About

A great Kickstart last year gave us the funds (thanks a lot) to take our design over to China and get final production sample tents made. We've listened carefully to the feedback from the crowd and the new model is 3 times lighter, 4 times more compact and 5 times cheaper than our first Nano. We've made 54 other refinements and it has just sailed through some very harsh mountain testing.

That all sounds very nice but why would I want one?

Because the Nano 2 will change the way you camp. Its the only tent in the world that you can fully open or close in a second and once you've experienced the temperature control and all-round versatility that comes with that, you really wont want to go back to one of those limited stuffy things. See all the main selling points outlined here or scroll down for the detail.

Its an open and shut case
Its an open and shut case

Think of a baby in a pram. If it starts raining the parent protects it by bringing the hood over. If it gets too hot in there, they give it some fresh air. It's not rocket science - just that no-one's ever put this functionality into a tent before.

                             It's strong

  • When closed, it forms a perfect hemisphere presenting no face to the wind so the air flows easily around it rather than pushing up against it.

  • The radial frame design makes a strong exoskeleton - like having a protective rib cage around you.
  • No other tent has an arc of aluminium tubing going round the entire base perimeter that can be directly pegged down. The rigidity of the tube distributes the wind load amongst all the fixings - no point loading on one peg - giving limpet-like adhesion.
  • In harsh environments there are plenty of times when you can't physically get pegs to penetrate. In rocky terrain the Nano can be pitched entirely without pegs by weighting down the perimeter frame arc with stones whilst in high winds the storm guys provide additional lateral stability - they can be fixed to the frame at a variety of points depending on the wind direction.

                             It's versatile

  • Most tents are designed to be used in one way. The Nano 2 is different. You can set it up as open, closed or anywhere in between depending on the purpose or the conditions - giving tremendous versatility. Click below to see the 6 main settings full screen.
  • Like mountains or expeditions? With the Nano you can bring the hood over and enjoy that full panoramic view from inside your tent.

  • At a summer festival? Now you can sunbathe and hang out without leaving your space. In the morning when the sun hits the tent and that hateful greenhouse effect starts to cook you in there, don't end up like this, just open up and drink in the fresh air.
  • Picnic at the beach or lake? Use it as a windbreak or a sunshade then just shut it for a minute when you need a changing room.
  • Here the canopy is brought 2/3 over and guyed in pace. When its like this we call it the 'Clamshell' - great for hunting, fishing or any activity where you want to take in the outside world but still be protected from the elements. (Its easy to unpeg and fold in the outside half of the groundsheet to stop it getting dirty or wet).

                             It's spacious

  • Unrestricted interior space, over 9 square metres of floor area and walls that rise almost vertically make it roomy and allow maximal use of the available footprint.

  • Sleeps 3 in comfort and 4 (or more) if you're good friends

It's quick and easy to set up

  •  1 person - 15 minutes, 2 can do it in 12. All backers given a link to the step by step online set up video. Watch me do it in 48 secs...

                Integrated solar light string

  • 50 cool white LEDs hung from underside of peak arc and external micro panel with mount. Its obviously not a floodlight but on a days charge it will give good ambient light all night and enable you to find that torch. IP68 rated (can submerge) and unaffected by opening/closing. (Light unit ships separately).
(Note that the light in this image is not coming from the light string itself)

Lockable back door with fly screen

  • Lightweight combination lock (no key to lose) secures the tent from an opportunist thief when you are not around. Door is double zipped so can be locked from the inside as well. Fly screen independently zipped.

                           Packs up small

  • At 8.84 Kgs this is not a tent for the single ultra-lightweight backpacker who's filing down his toothbrush to save a couple of grams but if 3 or 4 trekkers are sharing the load it is pretty competitive (at 2.94 and 2.21 Kgs per person) with the better quality lower weight stuff out there - and none of those tents have any of the Nano's versatility.

We also make a big version! If you back us you can be safe in the knowledge that you are dealing with the world authority on true pram hood tents - quite easy really, as we are the only people in the world making them!

Lots of experience of this...
Lots of experience of this...

Plenty of info on the development of the Mollusc design in general on our last Kickstarter campaign  and on our site. We've been shuttling prototype Nano's between Wales and China all year, ironing out the glitches and refining the tent. This is just a flavour of some of the evolution....

                                Rewards

We've kept the rewards simple. We'll ship the tents worldwide by airmail courier but if you live outside USA, UK, Europe, Australia or Canada let us know and we will get an individual delivery price for you. Shipping to all of those main destination is ~$30 (that is about 1/3 of the  actual cost, we are covering the rest within the tent price). Local customs duties and taxes can change but these are our shippers current maximum estimates for those 5 main regions. USA - Nil. UK - $45. EU - $40. Canada - $45. Australia - Nil. (Based on a backer ordering one tent only. By all means order more than one but appreciate that it could take you into a different tax/duty bracket).

1. Random Act of Kindness. You are kind and help us for no return. (Though we will offer you the chance to stay updated on the project via our Facebook group).

2. Get a Mollusc T shirt like this one. £25, ships anywhere by airmail courier for free.

3. Early Bird Gets the Snail. First 20 backers can get one Nano 2 for £349 (~$435) plus shipping - a 33% saving on the retail cost.

4. Join the Snail Revolution (Get one Nano 2). You pay £394 (~$491) plus shipping - a 25% saving on the retail cost.

Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom. Got any questions? - just ask. We need 200 orders to initiate our first production run and big stuff like this often doesn't work that well on Kickstarter so whether you want one yourself or not, please share if you can. Click on any social step below to help birth a baby snail tent that might just change camping for ever.

Appreciated,

Ru and the team at The Nautilus (Mollusc HQ in Wales)

Risks and challenges

This is our second Mollusc Campaign on Kickstarter and we learned on the first that the crowd will tell you where you are right and wrong. Basically, crowd intelligence might be harsh but it doesn't lie. We have incorporated our learning from the first time into the Nano 2, spent the last year in an intense dialogue with our Chinese manufacturing partners, taken advantage of their enormous tent-making expertise and between us, we've ironed out all the problems. Over that time 10 distinct sample tents have been made and tested under different conditions and the final version featured here is a product of that tortuous development process.

Production. These tents have been made as sample production models by the manufacturer. We have a pre-arranged production window with them that is timed to coincide with the end of this campaign and we are aiming at a low minimum initial production run of 200 units. This established company regularly produce tents by the five thousand so if we reach the target, our low volume order is not going to challenge their production capacity (or their technical capabilities) in the slightest.

Shipping. We have commissioned experienced international fulfilment specialists to handle global distribution so do not anticipate big problems in this department.

The best laid plans can and do go wrong but after 5 years on this project we think we have considered and allowed for every conceivable contingency. If something comes up that we haven't prepared for (always a possibility), we will inform all backers immediately and honestly and do our level best to resolve the issue satisfactorily.
