Transforming elaborate Mayan textiles into bohemian designs to create a high-quality and unique collection of boots and accessories.
Uxibal is a unique collection of Mayan inspired boots and accessories created with the adventurer in mind. We fuse elaborate handwoven textiles with contemporary designs to bring you fun, bright, and one-of-a-kind pieces. We work directly with the Mayan artisans to produce well-crafted goods by hand ins small artisan workshops—a.k.a. no mass-productions, no factories..For the bohemian city dweller and the free-spirited traveler alike, these pieces will brighten up whatever adventure you're on.
At Uxibal we are proud to practice a sustainable and completely handmade production process down to the threads. Working with a network of indigenous Mayan women we are able to recreate the traditional methods of small-scale textile production that have been employed for centuries. It starts in the women's backyards, a homegrown cotton collective. The cotton is harvested and cleaned, then fused together to produce usable fibers. These fibers are then naturally tinted, using vegetable extracts as dye, and finally spun by hand to prepare the threads for the loom. The women then weave the threads with a backpack style loom to create the textiles that adorn each of our products. Because our entire process is carried out by hand we are able to achieve a uniqueness in each product making no two items exactly the same. Although we may not be able to compete with the cheap and massively produced brands out there, we know that providing fair wages and good labor practices in order to produce high-quality handmade products is worth every penny!
Our model seeks to empower women by providing them with opportunities to learn and work. The majority of the women we work with have received little to no formal education, and often times have never even learned to read. Although they have had limited educational opportunities, these same women are incredibly skilled in the design and creation of unique Mayan textiles. Under the instruction of their mothers and grandmothers before them, our weavers have inherited the rare skill of being able to create vibrant and ornate textiles by hand . They are creating unique pieces of wearable art that we are excited to bring to your closets. We want to provide these women with the opportunity to turn their craft into income and improve their own lives, at the same time as, giving them the opportunity to share their special craft with the rest of the world.
The funds raised from this kickstarter campaign will go towards the following:
- materials & labor costs
- product development
- workshop & tools

Since coming to Guatemala, I became obsessed with the bright and colorful fabrics worn by the Mayan women. For centuries, women here have been wearing elaborate handwoven textiles with such detail that they can take up to several months to fabricate. After being exposed to thousands of these beautiful fabrics, I came up with the idea to mix these vibrant textiles with contemporary designs to create a distinct style of apparel. It started with a pair of boots that I designed and found a talented boot maker to help create the first pair. They were fun, comfortable and adorable! So, I had another pair made, then another and another, until I realized that I only had so much money and closet space to continue. I started making boots for friends and family. I perfected the design by trying new fabrics, modifying little things for comfort and functionality and finally came up with the perfect prototypes. Now, we are ready to release our premier line which showcases boots alongside other accessories with the same Mayan Bohemian theme. With our small collection, we hope to raise enough money to fund our brand and eventually launch a full line of apparel for Spring/Summer 2013. We are all geared up to start production, we just need people like you to make stuff for. Whether it's a bracelet or a pair of our signature boots, we are excited to share these amazing handcrafted designs with you!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
For the last few months at Uxibal we have have been carrying out a small-scale production for local distribution of our boots and accessories. This process has been been useful, allowing us to identify our shortcomings and improve our operation for a larger scale production. We have worked out many kinks relating to sourcing materials, small tweaks in design for enhanced functionality, and establishing an overall consistency in the quality and appearance of our products. Although this process has been a stressful one that has taken us many months to complete, it has been a necessary step in preparing us for this kickstarter campaign.
We are now at a point where we are confident with our process and the products we are creating, however there are still challenges that we are bound to face as we amp up our production. Every aspect of our process is time consuming--from the highly intricate handwoven materials we source, to the completely hand made process of producing our boots. It is possible that if we receive a large amount of orders, our production process may take more time than we originally anticipated. We are communicating with our production team to prepare for a high number of orders; however, until our kickstarter project is finalized we can't be certain of exact numbers, nor make the investments for a high volume of materials, which poses an additional challenge with our suppliers.
Finally, expanding to markets outside of Guatemala brings up an unfamiliar challenge to us of shipping. Up until now, our distribution chain has been passing on our products to the customer with our own hands. Our team is currently planning out the best ways to approach getting our products outside of Guatemala and to our customers in the US and around the world in a timely and efficient manner. We are confident that we will be able to come up with a good system, however there are always potential setbacks with shipping; whether it's issues with customs or any other unforeseen events. For this reason, we have overestimated shipping times to prepare our customers beforehand for the complications that may effect our distribution.
Yes! To pledge for more than 1 item, add up the prices of each product you wish to purchase, then manually enter the amount into the pledge box. Once the project is successfully funded, you will be sent a message to clarify which items it is that you want.
If you are an international backer and wish to pledge for multiple items, you will only need to pay the shipping fee of the highest priced item in your order. For example, if you purchase the Raya Short Boot and the Tribal headband, you only need to pay $25 for shipping (not $32). Or let's say you buy the Short Boot, the headband, and the bracelet, it's still just $25 for shipping.
