Maelorum is now funded, but we have some neat stretch goals! Go, kickstarters, go!
Well, you got through the homemade movie, so check out why this unique Gamebook Novel is worth backing!
I want to help keep our beloved Gamebook Genre alive, but I cannot do it alone, I need your help. When published, Maelorum will start a new independant series that will add a fresh title that I hope people of all ages will enjoy. I will try to show a new generation that didn't grow up with these books just what they have been missing!
This is a story you can interact with and change. Interactive Novels were most popular in the 80's with many series where the reader could determine the outcome of the story, and they have made a small rebound lately. Maelorum is the name of this nearly completed work, and is the result of over ten years of conception, planning, and countless dedicated, sleepless nights. It is different than any Gamebook that has come before, with a first-person navigation system as pictured above, a unique, rebooted battle system, and focuses on storytelling, full of character development, treasure to be found, monsters to be slain -- and much, much more!
Why this book needs a kickstart: Like many innovators on Kickstarter, I have taken this project as far as I can, with the resources I have. Until now this has been a one man show, but now I need help completing Maelorum. I need your help giving it the polish that it deserves. Most of the writing is done. All but one illustration is complete. What I need is professional editing services and game testing, funds for printing costs and conversion into a digital, interactive version. That's right -- this is going to be available in print and as an ebook. 100% of the funding is going towards the project. You're not just backing a project, but supporting a cherished Genre by adding a new series.
What's in this book?
The book will be printed in an 8.5 x5.5 perfect bound edition (softcover) with a durable laminated cover, and also a Collector's hardcover edition, both will feature full color art and high quality paper. Life after Kickstarter will see the book on Amazon, iBooks, Barnes&Noble, and www.Maelorum.com
Maelorum Volume One is an origins story. There's three main characters, a Knight, a Rogue, and a Wizard, and you choose who you want to be. Each character has their own sub plot and story line, and their own unique endings. SPOILER: everyone might not survive. You can be a good or evil character based on your decisions! There are ten fully illustrated monsters, over 60 illustrations total, ten possible endings, over three hundred pages of original story, a complete rule book, character sheet and item catalog. It's reading, it's role playing, it's awesome.
You can see more art and get more info on the official website: www.Maelorum.com
Use of Kickstarter Funds:
Stretch Goal: 1
- At 8k, I would be able to begin building the fully playable APP, with a full soundtrack! All backers at the 45.00 level and up would automatically receive this once it gets finished, my estimate is this could take as long as 6 months to finish. Backers below 45.00 would get the downloadable soundtrack and artbook, as well as a 10% discount on the APP. Not bad, right?
- At 10k I would improve on the APP, such as introducing brand new content not featured in the book. Monsters, treasure, etc!
Stretch Goal: 2
- At 12k I start the sequel, which is already outlined. I have some very interesting plans in store for any of you that survive Volume One! Don't worry, this will NOT be a trilogy! Volume Two will wrap up the original story line for the surviving characters. The best part? My five largest backers from Volume One will be featured in the book, either as themselves or alter egos. The sequel breaks out of the dungeons beneath Mount Mael, and takes you into the landscape of Maelorum, focusing on Lordell City and the Elderwood Forest.
Inspiration for the book:
Believe it or not, this was actually inspired by The Neverending Story, I did not set out to create a Gamebook at first. What I wanted to create was a story that looped around back to the beginning, and that could change every time it was read. The technical issues of creating something like that were immense, it had never really been done before...but I finally figured out a way to do it!
I wouldn't just write a story, but make an interactive one. A Gamebook, but unlike anything that had been done before. I have tried to be more story focused, less random, and give more realistic choices. I wanted a way to explore the book almost like a video game. Thus I created a first person navigation system, in a style many have said reminds them of ShadowGate, which I take as a very high compliment because that was one of my all time favorite games growing up. Speaking of Shadowgate, they have a new game on kickstarter right now! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zojoi/shadowgate
Still, there were things I wanted to do different than existing Gamebooks, I didn't want my reader to have to learn too many rules, or take away from the reading / escapism experience. I wanted a streamlined book. I created the new monster battle pages as pictured with the Troll above, in hopes that this has been accomplished.
Last but not least, the story had to be compelling. Personal. I created three people with very Human flaws, and each with something different at stake. Each character has their own sub-plot, so even when you finish the book, it can be read all over again through someone else's eyes.
With the random events, and insane amount of choices, and after ten years of development, I believe I have truly created a Never-ending Story.
About the Author: William Fincher
I have worked on Maelorum for over ten years, and this is the last stretch to complete it. Once finished, it will be a massive personal achievement.
There is zero chance I will not fulfill my pledge to complete the project, and reward all my backers. I have an organized and experienced team of friends and family that will help me fulfill the pledges, and making this happen will be my full time job. I can honestly handle as many backers as possible.

Can't get enough Gamebooks? Then check out our friends at Megara Entertainment, and support Arcana Agency: The Thief of Memories on Kickstarter. Fans pledging to both campaigns will get extra rewards from both kickstarters!
Arcana Agency: The Thief of Memories introduces innovative elements to interactive fiction. It is written in the third person, not the second, which is a departure from most gamebooks. Its expansive non-linear plot (549 game paragraphs means a lot of alternatives) allows the player to control three detectives at once. Game mechanics blend seamlessly with the story, and the book's system of codewords – used to great effect in the Fabled Lands series (mentioned with permission) – allows a precise record of how the player affects the world.
Details: Maelorum backers pledging 30.00 and up, who also pledge to Arcana Agency's minimum dual backer tier of 40.00, will unlock new rewards from both Campaigns ( Three custom bookmarks from AA, and a CD fully loaded with art, making of videos, and original concept material from me ) plus you get to support two amazing projects! Your bonus rewards be included and shipped with the rest of your rewards. This promotion only applies if both Kickstarters succeed!
Risks and challenges
Printing: There is always a possibility of some print production delay or unforeseen difficulty, a lot of planning has been done but you cannot plan for everything. This is my first time publishing, but I do have a lot of expert advice from industry veterans. Nonetheless if anything were to happen with the production schedule it would be minor, I can change print production companies if need be, which would be a maximum of 3 months delay before I could ship your book and/or other materials.
Digital: The basic Ebook conversion should be straight forward, and basic funding easily provides for this, but if some technical issue comes up, I can see a month's delay to work through that. For the aspects of the project that would begin with over funding, I cannot place an exact date when those would be completed, but I can speculate it would be 5 to 6 months to have the APP developed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
