomegranate red and topaz blue.
We've found the perfect way to produce our hooks and we need funding to make our project happen. We really believe in our product and by supporting us you will allow us to fund our first production run. In exchange, you'll be one of the very first to receive Grapple, as well as doing your part in proving that there are alternatives to petroleum-based plastic and unsustainable manufacturing processes. Since the production process uses injection moulding we need to produce a mould to cast the hooks. This is an expensive process that requires an initial investment of £15,000 for the mold + £5000 for the first production run.
Risks and challenges
As with all Kickstarter projects, it's all or nothing, if we reach our £20,000 goal we would be delighted to provide you with what we think is an amazing new product. If not, it's back to the drawing board. We've gone to great lengths to ensure that everything is prepared to make the production process as smooth as possible, from working prototypes to 3D scans, production plans to marketing materials, and even a stand at one of Europe's leading design fairs in Paris. All we need now is your much valued help to make this vision a reality!
