When we first embarked on this journey, we didn't even know KickStarter existed. We were simply determined to create a simple, fun game and one day, hopefully, do it as our jobs.
We've been toiling away for over a year to bring you our first project; "Creatures and Catacombs: Fulgrim's Quest". Its been tough doing so much with so little, and that's why we have turned toward Kickstarter to help put the game 'over the top'. At this point, our development hardware (which was not top-of-the-line to begin with) is aging and we really need more art and music resources. One obvious need is a better rendering 'rig' for art creation. Music is another problem because no one on our current team has musical talent so these assets will have to be either bought or licensed. Walter, our artist, has been furiously pounding out great visual resources but one person can only do so much. We could really use your help!
No matter what, we've come too far to turn back now. The question is merely "when"? Without Kickstarter, it will take much longer to finish.
Our goal of 15,000$ is really the bare minimum. It provides for some new hardware, software licenses, and a small budget for music composition or licensing. Below are some things we would really like to get into the final product, but these would significantly delay the final product without your help.
20,000$: Alternate Character Art
Who says that guys should have all the fun? Chose Gunnvarr's unique art set for the quest ahead! We already have the basis for a female warrior so it just needs finishing up. We'd like to get this into the final game so this is our first stretch goal.
27,000$: Level 1 Redux
You might have noticed the demo level has a definite 'assembled from tiles' look to it, which is correct! Engineering built this level while Art was busy creating exciting characters. While this look is certainly 'functional', we feel it could look way better, and more natural, 'rendered out'. Our future levels are set to do just that; here is the mountain temple level background and an early peek at the temple itself:
We'd love to give the same polished look to level 1 for the full release!
35,000$ : Mount Up!
We think great heroes like Fulgrim and Gunnvarr really deserve ferocious and unique mounts to get around some levels. Here's a test video of the animation rig in action, but as you can see it is not finished:
However, there is more to it then art. We have to modify the combat mechanics and AI to deal with a mounted combatant. Also, testing and code has to be done for collision detection, and small issues like mounting/dismounting.
60,000$ : Bring a Friend!
Fulgrim's Quest was designed with a second player in mind, thus, the interface and many game mechanics are 'stubbed' with code for a second player. Still, incorporating a second player has many design challenges, play-balance issues, and general bugs. It would increase the production schedule to be sure, but the result, we feel, would be well worth it. The funds raised at this level would also allow for a larger test team which is necessary for a multi-player title. Player 2 will be represented as Gunnvarr from the 20,000$ stretch goal.
250,000$ : Valhalla
Hey, it's free to dream, right? At this point Late Nite Games would become our full time careers and we would be 'beyond ecstatic'. Probably a bit much to wish for, but miracles have happened here on Kickstarter!

This gigantic creature is sure to test Fulgrim's mettle. Here is a prototype of what we have in mind:
The Wraith, a denizen of the Shadow Realm, demonstrates its teleport attack in our 'danger room' test area. This enemy is nearly complete and will be in the full version.
Do we really need to go into detail about this guy's power? Look at that mug! General Koldan's Field Marshal will test Fulgrim beyond mortal comprehension. You've been warned.

Walter Carter III
Walter has been active in the gaming industry for over 15 years in graphics and quality assurance testing. He has worked as a modeller and animator for Microprose (1991-1995), OT Sports (1995-1997), Digital Addiction (Co-Founder, 1998-2000), and Kesmai (1999-2001).
Walter is also an Adjunct 3D Modeling / Animation Instructor at both the University of Baltimore and the Community College of Baltimore County, Maryland.
A former employee of Microprose Software, Mike Barker has worked on several landmark titles including Civilization 2, Master of Orion 2, and Colonization. After MPS' untimely demise, he worked on other milestone titles like Unreal and Mechwarrior Mercenaries 3DFx. He is one of the two 'founding fathers' of AXIOM (a C# port of the OGRE 3D engine).
Risks and challenges
The 'hard part' of creating this product is already done; which is the engine that renders, handles AI, input, sound, and much more. At this point, we are simply creating interesting levels, creatures, and AI. Thus, the biggest risk we see is one of the members departing (perhaps to the afterlife, which almost occurred in October). Other possible risks include 3rd parties failing to deliver ordered goods (such as T-shirts or mugs). However with over 2000 hours of labor invested, we are committed to delivering at this point.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
