Imagine spending a weekend with hundreds of other low-carbers in a coastal New England town turned keto! Within four blocks, you will interact with world-class speakers, patronize local restaurants serving real keto dishes, attend a pig roast where you don't have to worry about sugar in the sauce, learn how to cook your own keto dishes, attend talks on various keto-related topics, take fat-adapted fitness classes, and network with other ketogenic warriors.
Ketofest is not a conference, but a festival! Conferences are for professionals. Festivals are for people! Ketofest is for real people who want to learn the science behind - and practical applications of - the ketogenic diet as a remedy for multiple "diseases of civilization."
Ketofest is a celebration of life for those who value the continuous benefits of nutritional ketosis. Your hosts are Carl Franklin and Richard Morris from the 2 Keto Dudes podcast.
Talks by authors, journalists, and scientists including but not limited to Jimmy Moore, Ivor Cummins, Dr. Jeffry Gerber, Dr. Eric Westman, and Megan Ramos. If we can afford to bring more experts in, we will!
On Social Saturday (July 15), we're having an outdoor party on the Parade Plaza in New London, which is right on the water, across the street from the train station. Not only will we have a pig smoking on a spit, we'll also be serving smoked pork shoulder and 48-hour chuck roast cooked sous vide style. You get the flavor and fat of chuck roast, but as tender as filet mignon! The Mystic Meat Locker will be offering samples of and taking orders for their amazing cured and smoked meats (charcuterie), which they make with no sugar and more fat! Of course, we'll have plenty of water and coffee available, but no alcohol will be served at our party. There are plenty of drinking establishments within walking distance that have been schooled in keto cocktails! Thames River Winery will be hosting wine tastings all day long in their cellar right across the street from the Parade Plaza. Now, that's a party!
There will be opportunities to go on walking tours, Segway tours, running tours, and cycle tours. We're working with a local used bike shop to offer up bikes for the day. We'll be doing fitness lessons during the day as well. The Spark Maker Space has a professional kitchen where you can watch instructional keto cooking lessons and sample the results. There may be additional costs and space limitations on lessons and tours, but we will ensure that it won't break the bank.
We are working with most of the restaurants within walking distance to provide at least one ketogenic dish on their menu. These dishes will be highlighted in the printed program along with a map of the restaurants, phone numbers, and whether they require reservations. Most do not. We know of at least one restaurant that will offer brick-oven Fat Head Pizza! Included in the price of admission are $20 worth of food tickets for these restaurants.
The festival starts at 8 AM and goes until 5 PM, at which time you can find your way to one of the restaurants for dinner. Food will be served at noon. At 7 PM the doors of the Garde Theater will open for a short keynote from Carl Franklin and Richard Morris, followed by screenings of important documentaries and movies related to the ketogenic diet and its health benefits. Movie night ends at midnight.
The talks start at 8 AM and go until 5 PM. This is where you'll get to hear the latest research, science, and stories from the field. We hope to do breakout sessions on particular topics as well. The talks will be decided and posted after we have met our goal.
Bacon, cheese, nuts, and liquid refreshments will be available all day, but there will be no formal lunch (there just isn't room).
Midday, Carl and Richard will record a live 2 Keto Dudes episode as a panel discussion with noted guests.
The Mystic Meat Locker will be fulfilling orders at the Garde. Stop by and pick up your vacuum-sealed charcuterie before you leave.
On Friday, July 14, at 6 PM there will be a VIP dinner party at Carl Franklin's house where you'll get face time with our speakers in a small setting (60 person limit).
Also, there is a possibility that we will offer an all-day workshop on Friday, July 14th. If you're interested in this at all, please don't make travel plans until AFTER the Kickstarter completes. We have no more information to offer at this time.
An event like this is unprecedented. Many people are involved. We simply didn't want to take the financial risk. Kickstarter is a great platform for making sure our event will happen. You won't be charged unless we meet our goal. Everybody wins.
Risks and challenges
We realize that bringing so many people into our little town increases the necessity for lodging and transportation. We did the math and estimated that we should cap it at about 1000 attendees so as to not put a burden on the hotels, motels, and other places to stay.
As for transportation, we have the option of hiring a bus company to provide transportation to and from several major hotels in the area. They have saved the date!
There are risks that a speaker may have to cancel and be replaced. There's nothing we can do about that except to find the best speakers we can to fill their shoes. Fortunately, we are in good standing with the community, and we don't anticipate a problem filling the demand.
One thing we have noticed is that some people have already booked plane tickets and made hotel reservations. That's not a good idea, as we won't know for sure that we're having Ketofest until after this campaign. Not only that, but there may be Friday or Monday events if demand warrants. So, sit tight and wait until we are funded.
In short, we are confident that we can handle any contingency that comes up so long as we're funded!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
