ALL THE PRETTY HORSES is an inter-species dance project aimed at inspiring us to share in the beauty and sensitivity of the horse.
Six horses are led over the green landscape in intricate, interlacing patterns, their handlers weaving them through the 24 human performers: a beautiful line of horses here, humans walking in concert there, slow processionals bloom into small groups, duets, solos; a unison dance phrase emerges; humans rest on the ground, the horses and their handlers move through the maze of bodies . . .
ALL THE PRETTY HORSES is an inter-species dance/theater project aimed at inspiring all of us to share in the strength and beauty and grounded sensitivity that is the horse.
The goal of this FREE performance is to help EQUINE ADVOCATES raise funds to rescue a Mustang to join their Mustang stallion, NELSON, and to raise awareness of the tragic plight of the endangered AMERICAN MUSTANG.
ALL THE PRETTY HORSES interweaves area high school students, “throw away” horses rescued from slaughter, professional dancers and the volunteers who care for the horses. These horses are not beautifully trained, they do not necessarily come when called, they are not mounted or running free in a fantasy scenario. These horses have shared their lives with humans, have given everything they have until they are no longer useful, then they have been consigned to the meat industry.
Dolly, Zoe, Maxine, Queen, Jill and Bernadette are the lucky ones. Now they live at a sanctuary in a beautiful part of upstate New York. They speak for their mates who aren’t there. In ALL THE PRETTY HORSES, they will partner with humans in a new and indelible way. The handlers and volunteers at the rescue sanctuary already know them. They come week after week in their time away from work to share life with these horses. The students are volunteers too, this may be their first experience around horses, around rescued horses. We know it won’t be their last.
Fifteen years ago Paula Josa-Jones took back the dreams of her childhood and rode a horse. Tilly was an older horse, a mare with a sense of correctness, an eye for talent and a big heart. Week after week she taught Paula and together they created a passionate bond. In Paula it formed the seeds of this project and many, many other dances with horses.
For the last twelve years Paula Josa-Jones/Performance Works has devoted itself to dancing with horses and opening the minds and hearts of people to the beauty and integrity of their equine companions. Inspired by her passion for and love of the horse, Paula Josa-Jones, with principal dancers Ingrid Schatz, DeAnna Pellechia and her company, have brought the joy of the dance to horses and humans alike.
ALL THE PRETTY HORSES reveals the depth and heart of the human-horse bond, and the beauty and possibility of that which is usually “thrown away.” By sharing time and space with horses; listening to them, communicating with them, learning to ground our bodies in the language of movement that we share with them, we become more compassionate, more fully human, and more a part of the shared earth.
Your donation will help us to pay for rehearsals, technical support, publicity, costumes, equipment and travel. It will also help us to develop middle and high school level educational materials that will be an essential part of our project as it grows.
