I have spent the past two years putting in a native plant garden and am about to install a vegetable garden (using wholly pockets) at a public school in south Philadelphia. This has made a tremendous impact on the students, faculty and people living around the school. First, it demonstrated that even an empty lot can be transformed into a beautiful space, one that can be a resting and feeding spot for birds and other animals (something that is missing in urban environments). Second, we showed that even without any green space, you can grow vegetables and herbs using vertical gardening. This project has been extremely rewarding and now I want to expand the idea.
I want to take an abandoned lot that used to be the location of a crumbled building and use a side concrete wall to create a garden in my neighborhood. I wil use it as a teaching space to run free classes on urban gardening. I will also put up signs explaining the project and why it is important. I need help to raise the money for the wholly planters that I will be using. Part of my project will be coming up with a list of grants that individuals can apply for to do a similar garden at thier home, park or schoolyard.
